I read they were going to start him the 5th game before the all-star break and the 5th game after the all-star break. That would give him 13 days rest between starts. Outside that I agree with limiting his pitch counts. He did throw 136 innings just 2 years ago between college, minors and the majors so he's not in uncharted waters like many believe.

There is one thing they might consider and it was done last year under Ozzie....go to 6 starters. Leave Quintana in the rotation when Danks returns and go with 6. That way Sale doesn't have the innings piling up as quickly and Peavy (who actually leads the team in innings this season despite spending over a month on the DL each of the past 5 seasons) would get more time to recover as well. The 6 man rotation is not a good idea for many teams because it means fewer starts for the teams top starters in a rotation. But in this case, it would make sense, as it would be a benefit to those top 2 starters. Plus, Quintana has done a nice job so it's not like they would be inserting a weak starter into the rotation. If they don't do this, they might well leave Quintana in the rotation anyway and remove someone else from it. Just something to consider.

WRONG....he will be at 160 innings pitched by mid August at the rate he's going. He would be at around 225 for the season. Having the wisdom to shut him down when he gets to 150-160 innings ......well, we will see if they have it. If they are too caught up in trying to win the division and having him compete further in the post-season (shouldd they qualify) they would be taking a big risk on an exttremely valuable commodity.

Who says limiting innings makes any difference? Relievers get injured, no? Lack of arm strength will lead to injury no matter the pitcher. They need to throw in order to be able to pitch.
Regardless, some will be injury prone, no matter the number of innings of the context of the pitches thrown. That has not changed since the game began. However, one can strengthen the arm just by throwing.

He only pitched 68 his first year. I doubt they were targeting him for unlimited (200+) the next year
