I'm trying to keep it rational, sample size and all, but my Rizzo enthusiasm is starting to get out of control.

The Cubs might have two starters in Rizzo and Castro and a borderline starting catcher in Clevenger when they compete for the division again.

Okay. Set at first for ten years with Votto. Castro is like A-Rod at short. This team is really coming together. Who is Soler like? Dave Parker or better?

Brett Jackson is Mike Trout
Soler is probably more like Eddie Murray
I'd be willing to wager neither would even come close to sniffing Harold Baines's career numbers

Trey McNutt is Tom Glavine

You're just unrealistic. Or you don't understand baseball. I'd bet right now that Soler never has a season as good as the one DeAza is having right now. And Sox fans don't even talk about DeAza.

Bullshit. This is almost getting full blown troll mode for you JORR.

right there in the quote is the word ceiling.

and no one has ever thought Castro was like A Rod.

Why dont you jump all over the people comparing Chris Sale to Randy Johnson?

I really wish you could look at the Cubs and Sox objectively, at least some of the time.

No, Bryan. It's ridiculous. Nobody is comparing Sale to Randy Johnson. That idiot IMU compared him to Erik Bedard and the answer was that Johnson is probably a better comparison. And it is- from his physical build and the way he throws the slider. The difference is that Johnson was far less polished at such a young age. But I don't think any Sox fan anywhere is fantasizing that Sale might have the career Randy Johnson had. It's stupid. Most of us just want him to get through the season.

When these guys say "the ceiling is Votto or the ceiling is A-Rod", they're going to be disappointed if they fall anywhere short of that. I'm not saying that about you. I know you know the game far better than that. If I told most Cub fans that Soler was going to give them six or seven seasons averaging DeAza's numbers that wouldn't be enough for them. The truth is, he's unlikely to ever approach that. And Rizzo is more likely to be Adam LaRoche than Joey Votto. And that's a good player. But it just won't be enough.

I read both papers everyday and I listen to the Score a lot. I haven't read a single article or heard any caller say any such thing.

"oh, I only said his ceiling is this" is whats bullshit. How about some realistic expectations. Last week, IMU was comparing Brett Jackson-- who is 24 and still in the minors-- to Mike Trout-- who is 20 and is a legit MVP candidate in the Majors.

"ceiling"
At this point, a realistic ceiling for Brett Jackson would be Corey Hart.

So I'm interested to hear. If Rizzo's ceiling is Joey Votto, who is his floor? George Brett?

IMU thinks Brett Jackson's "ceiling" is Mike Trout, because they have a similar skill set. (Yeah, they both swing a bat and throw a ball.....)
Based on that, his floor would be......Bernie Williams?

I think most of those comparisons are fucking insane. Just as insane as comparing Sale to Bedard or The Big Unit at this point.

Not going to get involved in another Cubs/Sox debate. No progress has ever been made on the board with one of these.

Back to Rizzo, crazy how much he's changed his approach. Would love to find out who was the most involved with changing his hand position pre-swing etc. Wish a reporter would do an article on that as supposed to generic how does it feel to be a Cub bs

Oh, best case scenario? Rizzo's ceiling is Babe Ruth then. Gordon Beckham's ceiling was Babe Ruth. "Best case scenario, Jay Cutler could turn into Tom Brady."

Be real here, fellas. That's all I'm saying This is MLB not fantasy baseball. Most of the Cubs fans here are not being realistic in terms of expectations of a lot of the Cubs prospects.

No, a ceiling is a realistic high point. I agree on Jackson, althought that might be a little high.

We were talking Rizzo. I dont think hoping he turns out to be a 30 Homer Lefty 1b is going crazy.

28-33 HRs, no I don't think that is crazy at all. Insinuating that Rizzo should put up Votto-esque numbers over a period of years IS crazy.

"panning out" for sure. Expecting them to be serviceable MLB players, maybe a couple of All Stars mixed in is realistic. You can win a lot of games (some in October, I might add) with teams like that.

You seem to have a chunk of them penciled them in with HOF and MVP type numbers. That is not realistic. You have no basis to talk about my perception of reality after you have posted expectations of Cubs 'prospects' that are above and beyond anything baseball has seen in the last 20+ years.

And there we go. Hope that Soler turns into Rickey Henderson...and enjoy the attendance championship. I'll enjoy watching the Sox play meaningful baseball thru September and hopefully thru October.

Here is a perfect example.

Sox fan compares Sale to Johnson and its a specific detail and really they werent comapring him at all.

If a Cub fan typed a name like Johnson in the same thread as a first year pitcher, you would be KILLING them, regardless of the context of the comparison.

IMU has some interesting projections. I dont think you can apply everything he says to all cub fans.

Regarding Soler though, so what? Most fans are not going to be ULTRA REALISTIC about high picks or prospects in any sport.

The Number 1 overall pick is more likely to be Phil Nevin than A Rod, but most fans of all teams are hopeful about prospects.

Joe Orr Road Rod wrote:

Were talking/hoping for best case scenario. Nothing wrong with that. No one is predicting it.

Id say he falls in between the two you listed.

But, I personally think Rizzo could end up being a 30-35 homerun guy. Is that crazy?

This is where you need to be realistic. The most replied to thread in the Cubs section here is "Cubs Minor League prospects". What media members post here?

Votto averages 31 HR and 104 RBI per 162.

Pretty much exactly what you say is "not crazy at all"

As Sale approaches two full years in MLB and his first All Star game I don't think it is pie in the sky to call him a star.

The team is bad. The future is in the minors.

How is that being unrealistic? Seems like that is being all-too-frustratingly realistic.

Im sorry. Ill never apologize for following minor leagues and prospects. I do in every sport. Its the same as liking the NFL Draft or College BB for the purposes of the NBA.

I dont think that proves anything.

As a matter of fact, I think you'd find a pretty pessimisitic tone on most prospects in that thread.

I don't have time to look back at all the threads/posts you have made about Randy Wells. You compared Brett Jackson to Mike Trout just a few days ago, so that nonsense is probably still on this first page. urlacher's missing neck has cheese for brains because he has posted several outlandish things about the Cubs prospects and Theo just as you have.

And in the Rizzo Cubs Debut thread, there is a bunch of HOO HA as well.

It's unrealistic to think that Cub fans don't follow prospects much more closely than most others.

The second most replied to thread is about the NLDS vs. the Dodgers, so it's not just a "they are bad" thing.

I don't see the logic. A general thread about prospects is likely to go on for years.

A thread about a weekend series with the Reds or Braves, what have you, will end. What does this prove?
