No one can play both roles. When a kid doesnt have both parents, he just doesnt have one.

Single mom or Single Dad can try and be everything, but they arent.

I get the sentiment and when an outsider wishes a single mom happy fathers day I get it.

I find it to be in poor taste when a woman writes it about themselves

I agree.

I also agree with Frank that it sometimes is offputting though, even when said sincerely about another person or others. I feel like it perpetuates the stereotype that moms job is irreplaceable while dad's is easily replaceable.

Like you said, I understand their sentiment. I just dont share it.

Also, I had an idea a while back for a service that helps unexpected first time fathers deal with the immense responsibility thrust up on them (Help them get jobs, with the paperwork in the beginning, with court stuff if necessary ). There's all kinds of that stuff for women.

No. Just because a woman made a bad choice and let a future deadbeat scumbag blow his load in her does not make her a dad. They get mother's day, they don't need to be attention whores and take our day too.

How does the acknowledgement of single moms on father's day undercut the credit fathers--assuming they play a productive role in the lives of their children--receive on father's day?

I was raised by a single mom. Even though we had a volatile relationship for much of my youth, I was still incredibly grateful for all the sacrifices she made in performing what are traditionally described as "motherly" and "fatherly" duties. Thanking her for her love and support on father's day hardly diminishes the gratitude or respect you might deserve or receive from your children on the same day.

The best mother can never be a Father and vise versa. The day is meant to celebrate Fathers. If someone wants to thank their mom, it's fine. But mothers make shitty fathers...

A mother obviously can't "be" a father, but she sure as heck can play the role of a father. And quite well, too, in many cases--your unsubstantiated generalization notwithstanding.

For the most part, the way I saw it present was a way that came across as "single Mom's are better than single Dad's"

Every parental situation is unique, but there are single parents that are bad, there are married/dating parents that are bad....and obviously a lot that are great parents. It came across-- to me-- from a lot of people that I saw on Facebook as "should be called single mom's day, not fathers day"

Sorry to everybody who had a single parent, but to say something like "happy fathers day to all the Dad's out there. And a special thanks to single mom's" to me comes across as a shot at the millions of good Dad's (a lot of whom are on this board) that are out there; single or otherwise.

I'm not attempting to stir anything. I, like a few others in this thread, have grown tired over the years of people wishing mothers a "Happy Fathers Day". Even before I was a father, I looked at it as a way to build someone up (the mother) while subtley tearing another down (the perceived debeat dad). Sure, not everyone intends for it to be that way, but you never hear about horrible mothers on mothers day. It's almost like you can't hear 1 positive sentiment on Father's Day without hearing 2 negative.

Sinlge mothers play the role of single mothers. Very well, in some instances. But as hard as they may try, they can't be a real father. If, God forbid, something happened to my wife I couldn't be a mother to my kids. As hard as I might try, It just isn't the same.

I guess I don't see the "shot" you detect in the quote above, but I can't say I'm passionate enough about the issue to debate it further.

I had a great father's day with my son and wife. That's about all that matters to me. Sounds like you had a good day with your family, too. Glad to hear it.

Why a "special thanks" to single moms? Is a plain thanks not good enough?

Agree to disagree. I just take it personally because I'm lucky enough to have a great Dad, and lucky enough to see some friends and family around me (including people on the board) be great Dad's as well.

It was THEIR day. IMHO, either simply say "happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there" or don't say anything at all.

I get what Krazy Ivan is saying. It's not like on Veterans Day that people would send a shoutout to policeman or firefighters or people who work. The day is for veterans.

A special thank you to all the white people for their accomplishments should be made every day in February.
