Okay guys and gals.

The 2012 Poopfest Known as the Cubs

Better, worse or about what you expected?

They are worse than I expected. I thought they'd win about 65-70 games. Now I think the CFSMB all stars could win a 3 game series with them.

Worse.

I expected them to be the wild card team.

This is a serious question, not Theo-bashing or Cub-bashing. I know Theo is supposed to be the man that will build an organization for "sustained success". That being the case, how can his previous organization be in shambles a mere half season after he left?

I think in Boston, he was encouraged to spend money to supplement whatever the team lacked through free agency to ensure the club had a chance to win every season. Here, he is not close enough to bother spending on free agents, so he is building from the farm system on up. He missed on guys like Carl crawford and Bobby Jenks and through no fault of his, there are many players that have regressed on that team in 2012. Beckett and Lester are awful and perhaps due to Valentine, there is just poor chemistry there this season.

To get back to the topic of this thread....the team is right about where I envisioned it would be. They need to start Volstad more, to ensure the overall #1 pick in next June's draft though. Right now, they have a decent chance to win whenever Sammy takes the hill. Otherwise......not so much.

They are 3 games under .500 and I dont think talent is the problem there.

Middlebrooks looks like another good player coming thru the system

The Red Sox remind me of the 2011 White Sox- a lot of veterans playing below their normal performance. Plus that division is brutal.

But doesn't that illustrate just how precarious and unpredictable baseball is? I guess what I'm trying to get my head around is the cost/benefit of purposely tanking for several years.

What is several? 2?

You have to take into considerations the contracts.

I mean, you cant just try to win next year and keep kicking the "have a good organization" can down the road

The wins will be right around where most people predicted...65-70 .... and Vitters n Jackson should have been playing all year..I know they suck but who cares..either way the team is going to suck, may as well draft first... Theo has been decent ..some good some bad.

The Cubs should have approximately $40 million available to spend on free agents in the offseason. With the Cubs drawing nearly 3 million in attendance and some of the highest prices in baseball, the Cubs payroll should be near $100 million next year.

The Cubs are not the Pirates or Royals, they have money to spend, they should spend it. It's not like the Cubs are going to use that $40 million on the farm system.

And spending money on free agents and building a farm system are not mutually exclusive. The Angels, Cardinals, Red Sox and Yankess all have large payrolls, yet they continue to develop young, dynamic players.

The Cubs could sign 2 Maholm type starting pitchers in the offseason, giving you a solid front four along with Garza and Samardzija. Add a couple bats, lets say in right field or third base (not really impressed with Vitters at this point) and the lineup is respectable.

Sign a few free agents and who knows, get off to a good start and a projected 77-80 win team could be in the 87-90 win range.

And you can still develop Baez, Soler, etc.

And if things don't go right, flip some the free agents you have signed for prospects like the cubs did for Maholm this year.

I do not expect a 100 loss team next year, even a 90 loss team would be dissapointing. Not with a $100 million payroll.

I guessed they would be 73-89, so they are on a pace to be quite a bit worse than that.

edit; before anybody jumps all over me, the Cubs would have to go 28-19 from here on out to get to 73 wins. Not very likely.

You've got to stick with these kids in the majors for more than a couple weeks. 99% of prospects suck at the beginning. The best players are the ones that adapt and improve...

Not giving up on on Vitters, I want to see Vitters get as many at bats as possible before the season ends, but so far in the bats I have seen, not one hard hit ball. Vitters has the same problem most Cub prospects seem to have, not much patience or pitch selection....lets swing at anything close.

If Vitters shows some promise, great, then pour more money into pitching next year.

Vitters has come as advertised. Lots of weak grounders and lazy fly balls. I haven't seen him barrell a ball up yet. He's not taking any walks but he is striking out a bit and he hasn't exactly faced the cream of the NL pitching crop. No harm in continuing to play him but not a lot there to get excited about.

Uncle KS, please stop.

I understand that I have no room to talk, what with the long-running OKC/Terry's Peeps saga that has been going on for most of this year. But I allow myself the right to be hypocritical in this case.

.....fuck. It goes on and on Kid.

I don't try to program peoples' posts, but if I think someone or something sucks, do I not have the right to say so? Isn't that what the supposed "good ole days" on this board were all about?

And the Midget deal is completely different and you know it.

Good thing you are not the GM. You don't spend big money on free agents until they are close enough to contend and just need a couple pieces to complete the puzzle. That only serves to get them mediorce draft picks, rather than top ones. No, they should stay the course and draft, trade for and develop young talent. "If things don't go righy, flip some of the free agents you signed"....are you 11 years old??? Teams don't want guys that don't pan out. They couldn't give Soriano away 2 years ago or last season. This year, because things are going well with Soriano, they could have moved him to the Giants at the deadline, had Soriano not rejected the move. They moved Maholm because he was a good signing. He came at a good price and performed. So if the Cubs sign several free agents and things don't go well, then you would have them trade all the guys who were doing a good job (teams would want) and be stuck with the sludge nobody would want. Or perhaps you would find a way to trade them, with the Cubs picking up 90% of their salary?? Baseball idiocy. No, the Cubs are doing the right thing and should stay the course. Sure it's awful to bear witness to the current mess, but it's a process. Once they get close (about 2 years) they will seriously look at what they lack and what free agents might be available to fill those needs. To fill any now and block the path of a player developing in the system that might be capable of filling that need in a year or two, would be stupid.

Great comment about prospects sucking at first.

A lot more players don't find their feet until their 2nd year or so in the bigs. The list of guys who took awhile to get going is 10 times as long as the guys who were stars from day 1.

$142 million for Carl Crawford, and $82.5 million for John Lackey.

I'd rather talk about that off the board. I wish I'd known you were at Purdue Cal yesterday. We could've had lunch. I was working from home and I'm only about 20 minutes away. Oh well...next time Gadget.

Hammond has a uniqueness to it that can be expressed with smilies:

  :!: :( :eye:

Things that happened in Hammond during the two days I was there.

Someone jumping in front of my truck while leaving Popeyes Chicken. Asking me where I was going and could I give her a ride 10 miles in the opposite direction. When I said I only had 10 minutes remaining for lunch and needed to get back, she was angry as fuck and called me a "dead ass motherfucker".

While gassing up said truck at a local filling station, someone pulled up behind me and asked if they could "borrow" a half a tank of gas. I said I don't carry cash. They asked if I could just run my credit card in the pump for them, they'd take my address and send me a check in two weeks, on payday. I said alls I have is my company gas card. This did not deter him.

I met a few white people in my life. Never seen one that couldn't afford some Marlboros.
