i don't know what this means.

"mash" would still not make my top 10 list.

That would mean that your list contains 2 worthy picks of iconic instrumental theme songs. The rest.... utter trash.

the instrumental part kills me. i'm rather a fan of the old intro to manimal.... and in terms of insturmentation, the go-bots theme song kicks all of the other songs' asses

hah. hardly.

i think this thread is just proof that it's hard to make a top 10...maybe a top 20 would suffice. but i was the only one man enough!

and k--MNF is not really a "TV Show". it's an event. if you're going that route, i would take the old NBC basketball theme and CBS's 1992 sunday football theme 1 and 2.

Sanford & Son, Miami Vice, A-Team, 90210 are all good ones.

But you guys are missing the clear winner.

I don't see how more people aren't rating this as the best. That and Benny Hill (if it is considered a theme and not just a song used as a theme.)

The M*A*S*H theme isn't really an instrumental. It has lyrics.

But the lyrics are only in the film. As far as the TV show is concerned, it's an instrumental. I guess you could say that its being adapted from a song with lyrics and vocals fundamentally informs the character of the song, but when I'm up late watching Fox 32 and I see that helicopter flying, I don't hear anyone telling me about the painlessness of suicide, so here it is.

same with the UK "Office" theme. it's instrumental but it's clipped from "handbags and gladrags". if you wanted to, you could say the UK "office" theme is an instrumental theme, because the show theme itself is instrumental.

i don't know why that's hard to understand though...

IMHO, there's Hawaii Five-O, and then the rest.

Theme from SWAT was pretty kick-ass too.

Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent were great.
Should have also thrown LA Law in there
Hill Street Blues was a classic.

No one else for Taxi? Sorry if I missed it, but I love it. I'm really fascinated by anything that captures the decay and despair of 1970s New York, and that title sequence does for me. Taxi was a very good show as it was, but with less Andy Kaufman and no laughtrack, it could've been an all-time great.

Two of these aren't instrumentals, sorry, but look at MTM's murderer's row of theme songs, and for that matter, the shows attached to them:

The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Bob Newhart Show
The White Shadow
WKRP in Cincinnati
Hill Street Blues
St. Elsewhere
Newhart

Love them all.

EDIT: CRAAAAAAAAAAAAP I FORGOT THE ODD COUPLE
