The man who starred as "George Jefferson" from 1975-1985 on "The Jeffersons" & "Deacon Frye" on the late '80s sitcom "Amen", actor Sherman Hemsley, has passed away. Still developing, but he was 74 when he died at his home in El Paso, TX.

I'm wondering why the hell he would live in El Paso?

Once they took that Paterno statue down, it was more than Hemsley could take.

That's also where Sherman's TV wife, actress Isabel Sanford, a.k.a. "Weezie Jefferson", can be found these days. :(

I loved Amen. Despite all the characters being hateable. Kinda weird.

Yeah, there wasn't one likeable character on that show. Yet it worked. I wonder how Rolly is doing these days. He's got to be pushing 120...130.

I may have been overstating it a bit, but I'd rather watch an Amen rerun than a Jeffersons...

Hard to believe, but "Amen" was the sitcom where we learned that co-star Clifton Davis was a minister in real life, in addition to his role on the show.

There's a channel called GMC, not the truck brand from General Motors, that airs "Amen" reruns all the time. That can be found on DIRECTV 338. As for "The Jeffersons", I think MeTV's secondary classic TV channel MeTOO airs reruns of that, along with TVOne, DIRECTV 328, as well as Nick at Nite's TV Land. You know MeTV bosses might plan some sort of marathon in homage of Hemsley.

TMZ.com has updated the story regarding Sherman Hemsley, albeit vaguely. They're now reporting Sherman died of natural causes, but wouldn't go any further at this time.

Unfortunately, "Rolly", actor Jester Hairston, is no longer with us. He died of natural causes in 2000.

My first thought was about Darkside. :P

My second thought was "Really?? El Paso?!?".
Y'all know how bad I want to go back to Texas, but I'd live in Buffalo before I'd live in El Paso!!

I was impressed at an early age that he switched from high fiving the kids to the straight handshake for the adults

Age appropriate greetings

That's an awful lot of actors from the same show dying of "natural" causes, don't you think?

While we best know Sherman Hemsley for his work as "George Jefferson" on "The Jeffersons" & "Deacon Frye" on "Amen", I bet you don't remember Sherman also loaned his voice for the ABC live-action puppet series "Dinosaurs" in the early '90s.

I'm going to start a blog about the "Amen Curse". Good catch...

Gotta disagree there. Thelma was whiny, and not really much to look at.

SHARK isn't making this up. There was an actual TV series called "Dinosaurs" in the '90s.
