Journalism Degree :(

I had some fun, but I don't think it was worth it @ all. I've only had one job in the media, for a local monthly. Couldn't afford to keep doing it. Now I work a job I hate, the type of job I went to school to avoid.

BTW, if anyone ever tells you it doesn't matter what degree you have, sock them in their fucking mouth. Companies only look for people who have degrees in a specific field.

My degree is worthless because in this field you have to be connected. If you aren't it's "fuck you". Any other field won't even consider you, even if they are looking for people who can "communicate".

Wait, so you actually know what the fuck you're talking about most of the time?

Well that's not fair!

Not at all. Those degrees are worth a buck fifty at the public library, but the library is more honorable.

Did you graduate college, from what school and how long?

Your response answers none of these questions.

This is excellent advice and exactly what I tell anyone who asks.

Come out of college with a skill.

Are you suggesting that my ability to regale you with interesting tales via the written word is less than a skill? Thank God for the University of Illinois and its English Department.

I have had the complete opposite experience. Every job I ever interviewed for there was never any issue I didn't have a technical degree. In IT its refreshing when someone can communicate effectively I guess :D

My girlfriend is a technical trainer, but she's very well socialized for a geek. Her job had been in her company's IT Department, but a decision was made to move her to HR. When she was in IT she was by far the best communicator in the entire department. In HR she is probably the worst.

The only degree that matters in your career is the degree to which you can spew BS.

My wife is in HR - too much communication in that department! They like to over complicate things IMO. The hoops you have to jump through to get someone who is incapable of doing their job fired in an At-Will Employment state is insane. HR is like Audit, they make stuff up to justify their existence :P

Not exactly, Memphis wasn't really all that bad to tell you the truth. I had a hell of a lot of fun there as
a 20 year old kid who looked old enough to never be carded. My two main beefs with the school lay in
the fact that while a large university ( over 20,000 ) only about 4,000 students lived on campus. If you
weren't in a frat or sorority there wasn't much else to do except drink at the pool halls, which I did quite
frequently. The fact that there wasn't a true campus lifestyle available was a big turnoff. Had some good
basketball but you would have to get downtown to the Pyramid to see a men's game.

Some really great food down there and Beale Street and Memphis in May are not to be missed if you are
in the area. Never went to Graceland. I was glad I saw the writing on the wall by the end of the semester
and an old friend of mine was looking for a roommate at Illinois State which I really enjoyed. Wish I would have
gone there first. Sent applications to Illinois and Wisconsin as well but didn't have the marks to get in.

Yeah it is amazing that it is a school that big and it is still a commuter college.
