For as long as there are 2 all sports radio stations in Chicago, one will always be live, local call-in/analysis during morning drive. If The Score ditches it, you can bet AM1000 will pick one up. There is nearly always overnight news to discuss, be it scores, injuries, trades or D.W.I's. Plus there is the notion of tuning to one station and leaving it there all day, which is hugely advantageous in the Personal People Meter ratings data-gathering model. The fact the Mike North's last incarnation on then Score was beaten by a national show was more a testimony to how unlistenable it was than how superior the other station's product was. As for the rest of the new network, my guess is that The Score will be more of a content generator than content user.

I don't agree. ESPN has shown that it is impervious to local tastes. Mc Neil was the one who pushed them into more local shows but I think their inclination would be to have national from 6 pm until 10 am.

Why would you dare go to Craig's list when we have been talking about this for years right here?

Maybe The Score goes back to being private owned?

maybe a privately owned station just hires a bunch of old score guys and does the same thing.

I miss the "Mom & Pop" stores. They added idenity to a neighborhood. It really is sad what big box stores have done to this country's landscape.

TOO MUCH FUCKING SPORTS

It's where the money is. But leaving that all aside, I really like what NBC sports has done so far. I can't speak for hockey, but their boxing and horse racing coverage has been high quality. If they can consistently deliver high quality broadcasts of niche sports, I think there's value in that.

Who wants to be a co-host on my radio project, Talk About Sports And Shit Like That? We'll take calls, talk about vintage VHS porn, I'll berate people who talk about Phil Emery's history of drafting quality players. It will be great.

I thought they did a great job with the rugby world cup. They made it very accessible to the casual fan without being condescending.

Anything that gets sports broadcasts away from ESPN and Fox is valuable.

What really caught me by surprise in that press release is that WIP, of all stations, will go 24/7 national. For those of you without an encyclopedic knowledge of radio station callsigns, that's Philadelphia's sports station. Lots of luck with that one, guys!

As a lover of unintentional comedy, I completely support this move. Philly fans are like White Sox fans who exist solely on a diet of Four Loko. "Dere is NO excuse fer losin to da freekin METS. If Amara dussen swinga trade fer a bat, I'm DONE wit dis guy, gnomesayin Glen?"

I realized an earlier response wasn't very clear. I said I normally wait for more information before forming a set opinion. In this case, it was pretty easy to say this is bad for pretty much everyone except Dan Bernstein. Even with the webio disaster, I still believed this market could support another sports radio station. If it's financed properly, and legally, a third station could be the good thing to come from this move.

It's the best chance to get Mike Murphy back on the air where he belongs.

There was talk about a third sports talk radio station in Chicago when the White Sox last radio deal with The SCORE & the Bulls' rights-free deal with ESPN Radio 1000 expired, guys.

The man who signs the checks for BOTH the Bulls & Sox, Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, was reportedly in talks with Jeff Smulyan, the former Seattle Mariners' owner and one of the bosses of Indianapolis-based Emmis Communications, former owners of 97.9 The LOOP & the defunct Q101, in regards to a third sports talk station. I think the deal fell through in large part because of the economy and start-up costs that didn't make such a station feasible. As a result, the Bulls ended up signing an extension with ESPN 1000, while the Sox ended up signing a 5-year extension with The SCORE.

The ONLY thing I'm not sure about is whether ESPN 1000 will pay a rights fee to continue broadcasting the Bulls starting next season. Based on what I remember reading, ESPN Radio didn't pay such a fee. I'm reasonably sure The SCORE does pay a rights fee to carry the White Sox.

To my knowledge, WSCR 670 The SCORE & the station that started the sports talk phenomenon, New York's WFAN, are the ONLY outlets that broadcast live & local overnights. It wasn't that way a while back either in WSCR's case, as they used to air FOX Sports Radio from midnight on many years ago due to corporate cutbacks.
