The Cubs will honor Kid K with a Kerry Wood Appreciation Day Sunday, Sept. 23 at Wrigley Field.

There will be a pregame ceremony before the 1:20 contest against the Cardinals and the first 20,000 fans will get a commemorative Kerry Wood poster, courtesy of Advocate Health Care.

Wood's son, Justin (he of the infamous photo on the right), will throw out the first pitch to his father. The entire Wood family will sing the Seventh Inning Stretch and proceeds from the Cubs' 50/50 raffle will go to the Wood Family Foundation, which was founded in June of last year by Kerry and his wife Sarah.

Wood surprised Cubs fans by announcing his retirement May 18 before making his final appearance against the White Sox, striking out Dayan Viciedo. He was a fan favorite during his 12 years on the North Side, as evidenced by the roar at the Cubs Convention in January when Pat Hughes announced "some breaking news" in Wood re-signing with the team.

The 35-year-old racked up more than 1,500 strikeouts in his 14-year career, including 1,470 in a Cubs uniform. He struck out at least 217 batters for three straight years from 2001-03. He led the NL with 266 strikeouts in the Cubs' heartbreaking 2003 season, with an 11.3 K/9 rate.

As much as he is known for his strikeouts, Wood is also famous for his myriad of arm injuries over the years. After starting just 14 games from 2005-06, he reinvented himself as a reliever and never started again. The 1998 Rookie of the Year even wound up saving 54 games from 2008-09.

Didn't the Cubs do that right after he struck out Dayan Viciedo in a White Sox/Cubs' game at Wrigley? Am I missing something?

Why not celebrate the greatest game ever pitched again?

I thought Comcast SportsNet did that during the MLB All-Star Break...The 1998 game where he struck out 20 Astros, and later telling CSNC's bald-headed David Kaplan about arm issues during that milestone game.

6 SO innings vs. the 1st place Reds. Is he part of the puzzle?

They should really honor all the other Cubs that have been integral parts of 4 different Cub playoff teams before they get to Wood.

I know. They make celebrating minimal success an art form. Some days it gets to me, most it doesn't.

My appreciation of Kerry Wood makes me less desirous of a Cubs World Series.

I think it's interesting that the only reason Sox fans like Paul Konerko is because Brad Lidge kind of sucks.

I hope I live to see the day that my grandchild can shake the hand of the first White Sox fan to ever take an entry-level undergraduate marketing class.

Fuck the 69 Cubs. Why not honor the 84 team that was the best Chicago Cub team in modern history? The fucking Tigers wanted no part of that at all. Fuck Steve Garvey and the Pudres. Best Cub team ever. And they still blew it. Eats my ass to this day.
