I don't see how one can equate reading items posted at CNN.com with reading a major city newspaper. They serve two different purposes (in large part). Sure CNN does well with international and national stories. Scanning Yahoo headlines - which I do several times a day - is a quick way to keep on top of emerging stories. However, I don't go to them for their thoughts on Quinn, Rizzo, local crime, festivals, restaurant reviews,...,etc. It's the same reason I prefer The Score over ESPN.

I am also a dinosaur who prefers to read an actual newspaper. If I go to on-line news sites I tend to read only the items which interest me based upon the headline. I skip most sections. I would almost never read comics. For me, perusing a conventional paper provides a more complete & satisfying experience.

I agree. It's a completely different experience.

Getting your news off of Twitter is fine.

You pick and choose recommendations and stories by respected journalists from a wide variety of news services

Its like getting to read the Newspaper all star team

I knew the Oreo cookie story yesterday because someone posted an article on Twitter, so I read it.

The argument seems to be these two things.
1) I like reading the newspaper
I can't argue against that. I'm sure people liked radio shows over television too. I'm sure people liked sending letters rather than email. It's mostly because of habit. You are used to doing something, you'll want to continue, and you'll have that option.
2) I like seeing local news
If every newspaper in the whole country went under tomorrow you'd still have local news. There is a demand for it, and someone will monetize it. My guess is that if the Tribune and Sun Times went under there would be something jumping in to fill the void. In my case, it's my cable company. They provide local content free to customers. If you are not a customer, you have to pay.

It's not like local news will ever go away. The demand is always there. The lack of other local news is mostly due to newspapers being strong enough to still deliver it. Some inventive computer programmer is going to make a ton of money filling that hole one day. It's not there yet. Newspapers are still too strong.

Come on, Bryan. It's 140 characters. It's not even enough to do a good Terry Boers impersonation let alone provide real news. And you're asking a lot of the reader. He has to decide if Matt Spiegel is a more valuable source than dan bernstein. A news organization does that for the reader by supplying standards and a stylebook. Twitter gives you Oney Guillen talking about how he wants to jizz on Coppock's wife's face.

No it isnt. Its unlimited. Im not saying I get my news from reading Twitter updates. I get it from links to news sites that are posted on Twitter.

Im an excellent judge of what is news and who is writing what for what purpose.

I dont need a news organization to tell me whats important. Thats actually a pretty silly thing when you think about it.

I mean, its like saying, "Why watch youtube? They arent established like the networks with people paid to determine whats good for television watchers"

Well, sometimes youtube has funnier stuff than network tv....and sometimes a blogger has a better view than an old school journalist who mails it in.

I agree that you need to get important info from valid news sources. I completely disagree that its impossible to do that online.

It's not unlimited. Each post is 140 characters max. Unless you're talking about "Twit-more" or whatever the fuck they call it, which seems to defeat the entire purpose of the medium. We already have websites. I agree that Twitter can drive traffic.

You are. IMU is not. I've seen him post stuff from Palestinian propaganda sites as if it were actual news. Do you think the average guy is more like you or more like him?

That's really not that farfetched, Doug. Plenty of twenty-somethings get their news from Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report which are similar forms.

Well, thats what I mean, of course.

If someone is getting there news off of Twitter updates exclusively that is dumb.

But its an excellent way to find and sort thru stories from all over respected news services on the internet

Honestly, I think its very easy to determine if something is news or opinion disguised as news or some weirdo just typing things.

I would suggest IMU knew what he was posting wasnt news, but he was using as such to strengthen a position

Thats a whole nother argument. Thats one downside to all this information being availabe. Anyone can find anything they want to find and present it as fact and it makes political discussions unreadable.

But if you want to, you can sift thru all that.

Reddit (and digg before that) used to pretty good, kinda twitter-like in having info on news stories before they make the papers/formal news sites. Now it's all cat pics, stupid memes and complaints about other people's imaginary friends.

No, but that stuff generally doesn't interest me, which is probably why I don't visit yahoo sports often. I've heard they are outstanding at college/high school coverage.

Yahoo sports probably has the best NBA coverage around. I'm surprised you're not a big reader of their stuff.

No way. David Thorpe on ESPN Insider.

Edit: For free sites it's pretty impossible to beat Sebastian Pruitti and the Grantland staff in general. I do like some of Yahoo Sports basketball and baseball coverage, but I've never thought of it as the best on the web.

Yahoo always has everything way before ESPN has it. Pay attention tonight with draft night deals. Yahoo will announce things way before ESPN all the time.
