No. All those businesses should move to where there are no natural disasters, like Maine.

I remember the national unveiling of Bobby Jindal like it was yesterday.

Two things:

1) I will refrain from making fun of a place that practices voodoo as a wide-spread religion.

2) People who live in Tornado Alley probably shouldn't throw stones.

Where is Tornado alley?

Chicago and its surrounding area is probably the safest major city regarding natural disasters

Still not over Chicago.

Let's not pretend Chicago is a place where Tornados are frequent.

Last one to hit the City was 50 years ago, last one to approach downtown was in 1876

You forgot the best part of Nort's rant. He said the tall buildings cause the tornado to, and I quote verbatim, "dissipate itself".

Some may consider it a "shithole" or an "armpit", that's their choice, such as it is. :thumright:

The difference between some around here (and others), is that some don't feel the need to burn someone else's home down to feel better about their own....and some of you do.

Congratulations.

How much different is this from the people who move next to the Mississippi, then cry for federal assistance each year when their property floods?

When you live in a hole (literally, not figuratively) next to the ocean, shit's gonna happen!

How many of the people who fled NO after Katrina have moved back there?

This is why I always say "Fuck New York" regarding 9/11. (Hey, you're gonna live in a big city near the ocean, you are going to be targeted for terrorism, deal with it.)

That reasoning is a little out there...planes don't fly into buildings 4-26 times a year.

The thing of it is that New Orleans wasn't literally next to the ocean....until Big Oil, corrupt LA politicians & the Federal Gov't cut channels through the thousands of sq. miles of marshlands. Those same marshlands that formerly provided a natural buffer (such as it was) against hurricanes were sacrificed in the name of oil/gas pipelines & other channels....that profited the much more politically astute state of Texas. Those marshlands are now largely gone, washed into the Gulf. Take a look at satellite photos of the LA coast from say 1970 and compare it to today, it's shocking. Almost along the lines of the polar ice caps of then and now. In the name of progress. Or...commerce.

Or,

If this country had say the forethought of the Netherlands (another area largely below sea level) and built a legitimate levee/floodgate system, there wouldn't be a LA "problem" such as it is. But, that would entail a (God forbid) infrastructure program that would disproportionately benefit the wrong kind (non-political donating  ) of people. But nevertheless would have saved tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars.

How many people returned? Hundreds of thousands. Why? It's their home, a home some of us find special in ways others can't appreciate....but one that outsiders who consider it to be an armpit they still spend billions attempting to revel in (or copying its) art, music, writing, food, etc..

And finally, if you "live in a hole" stuff's going to happen. It's just sad that the worst stuff happened when levees were intentionally blown up (1927) or failed due to the human neglect, ineptitude and greed that compromised any levee "system" built in the 50-60 years before 2005. Each time "shit" happened it was as a result of human self dealing, theft and/or fraud.
