Report: "Hostile" Meeting Between Randy Orton & WWE Officials

by Justin LaBar June 04, 2012

SuperLuchas.net is reporting Randy Orton met with top WWE officials at the company headquarters on Friday regarding his recent suspension.

The meeting reportedly featured Vince McMahon, Triple H and Kevin Dunn.

The report says it was a "hostile" meeting and a further decision of Orton's future is yet to be determined. Several WWE officials are lobbying for Orton to be released because the lucrative contract with WWE, which has him signed until 2019, can't be justified. The feeling is if he is to return to the WWE roster he will likely be in the mid-card yet WWE will still be paying him his high dollar contract.

If Orton gets suspended one more time he gets fired, the belief is this is going to prevent WWE from wanting to put a lot of investment into him in big main event programs.

Vince McMahon is reportedly especially infuriated with Orton over the suspension. The feeling was he had matured over the years and this recent suspension was a big disappointment to those top company officials.

Reportedly, Orton tested positive for the anabolic steroid Dianabol, which is banned by the United States Congress under its Controlled Substances Act. He also reportedly tested positive for marijuana, which is subject to a $2,500 fine.

Major change to WWE Smackdown brand, but may be temporary

C.M. Punk is being moved at least for the time being from the Raw house show tour to the Smackdown tour.

With Randy Orton, considered by management as the top star on the Smackdown brand being suspended, the company has felt the Smackdown brand needed to be bolstered.

With this week's tour of Spain already heavily advertised with Punk on the shows, the Smackdown crew will be what is had been of late for this week's shows in Salisbury, MD and Binghamton, NY. Next weekend's shows, as the weekend before the PPV, are combined brand shows.

The changes go into effect on 6/23 for the Smackdown show in Springfield, IL, where Punk, Daniel Bryan, Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio will be used as the Smackdown brand headliners. John Cena and Big Show will be used as the Raw headliners. John Laurinaitis will be the third headliner on some, but not all, Raw house shows. Dolph Ziggler is at this point being advertised as the No. 3 star behind Cena and Show on the Raw tour.

At this point it appears the change is temporary, just to get through the next 60 days, since Punk is not being advertised for the Smackdown television tapings, where Cena and HHH are being pushed as the main stars in the local markets. The plans have been for Cena to only work dark matches and HHH to just do cameos at least for now.

Another notable point is that Rey Mysterio, who would have been considered by position as the No. 2 babyface on the Smackdown brand behind Sheamus, is not being advertised for any house shows in July at this point. Mysterio's 60 day suspension will be up in three weeks and he had told management he was ready to return due to knee surgery.

These changes bring up the question about the two championships. The rule of thumb was always to have one champion on each touring brand. However, all five men who are in the two title matches at No Way Out, Punk, Bryan, Kane, Del Rio and Sheamus, are all scheduled to be on the Smackdown tour this summer.

For the first time in years, when it comes to star power, the lesser drawing Smackdown brand seems to be the more loaded touring crew, with Raw relying almost totally on Cena when it comes to babyface star power.

Mark Madden Says WWE Wants To Get Rid of Randy Orton
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 06.08.2012

Permanently…

- Former WCW announcer Mark Madden said on Twitter that WWE is trying to get rid of Randy Orton. Madden posted:

WWE wants to get rid of Orton PERMANENTLY. Character and popularity have plateaued, and he's a pain to deal with.

When asked by a follower whether Vince McMahon has "stopped liking money," Madden said:

Vince thinks everybody is a WWE creation, and therefore disposable, to be replaced by another WWE creation. And you're overrating Orton.

As previously reported, there is said to be a small but vocal group in WWE trying to get Randy Orton fired and while Vince is considering the idea, most believe they will keep him due to roster depth issues. For the first time, employees are openly talking about CM Punk as the second-ranked babyface as opposed to Punk and Orton being on the same level.

Can't say I don't agree with him. Randy Orton seems to be more trouble than he's worth now a days.

YES! YES! YES!

--WWE has purchased the old Mid South Wrestling tape collection from the family of Ene Watts, who acquired the collection as part of her divorce settlement from Cowboy Bill Watts. There had been negotiations going on for years. I'm guessing the timing has to do with the WWE network starting and wanting programming that hasn't been seen on the air in 25 years. Whatever money they would have gotten from DVD sales would have already been just about finished by this point.

--This is not confirmed, but the story going around regarding R-Truth not being on the European tour is that he has a broken foot.

--Regarding Alberto Del Rio, we haven't been able to confirm whether he will be at the Smackdown house shows tonight. If he's not, that would seem to confirm reports of a concussion suffered on Tuesday night but those we've asked haven't heard anything about it.

--Redneck Island, a reality show starring Steve Austin, debuts on CMT tonight at 10 p.m. with a two hour season opener. It's the show we've written about a few times about rednecks being placed in a tropical paradise with weekly challenges and eliminations, with a $100,000 prize going to the winner.

--There was a lawsuit filed that named Dwayne Johnson, although he was not being sued, that has gotten a lot of press in South Florida. Mirta Costa and her family filed a $1.8 million lawsuit against Dany Garcia Johnson, Dwayne's ex-wife and current business manager. It's a sad story as the Costa family got a large sum of money from the Cuban government in a settlement from the wrongful death of their son in 1996. It was retirement money for the family. A member of the Costas worked with Garcia Johnson at her investment firm and because of the trust, had her invest more than $1.8 million in what they wanted to be low-risk retirement investments, with timetables of when the money would be repaid. Several of the firms their money was invested in went bankrupt, leaving them with nothing. They are suing Dany Garcia Johnson and accountant Emery Sheer. In the lawsuit, it stated Dwayne Johnson benefited and was a coconspirator. Johnson's publicist never responded to any questions. Dany Garcia Johnson's lawyers said they are filing to get the case thrown out and that the Costas were well aware of what they were investing in, saying the problems were the collapse of the real estate market and all the money involved is now gone.

--Bret Hart had a lot to say about the current WWE scene at http://espn980.com/shows/sports_saturday.php#

--Colt Cabana retained his NWA title in his best of seven series with Adam Pearce in a Boston street fight last night in Bridgewater, MA at the Knights of Columbus Hall before 200 fans. He split Pearce's head open with a belt shot and pinned him with a Russian leg sweep

Solid list. only one objection and that is how low they ranked the Poffos. ,top 3 can not be disputed. You know who ranked in at #1.

IDK about the Colons over DiBiases.
Guerreros belong over the Ortons.
Vachons should have been on the bottom.

Yes lets get rid of one of the best guys in the company because he is a pain to deal with. Stupid. A lot of top guys have been pains to deal with. I am not a huge Orton fan, but he is one of the few guys you have who can do it all. With the lack of top talent right now you do not get rid of one of them because he is a pain.

It is more than that. Vince is all about the money. If in the middle of a huge war with WCW he let go of his champ because he was making too much money and Vince wanted out of the contract, what makes you think he won't do it now with zero competition? If this was his first offense then I would agree with you but it is not. This guy regularly is paying fines for pot. Plus the other incidents.

Speaking of thin roster. Who all is hurt right now?

That would be a tough blow for 1 of the 2 tag teams in the WWE right now, if R-Truth has a broken foot.

I agree that it wouldn't make much sense. Unless.........

Vince could get out of a significant ten year deal. The downside is pretty big for the next seven years. Orton could go to TNA, give them a boost, and have no real negative impact on WWE. However, having some sort of competition could be a boost to WWE business. They are in that strong of a position, where they ask people to compete. As Bob Loblaw brought to my attention today, FCW is almost more stocked than the main roster. Let Orton go. As a business move.

Alberto Del Rio did not take part in Saturday's Smackdown house show in Salisbury, which seems to confirm reports that he suffered a concussion during Tuesday's Smackdwon taping.

I'm reporting Del Rio did not get a concussion, but the people reporting he did at the Smackdwon taping possibly did.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Orton situation:

The subject of drug testing is back in the news in a big way this past week when it comes to two of the biggest names in WWE and UFC, Randy Orton and Frank Mir.

The stories are not related past that point of being major names in each company.

WWE announced on 5/30 that Orton had been suspended for 60 days for a Wellness policy failure. It also came out this past weekthat the Nevada State Athletic Commission had granted Mir a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone prior to his 5/26 loss to Junior Dos Santos in a heavyweight title fight.

In the case of Orton, 32, it has been reported by Super Luchas and a number of other sources that Orton failed tests for both marijuana and the steroid Dianabol. Marijuana is a $2,500 fine, and a number of top stars view the fine as their pot tax. WWE increased the fine as a deterrent. Lower card wrestlers have been punished with more frequent losses and dropped pushes if they regularly tested positive for it, but main eventers have been pretty much left alone to pay their fines with no repercussions. The pot tax led to the use of Spice, a marijuana substitute, as something wrestlers were using frequently until WWE made that an illegal drug and unlike marijuana itself, one that would lead to a suspension, as happened late last year with both Ron Killings (R-Truth) and Matt Korklan (Evan Bourne).

Internally, those in WWE have been tight-lipped on the Orton suspension. The policy is considered confidential, past the reporting of failuires and suspensions, but no details as to the time frame or what were the details of the failure. The only person in the company who commented to us on it believed Orton was suspended for a positive test due to a tainted supplement. I was skeptical of Dianabol when the drug was named if only because you never hear about that drug anymore. It’s like the Betamax or eight-track machine of performance enhancing drugs, in the sense it’s not necessarily bad, but it’s now prevalent, never talked about and from another era. But the subject has been kept quiet regarding any kind of confirmation of the substance that caused the suspension (unlike with some recent suspensions like Rey Mysterio, R-Truth and Evan Bourne where it was pretty well established not only what the suspension was for, but when the positive test was first taken, which in the case of Mysterio and R-Truth, was months before the suspension). But there has been at least some accuracy of the Super Luchas stuff on this story.

They also reported Orton having a meeting on 6/1 with Vince McMahon, HHH and Kevin Dunn in Stamford which did not go well. However, another source claimed to have no knowledge such a meeting happened and said that if it had, Dunn would not have been part of it as that is not his department. Super Luchas described the meeting as hostile, claiming there are people lobbying for his termination as a cost cutting measure in the sense he has a ten-year contract through the early part of 2020 and his money is such that it’s not economically justified unless he is used in main events, and that with the second suspension, they will be leery to do so. The timing of the contract is believed to be accurate. The contracts are one-sided in the sense Orton can’t leave until that time to go elsewhere, but WWE can cut him at any time if they want to. Others have said that Orton is unlikely to be let go, but may not be brought back as soon as his suspension is over. But that may just be the normal protocol given the timing of a decision not to use him at SummerSlam to send him a message and cost him one of his biggest payoffs of the year. Another insider noted that there is a small, vocal pocket that is growing more outspoken about cutting bait on Orton, which is where the story came from. Vince McMahon is said to be going back-and-forth, but in the end, the belief was that they can’t and won’t get rid of him due to the depth issues. However, a new Smackdown opening was cut in production this week without Orton. A lot of Raw guys were put on it so because of the talent situation being what it is, the top guys are going to be appearing on both shows, but more often on Raw.

I believe it won’t be on the show that airs on 6/8, and was told it may never air, but internally they are saying losing Orton for a while isn’t going to be that big a problem and it’s the first time people are openly categorizing Punk as No. 2 as opposed to Punk and Orton being on the same level right behind Cena. In addition, the feeling is the face side on Smackdown will be fine with Sheamus, Christian and the returning Mysterio as well as Sin Cara, and if there’s a problem, they know they can turn Daniel Bryan whenever they want.

Even though there is a precedent with Jeff Hardy being pushed to the world title with two strikes, a number of people wondered, because of how close the Hardy thing came to blowing up in their face, that the mentality may change. Hardy was arrested on drug possession and trafficking charges just weeks after he had left the company and not long after he was world champion. Because of that, there has been discussion of how much of a spotlight you would put on someone with two strikes. While Orton brings differing responses from fans, among the wrestlers, he is almost universally regarded as one of the best performers in the company, and some would say the best all-around.

While Orton would be fired with a third strike, which would then eliminate the contract, nobody’s downside is so outrageous in WWE with the exception of probably The Rock and Brock Lesnar, since the big stars make most of their income based on production, pay based on their position on shows, PPVs and merchandise percentages and generally all top guys would be expected to beat their downside guarantee. Plus, with the company’s depth issue being what it is, and fear that it will get worse before it gets better, giving up on the No. 3 guy in the company who is only 32 and can work on top as a face or a heel for years to come makes no sense. It makes even less sense with so many guys who are at the top level (C.M. Punk, Alberto Del Rio) openly saying that aren’t going to be around that many more years. Add to that, John Cena has been having a lot of nagging injuries, Lesnar is unlikely to be around for the long haul, Rey Mysterio is likely having a few years left and Big Show, Mark Henry and Kane are all past 40. The only talent likely to have a ton of longevity from now, besides Cena, who will always be around, would be Daniel Bryan and perhaps Sheamus, and Sheamus is already 34. Bryan is probably going to wind up having a long run as a star, but is still the antithesis of what Vince McMahon has educated the people for the last generation of what is a headliner.

Another aspect is if Orton is cut, TNA would make a big play for him. While if one looked at things strictly as a business, it’s obvious Orton would be hired back again some time down the road, and he can over the long haul earn as much or more in one year in WWE as he could in two years in TNA. But TNA would offer a better schedule. And unlike many of WWE’s current stars who use gimmick names, since he goes by his real name, TNA will be able to bill him with his familiar name.

In addition, Orton, while not being in main events because of the company’s big push to make Sheamus as world champion into a legitimate top-tier star, was still the most popular wrestler on the Smackdown brand. Right now, with Orton out, the Smackdown house shows are headlined by Sheamus vs. Del Rio, Christian vs. Cody Rhodes and Kane vs. Khali (in the Orton spot). Rey Mysterio is scheduled to return at the end of the month, with him being available to start on the 6/25 Raw. With the strict Raw/Smackdown delineation a thing of the past, one would expect some people on the Raw side to be sent to the Smackdown side for touring, and in particular, Brodus Clay has been made for now a full-time Smackdown performer to add babyface depth. As noted last week, Cena was already booked for all Smackdown TV tapings for dark matches due to concern over ticket sales for the Tuesday shows which were not good in a lot of markets even before Orton was off the shows.

That move may or may not have been made with the knowledge of Orton being gone. Cena was advertised for several days on the same shows as Orton, but the lineups are made by Laurinaitis, who is one of the few people with knowledge regarding guys who may be suspended. Knowledge of impending suspensions can be weeks or months before the suspension is announced. But the booking of Orton in recent weeks makes absolutely no sense if the company had even two days of lead time of knowledge of the failure and the announcement of the suspension. And we’ve seen in many cases, often the knowledge of the failed test can be a couple of months before the suspension is announced.

This also is notable because reports were the writing team was not aware of Orton’s suspension until the company released it publicly and most read it on web site reports. The general protocol for someone who his suspended is to do an injury angle or come up with a storyline reason to explain their absence in their final television appearance. With Orton, his last TV saw him come out and they showed Dolph Ziggler, his scheduled replacement opponent at No Way Out, when Chris Jericho was suspended, watching. But Orton got in the ring and immediately laid out The Miz with an RKO, and that was the only thing he did on the 5/28 TV show. Orton didn’t work the 5/29 Smackdown taping (since the plan was to announce his suspension on 5/30 and Smackdown wouldn’t air until 6/1). This is hardly what the company would do to a suspended guy in most cases, let alone one that they were considering letting go, or would be leery to push upon his return. If anything, he seemed protected far more than someone who just failed a test. Most recently, R-Truth was booked in an injury angle before starting his suspension, and the normal protocol is to bring someone in for one last TV, and either beat them or hurt them on the last show. The obvious move for his final TV appearance would be for Ziggler to get a surprise win over Orton, thus elevating somebody, which they desperately need to do. It wouldn’t hurt Orton since by the time he came back a few months later, it would either be forgotten by fans happy to see him back, or could be used to start a program where Orton could get his wins back but Ziggler still benefitted by having one major televised win over a top guy.

Orton was also critical on Twitter of the decision to take him out of the lead of the new "Marine" movie, but realistically, the company had to do that once the pressure came from the Marines themselves over casting someone who deserted in a movie.

As we’ve seen with a number of the suspensions over the past few years, suspensions can come from a violation from months earlier.
Dianabol was the original anabolic steroid developed in the 1950s. As a general rule, it is believed to have only a four-to-ten day detection time in urine testing, although to be safe it’s considered a good idea to cease usage 17 days out.

But what makes the Orton case so unique is his standing, as for years, whether there is any validity to this or not, wrestlers in the company have always considered Orton as one of the company’s favorites. Again, whether true or not, the feeling is there is a double standard when it comes to testing. Still, Hardy was super popular, perhaps the single most popular wrestler in the company (although he was not pushed at that level as Cena was always the public face of the company since he is low maintenance and considered no-risk to have in that position, but he was Smackdown’s main star) when he was suspended 60 days and missed a WrestleMania. And he continued to be pushed at the same level, and was even given the world title again, even with two strikes and even after giving notice he was leaving. Both Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara are kids heroes and both were publicly outed for failures.

Still, with Orton, there has been controversy over him not being suspended in the 2007 Signature Pharmacy scandal along with the other wrestlers on the list of recipients of packages of steroids and other banned substances.

Of the full-time wrestlers, Orton had been No. 2 on the pecking order behind Cena, since Hardy left, until the rise of Punk. Even with Hardy there and before Edge was forced out due to a career ending neck injury, Orton was really pushed and protected as a top guy more than anyone but Cena. Only of late has Punk surpassed him for that position. He’s still young, actually younger than Punk and Sheamus for that matter, but has the experience in the sense he understands how to work his character better than almost anyone on the roster, and is an established long-term main eventer. Orton was the person chosen by the company and THQ to be the face of last year’s video game, which is a big deal because that means doing a lot of game marketing with the trust that you won’t embarrass the company in a spotlight position.

Until this past year, when the company has made the effort to brand Punk and Sheamus as champions, there was a string dating back years where almost every PPV show had either Orton or Cena in a title match.

As Orton’s second strike on the drug policy, his 60 day suspension would end 7/29, meaning Orton would miss the 1,000th Raw in his home city of St. Louis on 7/23. He would be able to return on the 7/30 Raw, in time for SummerSlam. The general company rule had been that if a wrestler’s suspension goes into the period building the show, he or she is usually not used until after that PPV. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but more that with a mid-level wrestler it really doesn’t matter. Orton is the type of wrestler who can be plugged into an angle in a week, so he could very well be at SummerSlam, the company’s No. 3 event of the year, but from all accounts, the mood right now seems to be to at least not have him appear on that show.

Estimates regarding 60 days off and what a wrestler of Orton’s level would be earning over the summer were that this would likely cost him in the range of $200,000. If he is not booked on SummerSlam and kept off a few weeks of TV and house shows after the 60 days, the amount he would have lost due to the positive test would be closer to $275,000, so this is no financial slap on the wrist.

It also means one more drug test related suspension and he would be fired. Based on the policy, if fired, he could not return to the company for one year, and then, if he did return, he would come back with two strikes. Orton was quietly suspended in August, 2006, before the period when WWE publicly announced test failures. He missed 30 days and there was an excuse given regarding taking time off to remodel his home, but it later came out it was exactly as reported. He had several other incidents that resulted in suspensions, disciplinary action, as well as non-action in 2006 and 2007 that did not count as strikes in the drug policy.

Orton, Matt Korklan (Evan Bourne), Robert Huffman (Booker T), Darren Matthews (William Regal) and Oscar Gutierrez (Rey Mysterio) also have two strikes on the current roster. No WWE wrestler has ever been suspended three times on the drug policy and the company been forced to fire them. The rule is that a third suspension means termination and the earliest they could be hired back would be another year. They would also return with two strikes. Huffman quit the company in 2007 after he was suspended for being on the Signature Pharmacy list, which was his second failure and a 60 day suspension that he quit over. When he returned, his two strike status returned.

Orton was suspended for 60 days after the 2006 WrestleMania when he was reportedly smoking marijuana inside the building at a live event shortly before Mania. The company did delay the suspension until after the big show. This in a sense was a drug issue but it was not a failed test and not counted against him. Orton has spoken about it, and blamed it on the official who turned him in (believed to be TNA Executive Bruce Prichard). It wasn’t the marijuana that was as much an issue, since WWE does not suspend talent for marijuana positives, as doing it so flagrantly in a public setting where it could have been very negative publicity for the company. The suspension at the time was meant to send a message to Orton. There were a number of incidents that he was not suspended for
when it came to discipline, so while the punishment may sound harsh, it was more an accumulation of things that led to the time frame of the suspension than a single incident.

In April, 2007, Orton was sent home by management after trashing a hotel room, doing a reported $30,000 worth of damage to the room, while on a European tour. He was not suspended for that incident. He did have to pay all damages. In fact, Orton headlined the Backlash PPV which took place right after the tour.
Orton’s name also came out in the Signature Pharmacy case in August, 2007. Unlike the other wrestlers whose name came up in an investigation of an Internet steroid distribution ring which would have doctors routinely write prescriptions for clients, including nearly 20% of the roster at the time, Orton was never suspended, nor was he given a second strike. Nobody has ever given an answer that holds water as to what happened.

Jerry McDevitt in 2010 told Irv Muchnick it was because Orton’s name was not on the list of wrestlers receiving packages from Signature Pharmacy when Albany prosecutors contacted the company. It’s also been reported in other places Orton wasn’t suspended because he had already been suspended in August, 2006, for the same violation. But both responses seem to have issues.

We spoke to someone who had a copy of the list of athletes on the list, and when I asked about Randy Orton, was given specifics of what and when. According to information in the documents, that went reported at the time, Orton received Somatotropin (a Growth Hormone) along with steroids Nandrolone (Decadurabolin) and Stanazolol (Winstrol V) in packages. The final package came February 2007, so it would seem to make no timing sense that a suspension in August could cover a violation six months later.

Orton was scheduled for the main event against Cena on the September 16, 2007, Unforgiven PPV at the time. Nandrolone was a red flag because it is the drug avoided the most by athletes in drug tested sports because it can stay in ones system and be detected usually for six months, and if someone is unlucky, as long as 18 months and the idea of wrestlers using that drug and not getting caught, unlike steroids that can’t be picked up for more than a few days, raised significant questions at the time.

Three different news sources (ESPN, Sports Illustrated and the New York Daily News) had different names although the lists were similar, of those receiving packages from Signature Pharmacy, along with the list we were able to reference. Orton’s name was listed in all three stories, so it doesn’t seem to make sense his name wouldn’t be on the list of names WWE received. In addition, another party with the complete list, when informed Orton was the only major name not suspended, responded by saying Orton was one of the most flagrant violators.

There was also a prior investigation where his name came up that had noted Orton receiving Stanazolol, Nandrolone, Testosterone, Oxandrolone (Anavar), Anastrozole (a drug used by steroid users to minimize side effects from steroids such as the development of Gynocomastia or bitch tits) and Clomiphene citrate (Clomid), but those were all during the period before the death of Eddy Guerrero. WWE did have a drug policy that included steroids in place at the time, but was doing no testing and not enforcing it. The company felt it was unfair, and it would have been, to take action against wrestlers during that period since it was tacitly understood that it was okay. After the death of Guerrero, McMahon told the wrestlers in a meeting a few days later that he was going to implement drug testing, and picked it up a few months later. But there was widespread skepticism of the validity of the program, particularly with so many wrestlers using steroids that should have been easily detected in packages from Signature Pharmacy and other investigations of doctors that came out in the wake of the Chris Benoit murders.

Still, the belief was Orton, who legitimately went through anger management classes, was a more mature and different person than he was years ago, when he seemed a lightning rod for trouble.

There is a lot to why Lesnar has not been mentioned on television the past two weeks, nothing has been done on his angle and no clips have been shown, no follow up has been on the Heyman and Lesnar storyline lawsuit nor has Heyman been on the show nor any "messages sent by Lesnar" been part of any TV. According to several sources, there is nuclear heat on Lesnar right now, a lot of which stems from his going to the UFC show and their knowledge that he met with Dana White. As noted last week, not only was Vince McMahon not behind it, but he wasn’t aware of it until it happened. But there were problems even before that point, which may have been why Lesnar decided to go to Las Vegas and feelers were sent. Those close to the situation say that Lesnar vs. HHH is still planned as the main event for SummerSlam and because it’s HHH’s angle, even with this heat, that match is almost surely going to happen. There have been problems since day one in the sense Lesnar got this sweetheart contract and has been difficult or impossible, depending on who you talk with, to deal with from almost the start. Lesnar was super high maintenance in his 2002-2004 run and Vince found him difficult then with his constant demands and wanting things changed, but now Lesnar is a tons bigger star and is said to be a completely different animal to deal with, plus he’s coming off his UFC success and money and even though he probably isn’t Dana White’s favorite person this week either, he can always make a deal to go back and make the same if not more money than he’s making here. As we stated from day one of the deal, this is a completely different person than Vince has ever had to deal with. Even though The Rock and Steve Austin and others have no financial worries and plenty to do, at the end of the day, they both love wrestling, and WWE is wrestling because they aren’t about to be doing TNA. Whatever ups and downs Vince may have or they may have, the relationship is always going to stay cordial at the end of the day. With Lesnar, there are trust issues dating back almost a decade and Lesnar also doesn’t love wrestling, it’s just something he does really well. Right now the company is trying to send a message to him by giving Show the push as the "I’m not an entertainer, I’m a badass in real life" position that was Lesnar’s line.

The line about Show being far tougher than a fake UFC fighter was meant as a shot at Lesnar. The funny thing is, Lesnar was likely not watching the show and probably wouldn’t care. Because they are still going on with Lesnar vs. HHH, at some point, probably soon, they’ll contact him, try and work things out, and start talking about the storyline on television. The belief is now that instead of keeping it going weekly with Heyman or clips, to just forget about it and bring it back in a few weeks when it’s time to bring it back. But it was the UFC thing that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. In addition, the attitude when the buy rate came in was almost exactly as many had predicted would happen in the sense when Vince was in the mode that he was going to sign UFC’s biggest star and at the time, particularly since he couldn’t get what he wanted at the 2011 Mania, that whatever it took to make the deal, he’d make it. But when the first buy rate came in for a "B" show, even with knowledge of what happened when Rock was on Survivor Series and with the Punk angle, that Vince would start thinking he made a bad major deal similar to Bret Hart in 1996 and Bill Goldberg in 2003. Another person noted that Lesnar signed for even fewer dates than most think and they blew through too many of them at once. Right now, he’s scheduled for SummerSlam, but there’s nothing in the fall including Survivor Series. It may be SummerSlam and Mania, or SummerSlam, Rumble and Mania, and that’s it. Another thing we were told was a message although again it’s one of those messages that nobody actually picked up on, was when HHH was on Raw doing a 1,000th episode plug, he was not selling the arm (he wore a
suit jacket so if there was supposed to be a brace, wink, wink, you wouldn’t see it allowing fans to believe what they want) and moving both arms freely while discussing the night he came back to Madison Square Garden after tearing his quad in 2002. Lesnar can always go back to UFC for a comeback fight, but long-term, being away from MMA and not training, combined with his being 34 and likely losing his speed at that age in what is a speed sport, for money and longevity, pro wrestling at this point is the better fit.

The Sports Business Journal last week had a big story about the escalating rights fees for sports on television. Brian Bedol was quoted as saying "The amount of money that the cable industry is paying for rights right now doesn’t make economic sense for anyone else. It’s likely that bubble is going to burst, and, at a certain point, those that are overpaying for rights–as almost always happens–are going to retrench and say it’s not worth what they’re spending and it’s not achieving the objectives that they’re going after. Then the pendulum swings the other way." The thing is, with UFC, they’re under contract for six-and-a-half more years, and things will change so many times between now and January 2019 that nobody knows what is going to happen. I don’t see WWE being hurt when their deals come up. WWE was hoping when its deals came up that it could share in the enormous growth of rights fees over the last year, and if things stay high, WWE delivers a consistent larger audience than most sports. I’d actually think WWE, because it delivers so many viewers for so little money in comparison, and the NFL, because NFL is so important in the value of a network, to not be harmed. However, what could continue to keep rights growing are if companies like Apple, Google, Facebook, Netflix or Microsoft get involved. In fact, if those three companies decide to go into picking up rights to major sports, that could be one of the most significant stories of the next year long-term for everyone, because multiple suitors increase the value. But thuse far all three of those companies have shown no indication they want to get into the sports rights game. What’s notable is if they do, WWE, with its short window contracts, could be the first beneficiary, since the Olympics are tied up until 2020, the NHL to 2021, the NFL to 2022. Youtube, which pays WWE $1 million per year in the article they aren’t interested in competing for major spots, and they are more looking at smaller niche sports.

Vince McMahon returns on the 6/11 three-hour Raw from Hartford to do a talent evaluation on the job John Laurinaitis is doing. McMahon coming back is partially a response to the poor rating on 5/28. At one point when they were building heat on Laurinaitis, the idea was to bring McMahon back at one point and have Laurinaitis join the kiss my ass club.

Regarding the WWE 13 video game, the roster list we had was not a confirmed list, but it’s pretty close. The roster won’t be released until August. The names we had will all be in the game, but there will be others not listed that are added. A key selling point of the game will be attitude era stars (1998-2001 WrestleMania era with Michaels & HHH as DX with Tyson being a key part of it and Austin and Rock of course) vs. current stars. It won’t be faction vs. faction type of a deal but options.

A few notes on the situation with Jericho in Brazil. The incident with Jericho kicking the flag took place at the beginning of his match, not the end. They wrestled about eight minutes before company officials after getting the word he could be arrested, took action. John Laurinaitis, who was running the tour, came to ringside to tell him to apologize, which he did. Then they continued the match. Jericho was not rushed out of the building or Brazil. He stayed at the arena with everyone else until the crew was taken together to the airport at 1 a.m. for the 3 a.m. charter group flight to Ecuador.

Tom Prichard, 52, was let go as a trainer in developmental and replaced by Bill DeMott. It’s almost poetic justice because in 2007, Prichard, who was first let go in 2004, was hired back to replace DeMott. Prichard was the lone holdover still in the company from the OVW days where Cena, Lesnar, Orton and others started and had definite opinions on how things should be done, which largely led to his being let go in 2004. He was also originally a Jim Ross guy and not a Laurinaitis guy, although that was the 2004 deal, as by 2007, he was a Laurinaitis guy. One notable Prichard story was that in late 2005, when Eddy Guerrero passed away, Ross had just had intestinal surgery and couldn’t attend the funeral. He had Prichard, who wasn’t with the company, read his eulogy as opposed to Laurinaitis, which at the time was considered a very unique decision.

Not sure if this was a tryout or not, but Perry Saturn was in Florida this week coaching.

After taking time off for shoulder surgery, as well as heal his knee and groin, Henry said on twitter that he is right now the healthiest he has been in five years.
A trend that nobody has talked about of late is the decline of people watching Raw on delayed viewership. So it’s not just a drop in rating, but people who use to Tivo it, tape it, whatever, has also dropped. Ever since Rock came back in February, 2011, people watching Raw on delayed viewership increased greatly, usually to around 400,000 per week. The last several weeks, the number was 340,000 on 4/23, 370,000 on 4/30, 277,000 on 5/7 and 332,000 on 5/14.

A new WWE title belt, to replace the spinner belt, will be debuting shortly. Punk made reference to it during a Q&A at the Philadelphia Comic Con on 6/2. Punk said he didn’t like the new belt and had been e-mailing people in the company complaints about it, although said it was better than the one he now has. He said the new belt is also about 20 pounds heavier than the current one.

Punk noted the weird coincidence about how his last three WrestleMania opponents, Mysterio, Orton and Jericho, are all suspended at the same time.

Nothing has been done over the Ambrose vs. Foley introductory angle of late and there are forces now against it that are right at the top.

Kelly noted on twitter that she’s spending this weekend with her boyfriend in Malibu and won’t be on the Raw house show tour of Spain. She’s been used a lot less of late and has hired ATA Management to represent her for outside appearances and bookings.

Edge and Phoenix are now an item, as they were together at the New Jersey Devils vs. Los Angeles Kings game at the Prudential Center in Newark on 5/30. If you’re keeping score, Phoenix had a decently long relationship with Rhodes, then ended up with Punk, which based on Punk’s comments, left with bitter feelings. It’s been noted that Lita and Edge were together before Lita and Punk. They could do something around this but Edge is retired, for real, as in not coming back.

Former WWE star Ken Doane, aka Kenny Dykstra, posted the following on Twitter regarding who he believes in WWE is lobbying for Randy Orton's release:

"When I was there and Orton got suspended for the first time, [John] Cena told me he wanted Orton fired. So now I'm sure it's probably him trying for RKO's release. Regardless, hopefully he don't get fired since he has a young child and is the best story teller in WWE. They do still tell stories in the ring right?"

It's worth noting that in the Randy Orton DVD The Evolution of a Predator, John Cena is quoted as saying that he was not fond of the "old Randy Orton" and that there are two versions of Orton; the old Orton and the new Orton. Cena joked that "the old Orton was an asshole."

Hey clown shoes. Best wishes in your future endeavors, because it won't even be in wrestling now.

Sounding like a good possibility that Del Rio will be out of the ppv due to a concussion.

WWE is attempting to load up on the 7/23 1,000th Raw show from St. Louis, as the first step to establishing the new regular 8 p.m. start time for the three hour shows.

The mentality is to treat this show like a major PPV, with all hands on deck and every major star being reached out to, including even talk of The Undertaker returning on the show. That’s not a done deal, but it has been suggested.

They’ve also called up all the usual nostalgia characters like Sgt. Slaughter, Jim Duggan, Gene Okerlund, Tony Atlas, Roddy Piper, Dusty Rhodes, Jimmy Hart and the Legends House type of crew for appearances, although they did that so recently on Smackdown for an episode that actually bombed in the ratings that I don’t know if it’s time to go back in that direction. Bobby Heenan’s name was brought up as well, although he is not in good health, can barely speak and couldn’t do much more than a wave.

The idea floating around is to have both an old school and current production vibe to the show, bringing back as many stars of the past due to the milestone of a show that debuted in 1993. The idea we were told regarding Undertaker is that they want to be able to advertise his appearance ahead of time in hope it will help ratings, and to start promoting the show hard with a three-week television build, including building a PPV quality line-up ahead of time. That could cause confusion because they will also be building their regular PPV show on 7/15, so the strong hype with matches announced may not be until the following day. The special, with the hope it would draw a larger than usual audience in the final two hours, would also push the main events for SummerSlam on 8/18 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. They also want to introduce some new talent on the show. The first major name advertised locally is Shawn Michaels, as they are advertising a DX Reunion. Michaels himself said he knew nothing about a DX reunion but did confirm he would be on the show. The local television ads are built around a DX Reunion and announcing John Cena vs. Big Show & John Laurinaitis as the main event. I’d suspect Brock Lesnar would be back then (if not sooner), since that would be the second week of the SummerSlam build. They can’t advertise Lesnar this early for anything yet, due to storyline issues,,as one would think around 7/9 or 7/16 they’ll have their storyline reason for him to come back and he’ll show up with advertising. An angle where Lesnar uses the Kimura to break Michaels’ arm is a natural, but writing about it here doesn’t help its chances of happening, and if it is going to happen, it wouldn’t be on this show. This show is going to build to the 8/6 Raw show in San Antonio which is going to be Shawn Michaels Appreciation Night.

HHH should be appearing regularly on Raw leading up to that show and Lesnar should be appearing most weeks. But with it being the first three hour show and they have to establish that new start time, it’s going to be all hands on deck.

The writing team is currently being pushed to come up with a, "knock your sox off," angle for the summer. The idea is to do something to jolt interest stemming from the rating and somewhat stagnant product, similar to the Nexus angle in 2010 and the C.M. Punk angle in 2011. That’s a lot easier said than done, particularly since both angles are the type that can’t be repeated for a number of years and be anywhere near as effective.

I don't trust these fucksticks to come up with anything. CM Punk was at Stone Cold levels of over last year, and they totally fucking blew it, all so HHH could give his buddy Nash a payday.

Laurinaitis out & Triple H in as VP of Talent Relations?, WWE suggests Laurinaitis strictly a TV character

Jun 11, 2012 - 3:05:22 PM

By James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor

WWE has yet to made an official announcement on changes to their Talent Relations department, but WWE is indicating that Triple H has taken over. John Laurinaitis's name has been removed from WWE's list of corporate executives, which indicates he has been phased out of the Executive VP of Talent Relations position.

WWE is now listing Triple H (Paul Levesque) as "Executive Vice President, Talent and Live Events," and notes that Hunter "oversees the talent relations and talent development departments" in his corporate role.

Laurinaitis no longer the head of Talent Relations appears to be part of a re-structuring spearheaded by Triple H. Ty Bailey, the former #2 man in Talent Relations, was let go earlier this year during the initial stages of the re-structuring.

At this point, Laurinaitis appears to be mainly a TV character, but he may also retain some responsibilities in Talent Relations. Laurinaitis has begun appearing regularly on WWE house shows, including traveling with the Raw crew for an international tour in Spain last week. Laurinaitis is also now being listed on the talent roster for TV tapings.

THis is a Spoiler Alert and I'm guessing will be on Smackdown.

For the Big SHow vs Cena match Sunday, it is now, if Big SHow loses, Laurniatis is fired and if Cena loses he is fired.

Probably used to sell PPV's, but this is stupid, could have built Big Show after last month's ppv, now with this stip, Cena probably wins, unless they want to give Cena time off for his divorce issues.

no comment as I haven't watched yet.

part 2

blogs.thescore.com/aftermath/2012/06/13/bret-hart-part-2-ric-flair-sabotaged-his-matches/

In part 2 of my latest sit down with Bret Hart, we continue to focus on 1992, one of the most eventful years in the Hitman’s career. Bret goes into detail in talking about SummerSlam 1992 vs the British Bulldog, and also an interesting talk about Ric Flair, winning the WWE championship at a non televised event and why it happened that way (as opposed to TV or PPV), and also how Bret feels Flair was sabotaging his matches while he was champion.

I'm picturing a 12 year old Bob Loblaw bitching out a Randy Savage Wrestling Buddy for botching his finisher. Also envisioning Bob Loblaw getting bitched at for lighting the living room table on fire for said finisher.
