If anywhere close the 7 years at $60 million and this is an awesome deal for Theo and company. "Hey 23 year old 2 time all-star who just had his first long slump and hangs w a guy making Romney money....how bout a long term deal". Only increases trade value if Baez or others continue path.

I don't think Cub fans would hate Soriano if he only made less than $9M/year during his tenure here. I don't like Castro that much, from what I know, but this seems like a great contract without much downside.

He will never have the power numbers Soriano had..unless he is using PED's.. If I am Castros agent I tell him 3-4 year deal..no longer.

Castro will be a career 300 plus hitter..take more walks in the future and get that obp up..he should also be a 15-20 hr a year player..and his defense is better now then sorianos ever was...If soriano was making 8 or 9 million a year nobody would criticize him..that goes for any sport when a guy is stealing money.

Castro is also younger than all the prospect call ups from this year just to put this into perspective. He has pissed me off to no end this year with his general approach at the plate and his lack of concentration in the field and on the basepaths.....but there is so much time to fix these things. He needs a good role model though to remove all of the Aram influence.

Soriano is a terrible influence on Castro...this club since he came up has been a fucking embarrassment with Lou and Quade.

Aram is light years worse than Soriano. Soriano is a chill and low key guy but he puts in an effort to try and get better. Aram was a piece of shit. He was all about Aram and Aram's power stats and Aram's money. I hope they grab a recently retired omar vizquel as the infield coach or someone that Castro will respect and was a very good latin player in his time.

Fuck Soriano, he is a fucking butcher and would rather stay here on a loser then relocate to a better team..he swings at garbage and has Castro out clubbing with his over paid ass..Aram produced ..4 or 5 years he knocked in 100 and was average with his defense and paid accordingly.

Seems like a good deal. I mean how much will 9-10 million be in 2017?

I wasnt sure if Theo liked Starlin. Guess so.

But really Moneyball wasnt so much about OBP as it was finding value in the market. Castro is valuable.

I think.

Epstein is no dummy, he knows if Castro makes small improvements yearly he will underpaid on that deal, maybe even as soon as next season or 2 years in.

We still don't really know if he likes him or not. This contract would be very trade friendly down the road as well.

Really? It's a great deal for the Cubs from what I can tell but in no way does it represent the idea that Theo likes Starlin. It's the NBA equivalent of the Rondo deal, except Rondo's deal is even more team friendly. And rondo has been rumored in trades since the week he signed the deal.

This is an awesome deal for the Cubs.

Although you could ask - if Cubs are giving Castro ~$9MM for next 7 years, why didn't they go harder after Cespedes, who Oakland is giving $9MM per for 4 years.

Yeah, I guess the deal itself doesnt mean Theo loves Castro.

I think he does though. I mean as much as people like to point out that he's not a high obp Theo kind of player, he's a great hitting SS. That's the kind of player everyone loves.

I think the jury is still out on whether he's a shortstop.

Well, right now he is.

He is arbitration eligible over the next three years. There is not much chance he'd be seeing 8+ million during his arbitration years. Castro exchanges a possible big payday in his first year of FA for a good money up front and stability.

I said a couple of months ago that the danger in conceeding seasons under Epstien's plan was that good players like Castro and Rizzo would be infected with a losing mentality. I think Castro is already bordering on this.

I have this suspicion that Theo signed Castro to this deal specifically to trade him.

He found out something during trade deadline talks and he's making him more valuable by attaching such a long affordable contract

Is that crazy? There might even be a rule about trading a free agent in his first year.

I don't think its crazy. If he sticks around and the Cubs are paying at or under market value for a guy like Castro, its a good deal. If Castro ends up getting traded to bring in another superstar or a bunch of other prospects, it could still be a good deal.

Seems like its a pretty solid deal from the Cubs POV all the way around.
