Yep.

He just can't help himself. I'm sure the next time David Haugh is on the show LIL DANNY BERNSTINE will light him up and take him to task on his views concerning youth and football. And by "take him to ask" and "light him up" I mean he will pretend the column never happened, pretend to be best friends and be a huge fucking coward.

BernSTINE excels at being a coward.

That was a really good article and he made Haugh look like a hayseed dope.

He needs to read his writing out loud. It is a mess of polysyllabic words that make sense together but have no rhythm or feel. It's like a precocious eighth grader with a too-fond appreciation for the Microsoft Word thesaurus function wrote it, notwithstanding that, yes, he is much much sharper than David Haugh.

Those phrases should never slip through a second draft. You can get away with that ugliness when you are speaking off the cuff, as he does on the radio, but you'd never try it in a speech, and it is even worse on the written page.

Also, quite apart from Bernstein, where in the Important Sports Thinkers handbook is the one sentence paragraph rule written? If that's what J-schools teach, blow up the J-schools.

While I'm talking to myself: how long has that "article" featuring the picture of Kate Upton been on the CBS website? At least a month, right? They have porn on the internet now, we don't need BOOBIES! stories from our pseudo-newspapers.

The only one that stuck out to me was "doubles down on the canard," which isn't a mixed metaphor, but still kind of clunky. The rest of it was fine, but maybe I've just grown accustomed to how he writes.

Plaschke and Telander end almost all their columns with the 1SP and it annoys the shit out of me. E-mail Dan and tell him that he's aping Rick goddamn Telander and for that there will be hostile robots sent to his (that is, Dan's) house. That'll learn 'im.

If Bernsie had any morals or whats the word... real honest feelings about this then he would quit his job. How can you beat the thing down that pays your bills and not be dirty. He is as hypocritical as Penn St. fans. Go home play hockey with your boy in the basement and let the wife's wedding planning hobby support you. Oh and I can't wait until his son wants to play real hockey and hit, board and slash. Uh-huh he is gonna tell him no son you cant. You must be a saber metrics programmer.

How about a new list of of people who who won't/better not be on the B&B show? Hawk ditched the flagship in giving his mea culpa, Haugh should now join Telander, and that's just this week's additions. We know the list doesn't exclude fellow SCR hosts, and should some day include just about any and everyone they come across, just a matter of time.

Probably be left with the non-sports intellectuals and a few writers who like to talk sports.

Good point. From a strictly business point of view I think B&B's days are numbered.

I thought the article sucked because fisking David Haugh isn't really a thesis and because I generally don't like Dan as a writer. That said, everything in it is true and Haugh's a slack-jawed dullard.

I made this point months ago, and Im sure it was made before me... Still %100 true... Drive time sports talk can't pull any quality guests should be a major red flag.

Only insofar as Terry wants to keep working. Mitch isn't going to mess with what's quite oddly his featured show. Bud Light Who Needs Two Tavern Tour!

Dan is actually right. I wouldn't let my kids play football. What is strange here is that he is so concerned about the brains of young football players but he is letting his kid play hockey. Hockey, while probably not as bad as football, is a close second in terms of head injuries even if you don't include fighting. I just don't see how you can justify the "Football will melt your brain and you are an idiot to let your kid play it unless you are poor" card and then let your kid play hockey. What do you think happens when you get checked against the boards or a high stick hits your helmet or you get tripped and fall down? It's the same brain that can't handle football there.

I know what the response is. "He's only a little kid and those leagues aren't very physical" but where do you think older hockey players get started? At 14, is he going to sit him down and say "I know you like hockey, but we aren't poor so I won't allow you to play". Of course not.

Before Bernstein starts judging others for putting brains at risk he needs to ask himself why he's allowing his son to play hockey. We all saw the Marian Hossa hit. We all know about Sidney Crosby. It may be safer than football, but it's not safe. Get your kid into golf and table tennis and let the poor people do what your son was born to avoid by birthright.

Interesting that some of the people who are the quickest to judge other parents and their actions in general are the same ones who want their kid to play a sport that almost guarentees brain damage.

I sincerely doubt Bernstein is going to let his kid play hockey. Maybe floor hockey.

He's not going to say that--not a lot of poor people playing organized hockey in Chicagoland--but he has said that he's going to take his kid of out of hockey once it gets serious. I mean, he's seven; he's in a mess-around-with-a-puck-and-fall-on-your-ass league, if anything.

Why get your kid involved in hockey at all though? He's going to have a tough conversation when he tells his son that he is too entitled to play hockey, football, boxing or go into the military. Why even make it a possibility that he'll be playing hockey at an age where his brain will be destroyed by it?

Listen, he can raise his kids how he wants and I'm not going to judge but clearly he's making the wrong decision in letting his kid play hockey.

Really? I think he's channeling Beardown, if anything.

"Too entitled to play hockey." I really do not think there is such a thing.

Correct. I was mocking the general tone of Bernstein that starts with saying you can make your own decision as a parent but then makes a clear case that your decision is wrong.

Sports that can destroy your brain are only for poor kids.

Hockey is too cost-prohibitive for poor kids, to the detriment of the sport's development. (John Madden grew up in Toronto's housing projects, but I have this sneaking suspicion that Toronto's housing projects aren't quite like ours.) Why am I telling you this? You know this. How needlessly remedial. What's our endgame here? For you to say that then neither rich nor poor kids will play hockey, so hockey is dead, points and laughs?

I don't think hockey or football are going away. I'm saying that someone who let's their kid play hockey shouldn't judge someone who let's their kid play football. Both can really mess up your head.

Then there is no hypocrisy. Just a tough conversation.
