He was 86 years old, and here's a little more on the passing of a TV icon:

A very talented guy, and one of the best sitcoms ever. He did a lot of great stuff other than the Andy Griffith show. If you've never seen A Face In The Crowd, it's worth tracking down.

Andy may have been best known for playing "Sheriff Andy Taylor" on "The Andy Griffith Show" from 1960-1968, as well as Atlanta-based attorney "Ben Matlock" in the legal drama "Matlock" from 1986-1995, but he was more than just an actor. He was also a gospel singer, too.

Andy sang in several episodes of his self-titled sitcom, as well as in 1957's "A Face in the Crowd". He also recorded a collection of classic Christian hymns, including 1996's "I Love To Tell The Story: 25 Timeless Hymns" which was certified platinum by the RIAA. Plus, Andy also appeared in Brad Paisley's 2008 country music video "Waitin' on a Woman".

He and his longtime friend, the late, great Don Knotts, also appeared in 1958's "No Time for Sergeants", 2 years before CBS premiered "The Andy Griffith Show" in 1960. Griffith & Knotts also starred together in the 1986 made-for-TV movie "Return to Mayberry", and Knotts also guest starred in a few eps of Griffith's legal drama "Matlock", too.

I knew he was still alive...and makes me sad to hear this news. Love the Andy Griffith Show.....especially with Barney. Early shows were the best.

One of the best ever. Loved the black and white Andy Griffiths, and the Matlock shows were pretty good too.

These episodes are gold Jerry. The ones without Barney and in color are unwatchable.

I think someone should look into his culpability in the why Don Knotts left the show right around the time Opie hit puberty scandal that got hushed up in hurry. Whole fucking town of Mayberry should be napalmed.

Agreed.

Guys, I know that MeTV's sister channel MeTOO airs reruns of "The Andy Griffith Show" these days. I wouldn't be shocked if Andy gets quite a salute on MeTV Network coast to coast in the next week or two.

Sad day. Charming show w/ a good soul that still holds up in syndication despite it's age (b/w episodes only, of course).

Weird update to the story.....he was buried less than 5 hours after he died. It was planned that way...and at the request of his family. Strange to me.

R.I.P. I was a fan because my grandmother loved anything he was in so I was forced to watch it.

That's how the Muslims role. Always bury the body within 24 hours when possible.

I also thought he had been dead for years.

I've heard of the 24 hour thing. I think several cultures do that. 5 hours does seem to be really quick though.

Yeah, that show really took a shitdive after Barney left. But the classic ones were great.

Yeah 5 hours is quick. I mean, just 5 hours, there could be a chance you're not really dead. Erg.

Knew it was coming, but still pretty sad. B&W Andy Griffith's are some of the best sitcoms ever made, given the timeframe they were made in. Without Barney Fife and Ed Norton, there are no sidekick characters like Cosmo Kramer, Frank Barone, Louie De Palma, Niles Crane, etc.

Still watch the B&W Andy's whenever they are on. Hopefully there will be some on in his honor this weekend.

The first 5 years of "The Andy Griffith Show" in black & white with Andy, a very young Ron(ny) Howard & Don Knotts from 1960-65 are as good as you'll find. WWME 23 MeTV's secondary classic TV channel locally, WMEU 48 MeTOO, ran 11 straight hours of "Andy" yesterday from Noon-11p, with more planned starting at 7p tonight & Friday. I don't have MeTOO on DIRECTV, but those that have it can find it on WCIU's digital channel 26.4 as well as on other cable systems in our area.

I never found the Andy Griffith Show to be that good. Nearly all B&W sitcoms were awful pieces of trash.

I believe the later-period color episodes of Andy Griffin that everyone keeps alluding to were actually a spinoff series called Mayberry RFDC.
