I have a wireless router in the office for a couple of computers I use. A person in my office complex asked if she could borrow my wireless access code as her SBC connection was down. I said sure thinking she would have it fixed in a day or so. She hasn't done so. I could be an ass and just change the pass code, but not really PC unless I know there is a problem.

So I ask...is there a problem? I have sensitive information on my computer, but have no idea if it can be easily accessed by someone using the same wireless router.

What is my exposure, if you will? Anything to worry about?

Do all 3, in order of Doug, Douchebag, and Hawg.

actually....sleep with her first, then take pictures (while she's sleeping), then change the password.

See, my thinking was, you change the password first, then she comes over all pissed at Beni....then Beni puts the "I'm sorry" mack down, she forgives him and they have sex.....and then while she's sleep, he takes pictures....see?

It's only a problem if you don't want someone reading your emails, checking your bank accounts, and installing viruses on all of the computers on the network.

Well, he should be able to sleep with her based upon his generosity for said wireless usage...
pictures...
after he changes the password, she'll either do him again to gain access, or he can claim it as "payment" for the free internet.
either way, she's a whore.

Interesting options. Penthouse letters here I come.

She is meh, with a dude that is pretty computer savvy, which I am not. I get some business out of them for my girlfriend, so I can't go all scorched earth.

I am curious how one goes about accessing the other computers. Is it easy to do?

I was just joking.

In reality, it depends on your specific security setup with shared folders. If you have any open folders, whether it is a Network Attached Storage(NAS) server or a folder on a computer that anyone can access they can get to it too if they are on the same network. For instance, I have a local Linkstation networked hard drive. The public folders would be accessible to anyone on my network. Any password protected ones would be visible.

Go to "My Network Places" or "Network" and see what folders are there.

They can't just get into any other computer. You have to grant that access.

Now, someone with super hacker skills could probably do it, but in reality that person could break into your network regardless even with a password.

you can ban her mac address/machine.

in addition to password security, you can also, and you probably should, only allow approved machines (by mac address) access the router. i'd also turn off visibility/broadcasting so it's not easily discoverable. also, a moat with gators covering the perimeter of the router's effective range

I checked the My Network Places, and the only thing listed is a MY Websites on MSN, which I don't have. On the left there is a section called "other places" which lists the computer desktop and My Documents, which would be a problem.

From what you are saying, it doesn't appear as though another person could access what I am viewing online. Passwords would be a concern.

You should be good assuming you trust the person to not be doing more advanced ways of hacking your stuff, but as I said a good person can do this with or without your permission.

The bigger concern is what exactly she is doing with your router. Just remember that anything she does is traced back to you since it is your router.

This is the correct answer. I would definitely change the password also. You may trust her, but do you also trust everyone in her office? Who knows how easily accessible her computer is to others with more devious intent? And as Rick said her browsing habits are now yours since it is traversing through your router. It is difficult to be both nice and secure - better to be safe and a jerk IMO.

Catch her doing something inappropriate, then tell her to give you some head (without the teeth) in exchange of your silence.

But first, ask her if she would rather watch The Thin Red Line or Saving Private Ryan.
