Speak for yourself. "I Got the News" is about going down on a lesbian.

I like the whole run equally (not counting the reunion stuff, which is soulless and terrible). Katy Lied is probably the best album, right between the early sound and the uber-polished sound. Donald Fagen's solo album The Nightfly is quite good, too.

"International Geophysical Year" would slot in there somewhere if it had been on a band album. "The Second Arrangement," too, if it had made it to an album.

Doc,

Have you heard/what do you think of Going Back from his last album 2120 South Michigan Ave?

I must admit that I have up on buying the new stuff quite a few years back. I bought quite a few clunkers back when music stores still existed.

I'll seek it out now and give you an opinion.

Just gave it a listen. First reaction is that it has a lot of the same problems that most of his original stuff has - the sound is derivative and it lacks depth or feeling in the song. His lyrics are usually clunky or, just too wordy or something. They just usually don't have the right sound.

He's had very few original songs that he's gotten quite right, IMO. I'd list them as -

Bad to the Bone
Gear Jammer
I Drink Alone
Long Gone
Back to Wentzville

And, I'll even guiltily admit I even kind of like If You Don't Start Drinkin' and Get a Haircut. Born to be Bad and You Talk Too Much are songs that can be listened to occassionally as well but none of these are as good as the ones I listed, again, IMO.

Holy Mary Mother of God ..... I don't quite know what I just watched there, but it was a treasure. Because of my Steely Dan man crush, I also was quite pleased that the snippet they used towards the end of the "FM" track wasn't the typical radio edit, but the full album version. Also, the quick Michael McDonald "Take 537" bit was fucking hilarious.

A Song for Sleeping by STP is probably their prettiest song ever...

The Smashing Pumpkins

1. Obscured
2. Frail and Bedazzled
3. Soma
4. Tristessa
5. The Chimera
6. East
7. Starla
8. The Everlasting Gaze

10. Glissandra

Two of my favorite songs are new....The Chimera and Glissandra are on the new album.

Off the top of my head, solo Fagen/Becker tracks in no particular order.

IGY
Book of Liars
On the Dunes
Junkie Girl
Lucky Henry
The Nightfly
True Companion (if music could exist in liquid form, this chart would be the norma normans)

(oops .... Security Joan goes in this list, not the Steely Dan honorable mention list earlier .... so take it off that list and replace it with the unreleased demo "Dallas" just for fun, and also the destroyed and thus also unreleased "You Got the Bear")

I do not recall ever hearing anyone cover any Dan songs that I liked .... as close as I've come is David Garfield & Bernard Purdie doing 'Babylon Sisters. If you're desperately in love with Larry Carlton, you could try his version of 'Josie'.

If you can find it, there's a CD out that a bunch of cats, including McDonald, Fagen, and Boz Scaggs did live .... as good as that might sound, I wasn't as utterly thrilled as sure as I would be .... the bonus was McDonald gets to sing the lead vocal for the four measures coming out of the break of 'Pretzel Logic', which directly addressed my musical fantasy of what would Dan have sounded like if he hadn't gone to the Doobie Bros and took over lead vocals.

Is not. It's one of Zeppelin's hidden gems. Better than shitty fucking "D'yer Maker."

To be fair, while the singles are catchy, there were some really high quality deep cuts on all of the Pumpkins albums.

CH: the piano riff gets stuck in my head for days and irritates the bejesus out of me. I don't really like D'yer Maker, either.

Just because a song is a single doesn't make it any better than non-single album cuts. These lists are mostly riddled with the hits of most of the artists people listed. Does everyone here only own Greatest Hits albums?

Sorry guys...'bout to nerd this thread up a bit...avoided picking entire suites since those don't really fit in the spirit of an individual "song" (one exception is noted below)

Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori

1. One Final Effort
2. The Maw
3. Never Forget
4. On A Pale Horse
5. Unyielding
6. Earth City
7. Follow Our Brothers
8. "The Battle Begins" from Winter Contigency
9. The Menagerie (breaking my no suites rule on this one...it's all very good and the transitions are done well enough that it feels like one continuous piece of music)
10. "Time to Dance" from The Package

Is this a junior high level expository writing class? Find a source, reword it, turn in, pass?

One of us was smart enough to go to college. The other wasn't.
