Just found out from the vet that my Lionel broke his pinkie toe on his front right paw. Happened Saturday at the dog forest preserve. Threw him a ball and it took a bad hop, he reached back for it and planted his foot in a small ditch. Thought it might be a sprain, but he couldn't weight bear so I took him in this morning. Just got the bad news that he has to be in a splint and cast for 4-6 weeks and engage in limited activity.

So, I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen and what exactly the limited activity meant for your dog?

My guy is a very active slightly overweight english yellow lab. He goes to daycare 5x a week and I take him to the beach on weekends. He LOVES swimming. Was gonna take him up to my parent's lakehouse in Green Lake, WI next week, but looks like I have to scratch those plans.

I'm worried that he's gonna baloon in weight if he has to stay sedentary for the next month and a half.

Limited means only taking him out if he needs to go to the bathroom. At least until he stops limping.

Switch him to weight management formula food and feed him only a couple cups a day. He should be fine in month with no ballooning of weight. He will probably be pretty depressed, though.

Sorry to hear. My dogs have had a few things over the years where you have to hold them back.
Do you just leave a bowl of food out for him to eat? I know what works for me is to feed them a
certain amount in the morning and night otherwise my dogs would eat me out of house and home
and be huge. I know it is tough for active dogs to adapt. Try to play with him inside as you can.
Maybe some tug of war if he is laying on a dog bed or something. At the very least just try to
pet him and show some affection. He'll definitely be bummed out. Some of the other ideas above
seem reasonable. If he is a fast healer maybe it will only be 3 weeks. Good luck.

I'm glad he's not seriously hurt, but I have to ask.

Can he still lick his balls?

+1. Having had to do this too many times I agree with Tbone and will add:
Buy a cage area or two and set him up in the area where you are at the most and in bedroom. That way he is limited on his movement but still with you.
He will not eat as much as he will be inactive, so if he is a free feeder good time to train him on twice a day and pick it up. Limit table scraps.
Take him out on leash only.
It will suck for both of you but gotta do it for him.

thanks for the advice. Just got back from the vet, its worse than I thought. Pretty serious compound fracture. Doc says no activity for at least 8 weeks. No playing at all. Just going outside to use bathroom.

My guy's gonna be miserable. This couldn't have happened at a worse time. Summer is his favorite time, I take him down to the beach all the time and every few weeks we go up to wisconsin where he spends the whole weekend in the lake. Was going to go up there next week for a week of relaxing and golf and now gotta cancel that.

Plus he spends a lot of time with his nephew, my brother's dog who is non stop play, so we gotta keep them apart for a couple months.

But, gotta do it cause if it doesn't heal well he's gonna need surgery. :(

Being a Lab, you're pretty much going to have to pet him for 3 hours a day...

cut down on the protein, if he is going to be inactive he does not need much to food.

In order to get one of our dogs to shed some pounds (already active and well-exercised, but a ravenous eater) we, on our vet's advice, cut back on her food and supplanted her diet with green beans (canned/"no salt added" or fresh, if that's feasible.) They are very low in calories and and easliy digested ,and they make up for the volume in the smaller food portions, so your dog doesn't feel hungry all day. It worked well, and we ended up having to add green beans to our other dogs' food, as they were jealous.

You ever feed raw? I mostly feed my dogs all raw...like they were intended to eat ..like a wolf, kibble was invented like 65 years ago ..before that for 2k plus years dogs ate real food.. Chicken, beef, eggs ..bison and venison ...the dog shit won't smell and turns to white dust in a week or so..like coyote scat minus the fur.And the real raw bones clean teeth and gums while building up jaw and neck muscle.

How did dogs for all those years order their eggs?

that's exactly what the vet said, to supplement with carrots or green beans.

As stated, cut down on his food. BTW, what are you feeding him? The only thing that goes in my dogs' bowl is Fromm brand premium grain free dog food, from cattle farms in a germantown part of Wisconsin. Grain in food gives dogs lots of problems, including cancer.

( I don't recommend you switch your dog's food, but did want to comment on the Fromm dog food)

Q., This is what I feed my two dogs, and that is it. They have 3 or 4 flavors that you can intermingle from bag
to bag for variety and it won't bother the dogs stomach or anything. I go through a bag every 3 weeks so at
$55 a bag it isn't cheap but I haven't had any health problems with either one in all the years I have given it
to them ( 5 ) and keeps their coats nice. My older boxer is over 12 and the vet was shocked he didn't have any
growths or tumors on this body. He asked me what I fed him and he said that it was very good food and not
to switch it up.

I would ask Rickey Henderson to come over to your place and call your dog fat.

What you say is true of humans too. I'd rather eat what is available now vs. what people ate in the 1500s.

I would, but Rickey's already done enough for me. Don't want to impose.
