Inspired by IMU, Boyd, and over a dozen beers. Just pick an artist you like a lot and say your 10 favorite songs by them. Not sure what the point of this is but it sounds like a good idea right now. These are not really in order. Thatd take more effort than Im capable of right now.

Grateful Dead

1. Terrapin Station
2. Box of Rain
3. Scarlet Begonias
4. Eyes of the World
5. St Stephen
6. Uncle John's Band
7. Just A Little Light
8. Jack Straw
9. New Speedway Boogie
10. Shakedown Street

Bob Dylan

1. Tangled Up in Blue
2. Desolation Row
3. Shelter From the Storm
4. Blowin in the Wind
5. Maggie's Farm
6. Idiot Wind
7. Positively 4th St
8. Hurricane
9. With God on Our Side
10. Visions of Johanna

More to follow later probably. Also probably should have thought this through more but whatever

It would make my Top 20. Theres a reason I said I probably didnt think it through enough. 24 hours from now my Dead and Dylan lists could look pretty different. Nice Dylan 10 though, and I agree on Like a Rolling Stone. It was the first one I left off probably.

It pains me not to see Penny Lane higher. As well as Ticket to Ride or Paperback Writer even showing up.

I suppose I could shut my mouth and come up with my own Top 10.

Youre about to hate my Beatles 10.....

Here's a free tip .... change out that shitfest "Across the Universe" with, say, "Come Together" ... or even just a recording of a group of gibbons playing kazoos with their asses.

Anyway, here's another purposeless list that nobody else wants to read, with the obvious (if you know me) choice - Steely Dan:

1] Do It Again
2] F.M. (second best vamp ever ... #1 you ask? Lou Reed's "Take a Walk on the Wild Side")
3] Green Earrings
4] Pretzel Logic
5] Aja
6] Rikki Don't Lose That Number
7] Hey Nineteen
8] Reelin' In The Years (their live version really brings out the killer straight-ahead shuffle feel)
9] Kid Charlemagne
10] Peg

Honorable Mentions: Gaucho; Security Joan

I remember seeing Donald Fagen on Letterman when Gaucho first came out and Letterman asked him what bodacious meant. Fagen said in his nasal whine, "It's a word that's used to describe cowboys."

Musically, it's for shit. There may be all sorts of wonderful ideas and anecdotes surrounding it, the lyrics some may find interesting, even poignant, but as I said, musically, it's for shit.

It's like when a redneck discovers how awful "Proud to be an American" is ... sure, it's rare, and it often takes courage to stand up to say the truth, that it's awful and anyone that likes it should be put on a list to be immolated within the next decade, to help hasten the song's disappearance from the social psyche as a whole. But fear not, the truth shall set you free brother.

 nice.

I put equal stock into lyrics as music when I listen to music. Probably because I couldnt play a guitar worth a shit.

I'm not sure what's worse, a big fan of Steely fucking Dan talkin shit to me about music, or said person making amusing salient points while doing it. Either way I think I might hate you Don.

The only folks I've ever known that hold Steely Dan in low regard (I don't mean don't like it, I mean don't respect it) are those that can't actually listen to music and pick it apart to find out what's going on, and then listen again and again and keep finding layers of wonderment through subsequent listenings, hearing things they never heard in this or that song previously.

Put a different way, it's fine to say you don't like Steely Dan - unless you subsequently wish to present yourself as a music snob .... saying one then the other disqualifies the latter directly because of your stance on the former.

Again, these are the facts, and they are undisputed.

I have no beef with Steely Dan, although I much prefer the older, edgier, more muscular stuff to their latter day forays into what I'd call pure jazz rock like Aja. Interestingly enough, I think the lyrics deteriorated as the music became smoother. "Kid Charlemagne" plays like a movie. Drug dealers on the run are a lot more interesting than some fucked up broad drinking a big black cow.

I shouldn't have out those lists together hammered. Forgetting Mr Tambourine Man is embarrassing. That would be in my top 5.

Don, Steely Dan's alright. I'm not sure what you meant though. Of course I can listen to music and hear the bass, rhythm, guitar, etc and understand what they are doing. I think most people can. I'm about the furthest thing from a music snob though. I like what I like and don't care much to argue about it. I was just drunk and trying to talk shit and failing.

I need coffee.

Also embedded in the song are the 2 glorious Larry Carlton solos.
