I said Detroit's pitching and defense was not good enough for them to win the division and that was dismissed for the most part. rpb specifically said I was putting too much stock into defense. Now obviously I didn't expect the Sox to play this poorly down the stretch, but the Tigers are pretty much what I said they would be all season.

I think if the Sox can sweep this Tribe and split with the Rays they will be popping the champagne next Sunday or Monday 8)

I will admit being wrong on the defense argument. Generally offense and pitching are waaaaay more important. But this Tiger team is legendarily bad and its affecting them.

Defense is still a distant third

Normally it is, but Detroit is putrid with the gloves

The funny thing is, the worst offenders haven't been the corner infielders. The OF minus Austin Jackson has been just atrocious (on both sides of the ball). Leyland has been around forever, but he does some odd things with playing time.

Omar Infante has been terrible at 2B since the Tigers got him from the Marlins before the MLB Trade Deadline.

Peralta, he of limited range.

SHARK, everyone they have played at 2B has been horrid.
About the only sensible thing Leyland has done defense-wise is play the glove-allergic Delmon Young at DH.

I also don't understand why Valverde is the closer. If you look in their bullpen (stats and stuff-wise; both) you could actually make a case that he's the least reliable guy.

Leyland usually does pretty well with veteran-laden teams, just not this one...

Well, that's why the Tigers traded for Omar Infante. Ryan Raburn? Ramon Santiago? Danny Worth? Think third base for the White Sox was unproductive before Kevin Youkilis' arrival? Second base was a gaping hole for Detroit. It still appears that way now.

Frank, it was as unproductive for Detroit as third base before Youkilis' arrival here.

Well, none of them were productive before Youkilis' arrival, and even Olmedo isn't anything special at 3B. I forgot one! Jose Lopez...

I don't say this in a Cub-fan anti-White Sox type way, but that's really bad for a team battling for a playoff spot.

It really is unfortunate and I don't quite understand it.

I think its pretty easy to understand. Its just math.

And Why does no one, or very few people, bring up the fact that the title drought being over could negatively affect ticket sales? Ya know, the guy who kept swearing he'd never go back but did because he wanted to see a WS title in his lifetime?

That guy isnt coming back.

Combine that with the economy, the cub split, and the comfort of watching at home and BOOM....average attendance

Just wait until next year when the Red Line is shut down beyond Cermak.

Math doesn't explain it. It's not like the Sox are incapable of selling out.

Something has changed. Maybe you're right that they've lost a lot of casual fans that have already "seen it" but I'm still surprised that they can't fill the stadium for meaningful late-September games. Every Sox fan I've ever known is still just as big of a Sox fan. It's weird.

I don't know if there's still fan apathy dating back to the 1994 MLB Players Strike and fans still point the finger at Jerry Reinsdorf for trying to break the MLBPA at the time.

They had some 29,000 TICKETS SOLD last Monday for the makeup game vs. Detroit, and it sounded like a playoff-style atmosphere.

I don't think so, SHARK. There are kids voting for President this year that weren't born when that went down.

I don't know why White Sox fans fail to show up, even if the team is in first place. When guys like A.J. Pierzynski, Kevin Youkilis, Jake Peavy & Gavin Floyd are among the former Sox in the offseason, Joe Sox Fan has no one to blame but himself for not going to the games.

Not even close to a valid excuse. There are still multiple bus route you can take to the Cell, they have a Metra stop right behind the park, and the Green Line IIT stop is a 5 minute walk just east of the park.

Frank, I'm not making excuses. Here's something else the White Sox need to do in my opinion. I keep hearing on White Sox broadcasts the "Diamond Deal of the Week" on whitesox.com in which Sox fans are encouraged to visit the Web site to buy tickets for less money. I'm not so sure it was a smart idea.

They should offer any person who attends a game this week 50% off a ticket for games this weekend.

They should declare one of these games a "blackout game".

I've got a good idea. How about you don't complain all season about how the fans don't come out and then when you might make the playoffs try to fuck that same fan you've been begging by forcing him to buy two games that don't exist?

Frank, in no way am I kidding when I say this but you are a GREAT Sox fan. Seriously. If most of us were like you, there would be 40,000 fans in that park every night.
