I have never in my life referred to the store as "The Jewels". I know that's what Nick Digilio calls it. Do people where you live refer to the store as "The Jewels"?

I've been kicked in the jewels before, but have never referred to Jewel as The Jewels.

My stepfather who was a professional shoplifter liked to refer to himself as a "Jewel thief".

I'd like to know as well. I'm guessing it's an old dumb meme from somewhere like lawer or balck.

The "Jewels" by me might be going belly up. Mariano's is the new spot for grocery shopping in the Arlington Heights area. I don't think their prices are that great but it's all in the presentation. The folks at Mariano's wear ties and white shirts. They have a little cafe and other stuff that "Jewels" does not.

Are you talking about the one on Vail Street? If it goes, it's for the best. It's old and cramped. A sit-in-the-cart-sized Curious Hair went to that Jewel, when it was just "Jewel" and not "Jewel-Osco," before they opened the one up at Rand and Palatine. I was back there a couple years ago and I kept bumping into people and things. If they repurposed it as some sort of specialty store for people who live downtown and just need a few things now and then rather than loading up the SUV every time, maybe it could work, but they're trying to fit a full-sized store into like 65% of the space.

I went to that Mariano's last time I was in town and I didn't think it was that great. I found it loud and crowded.

EDIT: oh and appending an "s" to stores that don't have it on the sign is a Chicago dialect thing. (Witness also "Carson's" and "Field's.") Coming from Nick D., though, it sounds like a bit of an affectation, as it's mostly in generations older than his. It'd be like if he made excessive reference to his frunchroom.

I live right near there. I too fail to see the Mariano's magic but I must be the only one. They are definitely hurting both Jewels as well as the Town and Country Dominicks.

It's just a Pick-n-Save with the kind of upscale bakery/deli sections not quite required by the discerning customers of Mukwonago.

I cringe when people add an "s" to Dominick.

That's extremely offensive to those who are fucked in the head.

Not to mention the rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers and Methodists.

No.

Mariano's forced the closure of the Dominick's in Vernon Hills. The Jewel stores in Mundelein and Libertyville (across Rte. 21 from Mariano's) seem to still be busy. Mariano's is a little more expensive. The organic section is larger and the beer selection is better. But, that's really about it.

I'd rather avoid the insanity that is the Mariano's parking lot and hit the Jewel, Polish Deli, and DiCarlo's liquors in Mundelein anyway.

We don't have Jewel here. People shop at The Krogers.

They built a Meijer's in Melrose Park and it sucks.

Not only is not a Supercenter, it isn't 24 hours, and the prices are high.

You're better off going across the street to the Target's. :D

Some company's cave.

People kept calling Federal Express "Fed Ex" so they changed their name. Same with an east coast restaurant chain called "Friendly". In 1989 they changed to "Friendly's" because that's how people referred to it.

I can't think of a less desirable town/city in Illinois than Melrose Park.

Every person I've ever met who is actually FROM the city of Chicago calls it "the Jewels". I call it that as well cause I think its cooler that way. And its not just "Jewels", you have to say "the Jewels"

And the store sucks nowadays, I live a block away from the one at Addison and Elston and always drive the extra 10 minutes to go to Mariano's at Roscoe and Western.

Hey hey hey hey hey ..... gimmick infringement!

(Montgomery Ward's is a good example of the superfluous "s" though .... never have actually heard someone, as part of their normal parlance, say "Jewels")

It's a South Side, old time Back Of the Yards type of thing ... wife's family was from around there and they all said Jewels. They also said Dominick, versus Dominick's.
