Still nice that she did. But I think the story is being blown out of proportion.
True. But she could have just run past the hurting girl and not come in last. And it's not just that she helped her, it's that she conciously thought, in the spur of the moment, to make sure the girl she helped finished ahead of her.
That deserves a shoutout.
I'm not saying it wasn't nice and good sportsmanship.
I just think that, in general terms, the heat of competition was no longer there, so it made it an easy choice. Had they actually been competing for a medal at that point in the race, I think things would have been much different. It's the people who actually give up something to do things for other people when they are in need that makes a national story. Not this, which was nice, but not that incredible.
