Shaq instead of Laettner

Laettner was the NCAA player of the year (Didn't he win it two straight years?). It made sense to take him. In hindsight, obviously Shaq would have been the better choice, but Laettner was fine.

Agreed.

I think the team ended up being decent

Mullin averaged 26 PPG, 0.5 BPG, 2 SPG, 4 APG, 6 RPG, and shot 54%FG and 88%FT. That is pretty damn good. That is a borderline first round fantasy pick nowadays.

Piling on....

For five consecutive seasons, from 1988 until 1993, Mullin scored an average of 25 or more points and five rebounds

Not to mention he was all NBA second team in 1991.

The guy was one of the all time greats as evidenced by his induction into the HOF.

Not that this last point has any bearing on his inclusion into the DT, but the way he turned his life and career around after conquering alcoholism is one of the great success/redemption stories in NBA history, especially when you consider how many players don't comeback from that.

It also ushered in the equally bad representation of the us olympic hockey team.

The NHL players were trashing Japanese hotel rooms in '98.

Which player is better in 1991?

Player A: 16.2 ppg, 43 fg%, 9.3 apg, 3.3 rpg, 1.6 spg

Player B: 25.7 ppg, 54 fg%, 4.0 apg, 5.4 rpg, 2.1 spg

Which player was better in 1992?

Player A: 18.5ppg, 45 fg%, 7.2apg, 3.2rpg, 1.5spg

Player B: 25.6ppg, 52 fg%, 3.5apg, 5.6 rpg, 2.1spg

The answer is Player B and its not even close.

My favorite (Pippen) line of the show: "We were gonna even guard him (Kukoc) on the bench".

I still laugh about the level of disgust they had for Krause (continued through Kukoc).

Be lucky you didn't know me. The eleven year old me would've punched you out for that.

The eleven year old you would've tried. You would not have been successful. :D

I felt bad for him. He was a draft pick and never did anything to Pip or MJ. Obviously now I can see why they felt like they did. But at the time I thought they would dissuade Toni from coming to da Boo.

Isiah was at the very least equal to Mullin in '91. Shakes stats don't include defense. Without looking at stats from that year I'd say Mullin was probably in the 12-15 range.

Laettner was not only way more marketable than Shaq at that point, but his game suited the international style of play better than Shaq's. That's actually another reason to have Mullin over Isiah though too.

The guy was all NBA second team. I'd love to see a list that has him anywhere outside the top 10 in 1991. His defense wasn't amazing, but he was more than competent, played d with smarts and body positioning similar to Larry Bird. Isiah was no great defender either, not sure why you would bring up defense when comparing the two players.

Mullin was great. Anyone that says he shouldnt have been on that team is stupid.

I love sports for the Irony that just happens. With the way Pippen and the US pummeled Kukoc in the Olympics, Kukoc ended up saving Pippen's ass and reputation in the 94 playoffs vs the Knicks. Pippen refused to go back in a PLAYOFF game with 1.8 secs because Jackson called a last second shot for Kukoc instead of him. Everyone knows Toni was a better end of game closer and Phil felt that way too but Scottie disagreed I guess. Toni hit the shot. The crowd forgave Pippen.

What happens if Toni misses that shot and the Bulls lose in Overtime? Would Pippen not re enter the game in Overtime and make it worse? The series ended up going seven with the Bullies losing but that would have made it a short series. Maybe even a sweep. Pippen ended up having a pretty good series and may have won the series if Hugh Hollins were never born.

THE HAND IS PART OF THE BALL DAMMIT!!!

Image

It was playoff time, 1994, and a basketball game was hanging in the balance. These were the moments Kerr and Pippen had discussed at length since Michael Jordan had retired and signed with the Chicago White Sox to play minor league baseball. Pippen understood it was his job now to lead the Bulls in these critical times. Everyone else in the league—not to mention his teammates—expected it. Again and again, Pippen had insisted he was up to the task.

And yet, with 1.8 seconds remaining in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, a tie ball game against the Knicks, Pippen was ... taking himself out?

"I was shocked," Kerr admits now. "The only way to describe it was total disbelief. Here was a guy who had done so much for our team, who had been our leader all year long. He was, and still is, one of the greatest teammates I've ever had. But on that day, I think all the pressure and frustration of our season caught up with him, and he snapped."

I haven't seen this yet. One of my favorite Dream Team memories was the Sports Illustrated photo shoot. They were photographing Magic, Bird, and Jordan and the photographer was posing the three guys. Bird was in the center with the other two on each side. Magic leaned over and said to Bird, "Hey Larry, make sure you don't touch Michael. They might call a foul on you."
