And yes, all teams do stuff like this with the possible exception of the Yankees.

How is this worse than starting your home games at 7:11.

How so? Both were done due to sponsorships.

I supposed I could have posted the old Goupon link to where $10,000 could have gotten you to throw out the first pitch at a Cubs game. He seems to think (wrongly) that the Sox are the only team in town who have lame promotions.

A sign hanging in a stadium isn;t exactly the same as changing your start time to some odd time.

Besides, you were strike 2. Strike 1 was for UMN comparing any type of sponsorship deal to a day honoring a former player.

Yeah. That moving of a start time from 7:10 to 7:11 was a real killer.

I'm just going by memory and not comparing stats or anything.
They did have a great starting 4:
Jenkins
Holtzman
Hands
Pappas.
Also,Hickman & Williams had fantastic years. They had Johnny Callison,Joe Pepitone. Two guys that were not there in '69. Plus,
Banks,Beckert,Kessinger. One big loss was an injury to Hundley. He hardly played in '70.

EDITED:
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/artic ... 1970-1973/

This balance of run-scoring and run-preventing talent gave the 1970 Cubs a Pythagorean record of 94-68 – the best in the National League, three games better than that of Cincinnati’s vaunted “Big Red Machine” that ran away with the West Division. Yet all the Cubs could muster out of this statistical bacchanalia was an actual record of 84-78, five games behind the division-winning Pittsburgh Pirates.

Wasnt old enough to judge the 84 team.

I think the best team over a year was 2008. But the 03 team down the stretch was better.

Yes,I just wanted to back up my statement. At least my memory still works. That 1970 team had a great deal of talent BUT big holes in the bullpen and a weak bench after Pepitone. Still,I think they were better overall than any other Cub team I have seen. Just my opinion.

I'd like to see the metrics of if there's any hybrid of the 2 reasons anyone would be upset about this.
1- I'm a white trash Sox fan so anything related to the Cubs makes me realize my teams rank in this city 5th
2 - Bernstein would not like this and I want to impress the shortest 5'8.5" man in the world.

The Cubs will honor Kid K with a Kerry Wood Appreciation Day Sunday, Sept. 23 at Wrigley Field.

There will be a pregame ceremony before the 1:20 contest against the Cardinals and the first 20,000 fans will get a commemorative Kerry Wood poster, courtesy of Advocate Health Care.

Wood's son, Justin (he of the infamous photo on the right), will throw out the first pitch to his father. The entire Wood family will sing the Seventh Inning Stretch and proceeds from the Cubs' 50/50 raffle will go to the Wood Family Foundation, which was founded in June of last year by Kerry and his wife Sarah.

Wood surprised Cubs fans by announcing his retirement May 18 before making his final appearance against the White Sox, striking out Dayan Viciedo. He was a fan favorite during his 12 years on the North Side, as evidenced by the roar at the Cubs Convention in January when Pat Hughes announced "some breaking news" in Wood re-signing with the team.

The 35-year-old racked up more than 1,500 strikeouts in his 14-year career, including 1,470 in a Cubs uniform. He struck out at least 217 batters for three straight years from 2001-03. He led the NL with 266 strikeouts in the Cubs' heartbreaking 2003 season, with an 11.3 K/9 rate.

As much as he is known for his strikeouts, Wood is also famous for his myriad of arm injuries over the years. After starting just 14 games from 2005-06, he reinvented himself as a reliever and never started again. The 1998 Rookie of the Year even wound up saving 54 games from 2008-09.

Totally ridiculous that they are having a "Day" for Kerry Wood.

Give me a God damn break.

Yeah, they are probably going to miss the playoffs due to the distraction.

I was 20 in 1984. I know the 1970 team did the same as the 1969 team. Did not win shit OR play in the poatseason. That automatically makes the 84 Cubs better.

Scooter,
I'm just talking sheer talent. The 1970 Cubs were stacked. But one thing is true,if MLB didn't go to the extra playoff system in 1984,the Cubs would have two or three pennants by now for having the best record in the NL. 1984 & 2003. I forgot if there was one more in there.

Actually maybe its symbolic of a new era. Salute the past and look towards the future.

He did a lot in the community and played his butt off here for 12 of 14 years.

He was also a huge part of 4 playoff teams and 2 other winning seasons. Best of any post world war 2 Cub that wasn't a DB like big Z.

Actually to be honest his stats make me sad. Look at them. If it wasn't for the injuries he might have been the best or among the best of his generation.

And the dumbest idea of all is that this has any impact on whether the team can win.

Apparently they will announce what he's going to do with the organization from here on in. Buzz has been he's going to be a special assistant to Jed Hoyer because he has front office aspirations. There have been rumors of him taking on an Ernie Banks type role with Ernie not getting any younger. Even a wild rumor he will replace Moreland in 2013.

With the Cubs history you know what will happen. He will work under Hoyer developing his skills as a GM and just as he's ready to be a great GM he'll sign somewhere and lead them as GM to the world series.

Why always so bitter?

An interesting poll for fans who are old enough.

What hurt more 84 or 03?

For me 1984.

2008, you mean? The 2003 Cubs had the fewest wins of the four NL playoff teams.

I agree the 70 team was loaded with talent. So was the 84 team. If Jim Frey would have not tried to set his WS pitching rotation BEFORE getting to the WS this conversation does not exist. I am a little lost on the extra playoff team you are speaking of. In 84 the NL had two divisions East And West. They played a FIVE game playoff to go to WS. Or I could be wrong.

When Santo died they needed to find a mascot for whom they could have a "Day" a couple times each year. Next they'll retire his number. Then the Hall of Fame push based on the "greatest game ever pitched" and his elite K/9 numbers.

First of all, that's just really patently stupid.

Second of all, when the fuck has that ever happened before? Which GM left the Cubs and led another team to a World Series?
