At the time of that Olympics I was hanging out at Quencher's a lot. My friend Tom and I were in there drinking and talking about how ridiculously easy the gold medal was going to be. Two regulars, a guy named Andy Servatko and a Puerto Rican dude named Teli, who fancied themselves big hoops guys, overheard us and butted into the conversation. They suggested the U.S. might actually lose. My friend and I offered them every opponent plus 30 for $100 bucks a game- all games. They took the fucking bet. I think 32 was as close as any final got. Throughout the Olympics the two of them kept repeating, "Anything can happen in sports." To this day whenever anyone says, "Anything can happen" and my friend Tom and I are together, one of us will say, "except the Dream Team winning by less than 30."

I had no idea they lost that first scrimmage to the college guys. The college dudes had a pretty good squad. Webber, Hurley, Penny Hardaway, Jamal Mashburn, Grant Hill. I think I saw Allan Houston too.
