You can now fair catch an onside kick in college. Even if it hits the ground first. There will be no more late game comebacks if down two scores.

Are any of you guys aware of the high school coach in Arkansas who never punts and on-side kicks every time? He takes a SABRmetric type approach to football and I believe has has written a book compiling statistics and likely outcomes in given situations. Anyway, his teams rarely lose.

Always helps to have bigger faster guys.

It is more common than you think at the high school level. Especially the onside every time.

We onside kicked every kickoff one year after week two. Our kicker was bad and every kickoff was virtually returned to midfield anyways.

Richards made it all the way to a state title game in the late 80s without punting.

There's a school of thought that punting should be much rarer than it is at all levels. But the way the game is approached isn't likely to change any time soon. Guys are taught how to play by other guys who were taught the same thing. You can see that baseball managers can't get over the infatuation with the sacrifice bunt in spite of mountains of evidence that it is a poor strategy except in very rare and specific situations.

If punting were a new rule invented today, coaches would probably do it a quarter of the time they currently do. Simple inertia.

As for the onside kick, I don't particularly like it, and I like the "strategy" of lining a team ten yards away and wiping out defenseless players even less. Some coach--Greg Schiano maybe--mentioned off the cuff an idea where you give a team an option to do a fourth-and-25 as their kickoff if they so chose. That strikes me as better than the onside kick in every respect.

This sounds exactly how my 7 year old plays the NCAA 2012 video game. Maybe he's smarter than I give him credit.

Coaches (at least college and professional coaches) will never stop punting even if there's statisitcal evidence out there to support not doing it. Higher level coaches will have to take the blame when going for it on 4th down and having it fail. They would rather the team lose the game than having a moment somewhere in the game where a 4th down conversion failure be what people are talking about.

I would never punt if I was on 4th down and less than 5 yards, unless I was inside my own 20. Coaches that punt when they are less than 50 yards from the end zone should be punched in the sack.

I've seen that. I think it was on Real Time Sports.

Sounds like Hal Mumme from Kentucky and New Mexico State. His teams never won anything.
