there oughta be a proper moffat who drinking game.... we could try it tonight. you drink varying amounts of alcohol if...

- the sonic screwdriver is used as a weapon (again)
- maudlin forced emo-crap with the ponds
- ominous clues to the 5-episode-or-longer story arc (seriously, i guessed doctor WHOOOO?!?!?!?! when my brother was razzing me that i'd get the answer to THE question at the end of 6/13. i retorted 'the question is prolly something mindblowingly stupid like doctor WHO?!?!?!?!?! and my brother managed to keep a straight face. i applaud him for that)
- some attempt to coin a new phrase in the british pop culture lexicon, like jay mariotti did 'the blizzard of oz" and moffat has done with "wibbly wobbly timey wimey" "fish fingers and custard" and god knows what else i'm forgetting.
- the tried and true moffat who institution of making everyday objects/occurences scary.... 'you know for kids" - the hudsucker proxy (see the dark, statues, and weird pseudo-gray aliens with penises for fingers)

and of course, you kill your fifth/liter when you realize that matt smith could prolly be pretty good with much better writing.

it's amazing to me that even tho i got into the show circa 2008/09, i'm already amongst the ranks of jaded old fans who much prefer the old cheesy british stage play that was the classic series. http://beasthouse-lm2.blogspot.com is one of those things you can't unread once you read, and once you realize how wonderland works..... yeah... lawrence has some really good points. also @history365 on twitter is awesome. that is all.

i'll be sure to have some incredulous thoughts of a wanton madman after this airs.

So, aside of "Doctor.... Who?!?", what else would you have proffered as a theme for the 50th, that could be used to bring the previous doctors together? Kidnap Susan? For all I know, she's in the time vortex with the rest of Gallifrey. And face it, who of the current demographic know Susan? (You might have asked the same of Sarah Jane, or Jo Grant, or Zoe)

So any critiques? The Doctor Who? thing, where no one knew who he was struck me as a little cute.

The Dalek-in-a-person was interesting. The new companion hanging inside the Dalek was interesting (yeah, I sussed that she was inside a Dalek almost immediately; her actually being a Dalek was a surprise.)

So does Amy become a Dalek?

Pretty sick of Amy, the sooner she leaves the better. I though it was fairly average and as a season opener I'd even say below average. You can't just put Daleks in an episode and expect it to be good, seems kinda lazy.

I liked it.

The new companion was a nice treat. It'll be interesting to see how she's reintroduced later on.

The Daleks asked the question that precedes the Silence falling according to Dorium.

While it was cool to see a few Daleks I recognized (and I'm sure a ton more that bigger Who nerds than me noticed), as an asylum, the Daleks there didn't seem that insane, just sleepy. They woke up and wanted to exterminate people, sounds pretty normal. I guess Oswin was fairly crazy, but not much else. I mean these were things Daleks wanted no part of, it would have been interesting to see why, but all we got were eggs.

That's true.

I was expecting wildly insane Daleks.

And it was nice seeing the vanquished Daleks in the ICU.

I can see that. These ones were all dilapidated; their batteries run down or some-such. Frankly, if they were bat-ass insane, I don't see Oswin being able to maintain her self-deception. ("You are not as blood thirsty as we are! Exx-plain, or be eggs-term-inated!")

Considering that they were all on their last dregs of power, you have to wonder why the rest of the tricycles were afraid to go down...

Maybe they were afraid because the Daleks on the planet were able to convert humans to Daleks?

I meant the full conversion like Oswin.

But who knows. I think Moffat has said he's putting the Daleks away for awhile.

Moffat called the Daleks "the most reliably defeatable opponent in the universe" -- he didn't let himself down.

I'd love to see a dalek go scott evil insane and up and shoot the doctor sometime, but like scott was told "that's not how we do things around here"

Lamentably, i think JLC was a one off as souffle girl b/c the last 3 companions have all been in a one-off episode before companiondom so this follows suit. Don't forget karen gillan was one of the pyrovillian rock monk chicks in pompeii on volcano day early in s4.

But yeah, til clara shows up at xmas JLC will have to settle for being a 4chan waifu.

Beebo, i was thinking of possible grand stories for 50 and it could be done without doctor WHOOOO????!!! My good ideas

1) the editor. Nuff said
2) remember when 10ant said a timelord absorbing the time vortex would be a "vengeful god"?? What if badwolf/9 became that and split off. Normal doctor vs evil omnipotent doctor. His friends/halfbreeds (10.5 and flesh 11) tip the scales and teach kids a lesson in the downside of omnipotence

Or fuck it just bring back the cartmel master plan he's the other and a founding member of timelord society

Idk. Seeing 11 dance around singing doctor WHOOOO??? was blah. I wanna know who blew up the tardis and/or wherethe penisfingeres come from

Hopefully they won't be singing and dancing much. Because like you said, that'd get real boring.

So let's see: omnipotent Doctor. You had a slight case of that with Tennant's "time lord victorious" bit. I could see a close transition from that portrayal to the Roger Delgado (Pertwee era) Master.

I don't know if I'd go that route. I have Rassilon from Tennant's last episode, and I have Omega, circa "The Three Doctors." (Omega did an appearance under Peter Davison, where he was an utter pud. That's the episode in Amsterdam, which I like, otherwise, because that's how I remember Belgium when I was in High School. So its sort of a "momento" episode, either though the story sucked eggs.)

Anyway, they're both formidable, and if you add the Valyard, you got a rogue Doctor. But I guess, it depends on what they're trying to do... To me the important thing is, you want to create a situation that brings back all the Doctors (with stand-ins for the deceased.) Because, otherwise, you already got the story told with the Panoptigon (sp) from 2 years back.

You do anything with Bad Wolf, then you have Rose and the family and Mickie and, y'know, that was all from Tennant's *first companion*.

Honestly? I think the "Torchwood" episode (where they intro'ed the agency,) with the Daleks obliterating the Cybermen could/should have been refactored so both groups get liquidated. Because, the last "good" Dalek episode had Tom Baker in it (Sarah Jane Smith was the companion.) The prior "good" Dalek episode was under Hartnell, where they had taken over Earth. So, you know, lots of obligatory Dalek stories that we're all that good...

Kinda weird episode.

The Doctor gathers Nefertiti and some hunter guy, along with the Ponds and ends up on a Silurian ship with no Silurians left but plenty of dinosaurs. Rory's dad comes along for the ride.

Amy asks "Are they (Nefirtiti and other guy) the new us?" And the Doctor says he's put together a gang. "I've never had a gang before." Except with Jack, Martha, Donna, Sarah Jane, Mickey and Rose.

Apparently all the Silurians were killed by a collector that is quite reminiscent of the bad guy in the movie Up. He uses his robots to force the Doctor to heal him and tries to take Nefirtiti in Exchange for letting everyone else live.

Doctor eventually saves he day and everyone is happy. Amy and Rory want to go home, but Brian Pond goes traveling, sending postcards from everywhere.

The ending with Amy wanting to go home seems to contradict her earlier statement to the Doctor about her worrying that he's weaning them off of him. Oh well. 3 more Pond episodes.

Overall a fun episode. Nice Harry Potter casting as well.

I just hope these rumours about Rory are not true.

Was amused the robots were voiced by Mitchell and Webb. The Doctor sure killed that guy without hesitating.

Previous management. And even that was, "let's max out on companions."

An odd episode. Did they take the dinos home, or are they winging their way to Skaros?

"Got any vegetables in there? (pointing at Brian's pants.)" "Just my balls." as the guy produces some golf balls.

Yeah, well, he went through a number of Silurians, too. And he's got goofy robots.

This whole first half of the season has been good individual episodes.

They seem like Tenant's last run. Stand alone episodes that fill out a contract.

The Ponds are leaving on Saturday. Hopefully we're set up for something in the second half of the season.

Moffat only wrote the first one. Meaning (to me) they could have played in any order.

The setup should be a cameo by one of the Dr's to establish whatever storyline they're doing for the 50th anniversary

as my little brother would say: OMFG THE PONDSCUM ARE LEAVING!!!!

this has been sledgehammered over my head as being dramatic and sad and emotional and all that.... this tells me that i'm pretty sure they know that moffat is just delivering "meh" cult worship in convenient doctor who format.

obviously karen gillan is hot, but otherwise why would anyone care about these plebs? </4chan>

in approximately 16min and 34secs i'll endeavor to find out.... seriously i'm watching this show nowadays pretty much because i'm a t-baker and eccleston guy and i know someday simon pegg is gonna show up as a timelord and i'm gonna be able to go to ~5 people and be like SEE SEE SEE?!?!?!?!?

allow me to reiterate this just so i'm formally on record..... the concept of having an episode of your show called "the long game" in series 1 where an otherwise one-off villan ~10yrs later ends up being a major force of universal malevolence behind-the-scenes responsible for all the evil since his last appearance is so cool and badass that i'll prolly watch this show until i die just in the hopes that i can be proven right.

So the Ponds have departed, having been zapped back in time by the Weeping Angels. Professor Song is no longer in jail. The Doctor is alone again.

This "season" was just blah for me.

Yeah, Ponds stuck around too long. The single episode things were meh with none of them standing out at all. In retrospect the season opener was the best, and if you would have told me that when it aired I'd have been rightly disappointed. The split season sure doesn't help. Battlestar Galactica did it a few times, but that had a solid 10 episodes in each half. I didn't think I'd miss Tennant, but he can carry shitty episodes much better than Smith can.
