I find it interesting that the media and everyone else is quoting the top level salary.

if it was a great job you'd have applicants out the door.

Dont they?

nope. My wife was begged to stay last year, they are to the point in her school district of [secretly] hiring unqualified people. People without an endorsement. People who are certified to teach at the middle school level but not the h.s. level. They're already illegal on their class sizes, which were over 40 and she was not informed of this prior. There's a lot of skeletons in the poor districts school's closet. The people at the top (administration) make a ton of money and have too much at stake to run a clean house.

I can't say I'm surprised. The general public's knee-jerk reaction to any labor dispute seems to be that the strikers are just greedy complainers. I could even partially see why that happens in sports (they're paid millions), but no matter what the trade, the picketers seem to be generally maligned.

The bigger question is, "Why is that?"

In this case, it's because it seems as if the union want more money for more work (reasonable) while not wanting failing teachers to be held accountable (unreasonable).

Well, Midget and JORR kinda answered that

But I dont see the exact same thing as you.

I see overwhelming support for the teacher.

It comes down to public perception of the job

Most everyone will support Cops, Fireman, and Teachers because they respect the job.

Construction guys and factory workers dont get the same treatment

Jabba the Hut as the face of the teachers. Start there.

My wife once worked with autistic kids. The paperwork involved with "No Child Left Behind" is onerous to say the least.

There are teachers in our district making six figures to teach drivers ed. The newbies now start out at around 35K here.

Why do I hear so many teachers talking about not being able to find a job then?

A lot of conflicting stories here (not questioning you, but percepetion is wildly volatile)

you know what teachers need? Paraprofessionals. One in every classroom when there's a certain amount of BD kids. Legislation put all these kids into classrooms with all other students, then there's nobody to deal with them.

Where the jobs are is key, RPB. Good school districts have applicants out the door. Bad school districts take every tom dick and harry.

It seems like you are talking about the School system in the rest of the state..completely different from the Chicago system.

You know who has it easy...women!

No matter what they tell you about wanting to be independant and professional they always know in the back of their minds that there is a possibility that they will not have to work anymore when they get married (unless they get shakled to one of you low earners). Even if they do have to work they usually don't have to deal with the intense pressure of being the principal wage earner in most cases. Then, whenever the stress of life gets too intense, they just get pregnant and have nine months of eating whatever they want and everyone waiting on them hand and foot followed by another three months of the most strenuous work being someone sucking on their nips. That's the life for me!

I wasn't referring to CPS. Referring to close in the city but not in it. For example (she wasn't there but has friends there) East Aurora.

Bad school districts also receive 300/400 applicants for a normal position.

This whole thing is Daleys fault for letting the grammar schools go 5.5 hours a day while hs went 6.5 to 7.

Then Rahm tries to add a bunch of time and hasn't given out raises in three years. What di dhe think would happen.

CPS starts out paying well relative ot most unit districts. However the top of their scale is much lower then surrounding suburbs, which is why most people try and leave after a few year.

That may be true..but when you are basically the worst public school system in the nation and paid fairly well ...there is some merit to those claims from the part timers...my point was there are many people trying to get that job, City of fools made it seem like like nobody was willing or interested to take that challenge.

No.

I'm not focusing on Karen Lewis' looks. Her presentation of her case has been abominable. One of the biggest complaints from her has been that Emmanuel has been rude and dismissive of her.

I don't care about that.

Plus they have to live in the city, except the administrators do not, also Special Education Teachers are exempt.
My Friend was recruited to leave his cushy Suburban job to work for CPS. He went into the interview thinking he was a lock. They guy looked up from his paperwork and told him that with his degrees and such he was overqualified and he would not be able to pay him what he was worth.
He took the job anyway, now he had the contract to live in the city put before him he signed it then the admin guy told him he didn't need to sign it because he was exempt. He asked if it could be torn up and the guy said with a straight face,no you signed it and it is binding.

right. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm not really specifically talking about CPS.

I find it extremely hard to believe it went down exactly like that. Details are missing.

And if it did, your friend is dumb for honoring that worthless contract.
