I've never had the impression that they were a particularly passionate fan base. Everything about Atlanta, basically in all sports, feels 'meh' like the fans could take it or leave it

The worst thing about Atlanta is the stadium placement. If it were in the norther suburbs they would be sold out every night.

Atlanta itself has too many people who aren't from Atlanta. There are Braves fans throughout the whole southeast, but it's hard to get to Turner Field and back when you're from Alabama or South Carolina.

Does anyone else think that this Garza "triceps injury" is perhaps a smokescreen by Cubs brass to quell a public uprising that they didn't cash him out for prospects when he's got next year left on his contract?

Matt Garza (2012): 18g 18gs 5w 7l 0sv 0bsv 0hld 0cg 0sho 103.2ip 90h 48r 45er 15hr 32bb 96k 3.91era 1.18whip .236baa

Maybe they hope that he'll have an ERA in the low-mid 3s and his value will then go up as he'd be one of the most sought after arms in a pennant race if he "got it together?" Or maybe they're ever so subtly buying this recent 12-4 run before their Cardinal beatdown as signs that they could be next year's 2011 Diamondbacks and shock the world and Garza could end up being their ace?

Either way, it seems a bit funny that Garza suddenly has this weird non-DL injury right b4 the trade deadline and writers are tossing out the phrase "cubbie occurrence" while Matt is "dude"ing it up and doing a pretty emphatic aw shucks routine. The truth is clearly above my paygrade.

Now I'm going to go to the bar and talk to some women.

No matter why Dempster holds up a trade it doesn't matter. It's his right & if conditions aren't to his liking, why say yes?

Why does Dempster have a accept anything? We're so quick to attack players for not doing whatever the team wants them to do. He doesn't have to help the Cubs out by approving a trade. He negotiated the right to reject or accept a deal.

The problem I have is that Atlanta was on his list (according to reports). If he told them he would go there then fucking go and quit bitching.

It was negotiated into the CBA. It doesn't change anything. He has the right to approve or reject anything.

Obviously it wasn't the simple or he would be there already.

Exactly. It's kind of like Lebron. Dude played out not one, but two contracts for the hapless Cavaliers. Fulfilled all contractual obligations. And was then perfectly in the right to leave and take his talents to South Beach.

He did have that right.

Most people didn't have an issue with him going to Miami, it was the way in which he did it.

He has the right. No one is taking it from him. We (well those sucker Cubs fans) have the right to grumble about it.

When things are negotiated they are done to give you leverage. Pretty easy to understand. At this time Dempster has the leverage. It's not everyday that a team can't just do whatever they want with Player X. When did you hear Dempster say which teams he would and wouldn't go to?

For the life of me I've never been able to truly understand why fans side with management the overwhelming majority of the time when it comes to issues with players.

A bigger issue here is that the Cubs organization needs to stop creating an environment where players would rather play out the string on a god awful shitty team instead of wanting to leave to compete for a title. Losing should suck. Knowing you will finish in last or 2nd to last place should suck.

Straw man a plenty in this thread. Where are all the angry Cubs fans?

No one is begrudging or not respecting Dempster's 10/5 rights. It's been reported for a long time that he wanted to go to the Dodgers or Braves. He obviously has heard trade rumors. If he feels slightly disrespected because the news broke on Twitter, I suppose that's understandable, but if that's what truly stops a trade from happening to a team he pre-approved, then fans have a right to think less of him.

Obviously, the 'facts' are unconfirmed, but just widely reported about his approved teams etc.

He got on his twitter account today and said this

Quote:
Nothing official to report. You will be the 1st to know. Thnx to all my fans for the support

That tells me he has calmed himself and this will be finalized shortly.

Well they usually love the city and the fans. I can't say I blame them for that. As a player it has to feel good playing for a team whose fans will support you to the max if you give your all and play well. The Cubs should be selling that to free agents in 2014.

We don't know if he really wanted to go to the Braves or if the Braves are requesting that he sign an extension as a condition of the trade.

Dempster better be gone before his next start at Wrigley. It could be ugly and he could fast become Cublic enemy #1 !!

From mlbtraderumors:

TUESDAY, 9:05am: Dempster has given preliminary indications that he'd accept a trade to the Braves, ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports (Twitter links). However, Dempster felt blindsided when news of the proposed deal leaked before the Cubs reached him.

I care way more about the future of the Cubs than I do the future or present of Ryan Dempster.

I dont usually side with management but there is no reason for me to care about Dempster here.

It might be different, if he had won something for my team

Isnt that true anywhere?

Or are you just talking attendance?

If they supported anyone who played hard, that would be something to sell. You play well anywhere and fans will love you

Rosenthal reporting he's holding out for a trade to the Dodgers. Fuck me. There goes getting anything of value for him if true.

That in no way affects Dempster holding out for a trade there.

Guys, I thought that deal fell through over the weekend and that the Dodgers were more interested in Garza instead of Dempster.
