Today is a special day for Ron Santo fans. He finally gets the honor he so richly deserved by getting inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. As Ron Santo is probably saying in heaven I wish it wasn't posthumorlessly. Elliott Harris and I pay tribute to Ron the player, Ron the broadcaster, and Ron the man with former teammates Billy Williams, Milt Pappas, Glenn Beckert, Don Kessinger, and Fergie Jenkins. http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_edit?n ... ix3EkBCj-E

The Hall of Fame is like T-Ball now. Everyone gets a trophy.

If it takes you a long time to get into the hall of fame you probably don't belong.

IF you don't think Santo belongs in the Hall you don't know a thing about baseball. Or you listen to B&B who have a personal hate of him because Santo didn't kiss up to Terry at Mike Murphy's wedding.

The man got 4% in his initial year of eligibility. He was removed from the ballot.

Epic irony, considering the source.

Ron Santo was a terriffic player. He was never my favorite player as a youngster. Fergie Jenkins and Billy Williams were my favorites. But I liked Santo and thought he was perhaps the best 3rd baseman in the game for a few years. Brooks was at least as good defensively. But Ron was a better hitter. He didn't have Mike Schmidt numbers, but they surely were outstanding enough to merit induction. For the idiot that says "it's like T-ball, everyone gets a trophy"....you are obviously someone who either knows nothing about Baseball or just dislikes Ron santo. There have now been a total of 12 -3rd Basemen in Baseball history to gain induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. there are just over 200 total members in the Hall. Santo got in because he deserved to get in. He also deserved to enjoy the day of his induction while he was alive. However, that was one priviledge he was denied.

Probably. But he also must have been a world class jagoff at some point when he played because getting inducted the year after he died is about the biggest slap in the face he could have been given.

Never said he was a great guy. I have heard things that support the idea he was not very nice at times. But Ty Cobb wasn't a nice guy and yet he was inducted without delay. There are probably dozens of jagoffs in the HOF. But it is supposed to be how a guy played the game that decides if he is elected, not his personality. But if they are going to look at a guy's personality, why not look at it in whole? How about all the millions of dollars he raised to fight juvenile diabetes? How about all the kids he visited and wrote to, that suffered with diabetes? He might have rubbed some people the wrong way, but he surely had redeeming qualities as well. For those that kept him out of the Hall until he died, I wonder how pleasant they might be if they were in Santo's place.....suffering with diabetes, until eventually losing each leg before his death. I wonder how pleasant they might be under similar circumstances?

Maybe he should've taken care of himself. He would've retained his legs.

Ty Cobb is one of the single greatest players to ever play the game, if not the greatest. Ron Santo is not in that discussion.

Santo battled diabeetus? Interesting. I never heard the story. He was certainly brave for suffering in silence and never using his illness to garner sympathy in his quest to get in the hall.

I would like to point out, that Santo's career numbers make Joe Morgan look like he doesn't belong in the HOF.

I agree about Cobb. If you hit .367 in your CAREER, you are exceptional. How many years did he hit over .400 3? 4? That said, is it your opinion then, that one can be a jagoff if you are great enough and still get elected? But another guy thats good enough to merit induction, but not truely the best of the best, be denied induction because he's not well liked? Barry Bonds was surely disliked and by all accounts deserving of the disdain. I wonder if his PED inflated stats will be considered great enough to overcome that disdain?

Not at all. I have no problem with Santo being a Hall of Famer.

Just pointing out that he needed special help to get in. Twice.

That Santo didn't get in sooner is just indication that the system was broken and that dumb old jocks have dumb old grudges. Statistically, there's no argument that he was one of the best third basemen ever. Deriving joy from the fact that he had to get in through the side door is so dumb, ergo, so White Sox-y. Life is all about using side doors. Ugh, here we must go again. Sox fans are the worst.

Who is taking joy? Peeps was simply stating facts. Being an asshole notwithstanding, Joe Morgan played in some postseason games.

What is 'dumb' is painting all Sox fans with a broad brush, as you have done twice already in this thread.

Deriving no joy from anything. Always thought he was borderline HOF.

Why do you care what anyone else thinks?

That's probably right. So were Doug Rader and Ken Boyer. They aren't Hall of Famers either.
