The major problem the teachers have is that they're led by Jabba the Hut. COME UP WITH A BETTER SPOKESPERSON, MORONS! No wonder they're losing in the court of public opinion.

I find it hard to criticize. I'm mailing it in right now.

yeah, my suggestion was literally out of an 80s Mark Harmon movie

But I agree with Ivan. There needs to be some performance pay. I also dont know how.

Was it as poignant as Stealing Home?

What you're losing is the teachers that care. The ones who are just there to make money will learn how to gradually do less and less work. Higher pay will increase your talent pool to draw from for good teachers, teachers who can differentially teach, who have elaborate lesson plans, are good at discipline, are self motivated to the extreme and love teaching. Low pay will get low results.

Kirstie Alley was the target of Mark Harmon's affection, whilst being coveted himself by a young Courtney Thorne-Smith.

Loved Summer School. Why can't anyone make a movie like that now?

I'd hate for my bonus/employment to hinge on the productivity of a kid who didn't have breakfast and had to walk through a war zone to get to school.

Good point

What would you suggest then?

No performance reviews?

I'm not on either side and don't really know enough about this to try to propose a solution, but there needs to be some type of agreed upon evaluation of teachers. Pretty much every other profession I've heard of has some type of standards of job performance. Teachers shouldn't exempt from that.

Do I have to solve all of life's problems?

I know I wouldn't leave it in the hands of an often biased principal.

I cannot tell you the times my children have had what I consider I bad teacher but another parent considers fantastic and vice versa. I know I had some great teachers in my time but I never ran across one who took a particular interest in me or me in them. I just don't know how you fairly evaluate teachers.

performance reviews are not the answer. I don't know what the answer is but it ain't performance reviews. Students aren't being paid to go to school. They are not co-workers that you are being asked to motivate. They don't want to be there and aren't being compensated to do so. You have zero carrots to hold over their heads.

you can't legislate caring. You can tell by the 'ol eyeball test, but that's not going to hold water to a union.

HIRE MORE TEACHERS. SMALLER CLASS SIZES. That's a great start.

I would propose a portfolio of items including lesson observations by third-parties, parent evaluations, test scores, other measurables including student writing samples, professional development programs attended, perhaps a few other things.

But real evaluation is too hard and costs money.

how bout getting high paid administration off their rears and into doing the evaluations? In many cases a set of eyes on the classroom would certainly help.

How do you do it?

The only real way to alleviate the overcrowding is to build more schools and hire more teachers. That costs money we ain't got.

So do you raise taxes to pay for it?

Maybe see if Qatar or China is willing to lend us a hand.

We're totally good for it.

The only way to neutralze China's hold on our money, was to completely crash our financial system rendering their debts worthless!!

I understand that. Right now, most of my property taxes to the school is going to...Kishwaukee College. Now, that's moronic.
