I think Bernstein is one of the funniest guys I ever listened to.
He just needs to stop playing this role of a all-knowing,anal retentive,elitist,sniveling little manbitch.

I don't think Bernstein has changed...but the number of guests willing to appear on the show has dropped over the years.

B&B have always cracked me up. The last 3 or 4 years have been rough though with Bernsies attitude.

Here's what I find odd about Bernstein, or at least how he comes across to me.

I usually like the uncomfortable mean radio but with him it goes a little too far. Kinda like watching a kid get picked on in high school. At some point, its enough, but some people dont stop.

Like, when he is clearly baiting them and gets them to call in and just kinda laughs at em, it works. When he gets angry and tries to flex his intellect against "Bob on a car phone" it loses its humor.

He has funny moments but his comedic timing is always a tic off. He frequently struggles to get to the joke. But thats just the one liner. He's good at directing the show down a comedy lane, if you will (and you shall)


My thought on the War is that Bernstein COULD win, but he wouldnt. He would end up not caring. Mac cares about this type of thing. Bernstein cant. The minute he does, he loses, because his whole persona is shattered.

Like most elitists, Berns suffers from a lack of self-awareness, plain and simple.

Do you mean just sports radio? If so, I'd agree.

But if it's on radio period, there's a lot of ground for him to cover before he's even thought of as one of the funniest guys ever .... Stern is king, Brandmeier, Lujack, Kev Matthews, Dahl/Meier, Fred Winston, etc.

Dan can be a fun listen when he lets his guard down. He comes at things from a different angle and usually has support for his arguments so that they create more than just opinion radio. He recognizes much of the bullshit that has long been held as truth that is present in sports. He is (occasionally) iconoclastic and is not intimidated to take on big subject matter.

Bernstein is smart and actually watches sports. Mac is a lazy oaf.

Bernstein's smart, at least by sports-media standards (not exactly a high bar to hurdle, but still) and offers opinions and viewpoints that, for better or for worse, a lot of radio people don't. When he gets in a goofy mood he can be very funny. I think McNeil is smart too, but his show brands itself as a more standard chattin'-with-the-guy-on-the-next-barstool type of sports radio. I've always thought of B&B as the interesting show that pisses you off and McNeil as the really enjoyable listen that generally doesn't provide you with a new perspective.

The problem for Bernstein is that stridency and inconsistency don't mix. You can't use Fangraphs to bludgeon smallball fans if you're going to spend the better part of a decade carrying water for Ozzie Guillen. You can't perform sentence-by-sentence fiskings of Telander editorials if you're going to pimp a dolt like Hub Arkush as some sort of NFL guru. You can't scornfully imply that blue-collar sports fans are a gaggle of racist wife-beating homophobes if you're going to give Joe Cowley a bro-hug when he basically says that a woman is the useless flap of skin around the vagina. And you most definitely can't be the thinking fan's show if you refuse to brook even minor disagreement, to the degree that you gleefully block people who possess the temerity to demand less self-righteous fury about central Pennsylvania child rape. There have been times when I thought Bernstein was the best sports radio host in the country, but in the last year and a half he's edged dangerously close to becoming a more articulate Mike Francesa, and (particularly given the fact that there's a breezy alternative from 9-1) that kind of radio just isn't appealing.

I'll add that I think a lot of these problems can be solved by giving Bernstein a new partner. I love Terry, but he's completely checked out at this point and has basically left Dan free to sit around and sniff his own farts for months at a time. A strong partner who could challenge him (read: Mac) would be terrific radio.

He's a talented talk show host who is extremely negative about most topics (imagine that, a negative talk show host). With the concussion and Penn St. talk, he seems to be more interested in talking about off the field stories than anything on the field as well, probably an attempt to diversify himself.

He is the sports radio enforcer of ideas and attitudes originating in a ruling class that would never take him seriously. He is elitist but not elite. He is an errand boy for grocery clerks.

And I very much dislike Telander.

Telander thinks that he's smart. His columns, when I used to read them, bored me.

Smarter than Hub though

Hub's problem is that he's smug. He thinks he's smarter than the room and often makes statements (that are opinions) that turn out to be completely wrong.

He's like Telander in that way.

They're both horrible.

Hub is awesome.

Oh, okay. Well I certainly don't claim to know a lot about football, so when I listen to Hub, my ears tell me that the guy knows what he's talking about. Maybe I'm wrong.
