Basically,he's a fucking idiot:
SAN FRANCISCO — Starlin Castro may find himself on the bench soon if his lack of focus continues, or at least that's the latest threat from his manager.

Castro's second mental gaffe in the four-game sweep by the Giants occurred during the fifth inning of the Cubs' 3-2 loss Monday when the 22-year-old shortstop forgot how many outs there were after taking a throw at second from Darwin Barney.

"It's the last straw," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "He better start getting his head in the game, period."

Castro began running off the field after the second out, neglecting to throw to first to try to double up Brandon Crawford, as the tying run scored from third.

There was little chance Castro could've thrown out Crawford, but the gaffe was too extreme for Sveum to overlook.

"It's very embarrassing," Castro said. "This can't happen. I apologize to my team and everybody because that kind of thing is not supposed to happen."

Sveum said he gave Castro "a good talking to," but did not consider pulling him from the game after the inning.

"It's something obviously that's unacceptable at any time," Sveum said. "Whether we could've turned the double play or not is irrelevant to not knowing how many outs there are in the most important part of the game.

"It's not acceptable. These things have got to stop happening, or we're just going to stop playing him. These kind of things are things my son does in high school, maybe."

Carlos Marmol walked two in the seventh inning and gave up a run on a double-play grounder, sending the Cubs to their 11th straight road loss, the team's longest such streak since June 18-29, 1954.

Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong handed the Cubs a two-run lead in the second, giving up five singles, but pitched seven strong innings for the win.

Castro's focus has been a subject of debate since he had his back turned to the infield during a pitch last summer in a nationally televised game against the Mets at Wrigley Field, drawing criticism from then-ESPN analyst Bobby Valentine.

On Friday, Castro stopped running while going into second base on a steal attempt, believing there had been contact and the play was stopped on a foul ball. Sveum was upset at that gaffe but was even more angry Monday.

Castro said Sveum spoke to him after Monday's gaffe, adding: "I would've talked to him anyways."

Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija appeared miffed after the play but said he was upset with himself for lasting only five innings and issuing five walks.

"He didn't say anything," Castro said of Samardzija. "I said: 'My bad.'"

It's been a rough week for the Cubs' young star. Cubs President Theo Epstein had to deny trade speculation regarding Castro on Thursday, before Castro made the baserunning gaffe Sveum referred to as a "brain fart" Friday.

Castro's defense has been improving over the last month, but his lack of focus is hurting his reputation.

"I've been playing pretty well, but it's one of those things where I have to pay attention a little bit more," he said.

He's 23 years old and on a team that will lose between 90-100 games. Yes-he needs to have his head in the game more, but trading him would only make sense if they got a very good player in return. At 22 he led the league in hits and is likely to get stronger and hit for power more as the next few years go by. I don't see him being moved.

I'd force him to play all 162.

Agreed, there is no way this stuff should be happening with the consistency it has.

Ton of talent, not very bright on or off the field, for the right deal trade him..but also fine keeping him...he can't play s.s. though..he is a butcher and has shown very little improvement.

No, it is growing pains. He is young. Unlike most prospects that need development of their physical tools, he needs development of his mental tool. When it matters, it'll be worth sticking with him.

Young is being 13 and making some of the mistakes he mistakes he makes. He is in the Major leagues, they shouldn't have to teach any player how to pay attention for 9 innings of a baseball game. He is very lazy, but also very talented.

Slumps and errors or maybe throwing to the wrong base on a relay play are growing pains. Forgetting how many outs there are or not paying attention to the plate as a pitch is being throw is stupidity. I know Castro is your guy, but even you must see why this is so concerning.

He played Dominican ball as a youngster, which I imagine probably doesn't stress fundamentals, and he skipped a full level of the minors.

Starlin Castro can and will learn to keep his head in the game. That is much easier than finding another player who is just as talented as Starlin Castro.

I mean, c'mon guys...he projects as a slightly less good Derek Jeter. Derek fucking Jeter. You don't just trade those away.

Please don't compare him to Derek Jeter yet, Jeter never has made the mistakes this kid has already made. As I stated earlier, he is extremely talented, but don't put your head in the sand to the mistakes he is making. There is no excusing it.

Castro has the tools to be worlds better than Jeter in the field. I don't see Castro being anywhere near the hitter or leader Jeter has been.

Really?

I feel the exact opposite. He's a singles/doubles machine already (which is what Jeter was)

Do the Cubs have a latin role model on staff yet for Castro and the other young latin players? Going from the Dominican to the US is not an easy transition. These kids need someone they can trust and relate to and someone they look up to. I'm pretty sure none of the latin players know who the fuck Swaimer is or ever watched him play. Get a respected and retired Dominican on staff already if they don't have one yet. It will help these kids develop on and off the field light years faster than having the likes of swaimer or quade bark at them.

At least he has a good work ethic and tries to get better every day. It needs to be a coach though and not a mentor/teammate.

I agree with Brain. Some guys play checkers, some guys play chess. Castro is not real swift.
He is more physically talented than Jeter, especially in the field. Jeter was never a great fielding shortstop. Castro can flat out hit. I only wish he were a little more selective at the plate.

He is only 22. And yes, I would trade him given the right deal.

The Cubs HAD a Latin Role Model: Ivan DeJesus who was a OK SS for the Cubs. If the student doesn't listen, what can the teacher do? Dump his ignorant, stupid ass. I said when he first joined the Cubs that he should be moved to either 2nd or LF. He might be better off in the AL where he can be a DH.

Bottom Line: He's baseball stupid.

You're baseball stupid if you want to put a singles hitter as your DH.
