There's really nothing hypothetical about how many runs a team actually scores. It's a documented fact. The only opinion being proffered is your "feeling" that Detroit has a better offense than the White Sox. So why are you getting angry, buddy?

You and Terry's Peeps would need your own room too.

Well, it appears that Detroits offense was clearly much better over the last three games at the very minimum.

Ramirez, Danks and Flowers absolutely killed any momentum the Sox had with those at-bats in the 8th... Holy shit were those bad...

This is the day SHARK has been waiting for. "It was fun while it lasted".

I'm still not worried. The Sox will get hot again and everyone will calm down.

I'm not terribly worried, but the bats need to come around soon. Outside of the Friday game at KC, they haven't scored much at all.

It was a tough road trip. 3-7 isn't very good, but they had won or split every series before this trip since early June so they were probably due for a bad week.

Sox fans welcome back to what we call "planet earth." Dont worry. While you have been in another world nothing has changed in your neighborhood. That diner up the street still makes the best grilledcheese this side of midway. You can still go to mcfairys up the block and meet your dad/sister/aunt/45th cousin/mechanic/canaryville ex girlfriend that you thought looked like a kardashian and talk about how its still early. Early. Early. Maybe they can have another "dog days" game to keep the interest up.

 Hootmoon is mad

JORR, Detroit's offense is better. They have better offensive players overall. Regardless of what has happened so far this season.

And yes, run support matters. Maybe a guy is getting Outpitched by the other pitcher because his team's offense is historically bad. That doesnt reflect on the pitcher.

Yes, over years or a career, good pitchers will have more wins than losses, but in the short term that is not always the case. (See Felix Hernandez' Cy Young season)

Why are you focusing on a single outlier? And I never said the Tigers don't have a better offense. What I said was the difference between the two is negligible and will remain so when the season is complete. Just because you look at the players and believe one is- or should be- far superior does not mean that is supported by fact. A numbers guy like you knows that very well.

I'll explain it again. The difference between the vast majority of offenses in a given season is less than a run per game. If a pitcher isn't capable of pitching over that difference consistently, how can he be the great pitcher you think he is? I'll stipulate to a "Felix Hernandez exception" since there are teams that have averaged two runs more per game than his own. That's quite unusual.

a) In the short term, weird things can happen. Sometimes a guy is 6-5 at the all star break and he should be 10-1.

I concede that over a career, the W-L record will normalize and a guys record will show how he was overall.

b) I dont think that the difference is negligible. I think your underselling how much a fraction of a run is over 162 games. It does matter. It seems like you're almost saying All offenses are the same over a long period of time. They are not. Half a run more per game is significant.

I think the Tiger offense is a little better (mainly due to Cabrera and Fielder) and I agree with DS that for a one game scenario, Most people would take the Tigers.

That's exactly the opposite of what I'm saying. Over a season, half a run per game is hugely significant. In a single game it isn't even enough to win by- teams obviously being unable to score a fraction of a run. Pitchers don't face a single team 162 times a season. If they did, I wouldn't use quotations marks around "run support". But a pitcher faces a variety of offenses- some better, some worse than his own. And if he's a top pitcher, it shouldn't be difficult to overcome the fraction of a run difference between the two offenses when his offense is facing a supposedly lesser pitcher.

For example, in 1987 Nolan Ryan led the NL in ERA. But he started 34 games and in 26 of them the pitcher(s) he faced outperformed him. How could that possibly be good? Nobody is that unlucky.

Ok, well I think inside a month or half season or season weird things can happen.

I agree with your larger point but only over a career.

Maybe Ryan matched up against Carlton 15 times that year.

Looking it up, in July of 87 Ryan pitched 5 games. He didnt allow more than 2 ER's in any start and he was 0-5

He also lost his last 4 that year even though the Innings/ER for those starts were
9/1
6/3
7/4
7/1

I fuckin hate Nolan ryan

He didn't. I'm sure you won't find it surprising that I know that season of his intimately and have broken down all the game logs for precisely this same discussion in the past. He faced a whole lot of common guys that year. They had great ERAs in the same games he did.
