Back in mid-April, a 16-year streak had come to an abrupt end when ABC News' "Good Morning America" actually beat NBC News' "Today Show" in the morning news/talk ratings. It was a streak that dated back to 1996. While the 2 morning shows have gone back and forth since "GMA" won the week of April 23rd, there might be trouble brewing involving "Today" in general.

Late last month, "Saturday Today" co-host Amy Robach signed off after 7 years alongside Lester Holt. Amy signed off, coinciding with the expiration of her contract with NBC News. Robach & "Sunday Today" co-host Jenna Wolfe had split the co-hosting duties on the weekend editions of "Today" since 2007, but Amy's NBC ties date as far back as 2003 when she was a daytime anchor on MSNBC. Amy has since joined ABC News as a New York-based general correspondent.

Now, there are heads scratching once again on "Today". This morning, former co-host Meredith Vieira joined Matt Lauer and weather guy Al Roker originated the show from London for coverage of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee from Buckingham Palace. Confused? Vieira technically left the show nearly a year ago to spend more time with her own family, and Ann Curry, the show's longtime news reader, was announced as her replacement on "Today". Curry was away the last couple of days on vacation, according to an NBC News spokesperson, and that she'll return tomorrow.

This Saturday marks the one-year anniversary since Curry replaced Vieira as "Today's" co-host, but a closer look shows that "Today" has experienced a 4% decline in total viewers, as well as a 9% decline among adults ages 25-54, the age bracket considered most attractive to advertisers. "GMA" by comparison is up 4% among total viewers & 8% among the 25-54 age bracket. "GMA" is the ONLY morning show experiencing any kind of growth based on these numbers, according to Nielsen. Something to keep an eye on as the summer progresses.
