Has there ever been a re-make of an earlier film where one of the stars of the original film, came back to play a different, yet pivital role in the remake (not just a cameo)?

i.e. If Kevin Bacon was in the Footloose remake playng John Lithgow's character...

Maverick comes to mind...

Even though it was a TV show remade into a movie, James Garner doesn't play his original role...

Burt Reynolds played the warden in the remake of The Longest Yard. In the original, he was the quarterback (Adam Sandler in the remake.) That's the biggest 180 degree hero-to-villain I can think of.

Not sure if this counts, but Not Another Teen Movie had Molly Ringwald and the principal from the Breakfast Club.

Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum both have pretty significant roles in the remake of Cape Fear.

Wasn't James Cromwell the warden? Burt was just some old con.

When Bryan Singer remade Superman he used the footage from the original Superman with Marlon Brando as Jor-El.

It's a different role because Brando is fathering a different Superman in the new movie.

Jon Schneider played Pa Kent in Smallville, which everyone knows was a remake of Dukes of Hazzard. And Tom Wopat even guest starred in an episode.

Damn. I would have bet money that I was the only guy here around our age who either

a). Watched that movie when it aired.

or

b). Could specifically remember that cameo.

You and I are alike in more ways than you'd ever feel comfortable admitting to.

This doesn't count, but Danielle Harris was in Halloween 4 and 5 as the lead character and Michael Myers' niece, and then she was in the Halloween remake as a totally different character.

Edit: And I believe the real Rudy was in the movie Rudy as an extra in the stands.

Ok this idea is fizzling

Now, which cameos would you WANT to see?

I could see Danny Noonan as Carl Spackler in a terrible Caddyshack remake.
