Completely agree. That's with me just getting a chance to see him play in the mid to late 80's.

That's not true at all. Right away I conceded to JORR that Sikma was probably better than I thought, then I asked those who saw him daily about different aspects of his game. Most of what I've seen from him comes from the 1978-1979 playoffs. I realize he peaked as a scorer and overall player a few years later. I'm never gonna know as much about Sikma as a guy who watched him daily, and I've always acknowledged that. But I do think I have a reasonably good understanding of how he played, and more importantly, the differences between the league 35 years ago and today. To say that he's significantly better than a guy like Horford or Chandler just doesn't make sense. There's no case to be made. I haven't heard one here yet.

He was a stud while playing against some of the greatest centers of all time. He was fairly dominant in arguably the best era for centers. I love Chandler (Horford doesn't really do it for me) and overall Chandler isn't half the player Sikma was.

I've never heard him described as dominant, or close to it. His numbers dont suggest he was either Agree to disagree on Chandler and the importance of defense.

Defense is important. Mark Eaton was also a good defender but he wasn't the player that Sikma was.

I was a huge fan of Chandler's when it wasn't popular to be a huge fan. I saw the potential in him. Many laughed at me on here for making the argument that Chandler would be better than Wallace going forward when the Bulls signed him. I still haven't gotten any apologies for all the teasing I got for making the case for Chandler.

I wouldn't call Sikma "dominant", but he was a damn good player who played in a time when centers were particularly strong, as you pointed out. To illustrate that, Eaton and Hibbert are similar guys. Hibbert is one of the better centers of his time. No one would say that about Eaton.

Have you seen much of Horford or Hibbert? Hibbert is not in his prime yet so keep that in mind. He's already better scorer, passer, and rebounder than Eaton ever was even in his prime. And Hibbert has played four seasons, one not even being full. Besides maybe their height and build that's a terrible comparison.

Theyre really both just defenders, shot blockers. Maybe you think Hibbert's offensive game will develop. Maybe it will. Right now Eaton is a good comparison.

Right but even if Hibbert doesn't improve offensively(unlikely, but not improbable) he's still competent on that end, and took a major step forward this year. If Eaton is on your team it's like Asik, you are playing 4 on 5 on one end of the court. With Hibbert you're always playing 5 on 5. I'm not sure who would be comparable to Eaton, but it isn't Hibbert. It Asik develops a little more polish maybe it's him.

Chandler is either better or significantly better at everything a center does than Eaton was. The sabr crowd would tell you they aren't even close.

Edit: except blocks obviously.

Yeah, Hibbert is a better offensive player than Eaton. But Eaton wasnt asked for offense. The different era stuff cuts both ways. Maybe Eaton would score more if he were facing the guys Hibbert does.

BR says Theo Ratliff and Dalembert are your comparables for Mark Eaton. So there ya go.

If you are looking for a shot blocking, rebounding center, who doesnt really matter on offense, Tyson Chandler is your guy

Eaton really never showed signs of it. Hibbert at least did in college. Eaton is one of the best shot blockers ever but he was generally pretty useless at everything else. It makes sense that Ratliff, Dalembert, and Brendon Haywood are considered his contemporaries.

You're gonna laugh at this, but I don't care. The adjusted pace of play stats say Chandler was comparable to Thurmond. Thurmond was better I think, but that's a closer comparison than Eaton.

Yes, if you are willing to pay DPOY-caliber money. If not you can save a ton of money and go with Dalembert, the Evolutionary Eaton.
