I said Detroit's pitching and defense was not good enough for them to win the division and that was dismissed for the most part. rpb specifically said I was putting too much stock into defense. Now obviously I didn't expect the Sox to play this poorly down the stretch, but the Tigers are pretty much what I said they would be all season.

The funny thing is, the worst offenders haven't been the corner infielders. The OF minus Austin Jackson has been just atrocious (on both sides of the ball). Leyland has been around forever, but he does some odd things with playing time.

About the only sensible thing Leyland has done defense-wise is play the glove-allergic Delmon Young at DH.

I also don't understand why Valverde is the closer. If you look in their bullpen (stats and stuff-wise; both) you could actually make a case that he's the least reliable guy.

Leyland usually does pretty well with veteran-laden teams, just not this one...

Something has changed. Maybe you're right that they've lost a lot of casual fans that have already "seen it" but I'm still surprised that they can't fill the stadium for meaningful late-September games. Every Sox fan I've ever known is still just as big of a Sox fan. It's weird.

I don't know if there's still fan apathy dating back to the 1994 MLB Players Strike and fans still point the finger at Jerry Reinsdorf for trying to break the MLBPA at the time.

Not even close to a valid excuse. There are still multiple bus route you can take to the Cell, they have a Metra stop right behind the park, and the Green Line IIT stop is a 5 minute walk just east of the park.

Frank, I'm not making excuses. Here's something else the White Sox need to do in my opinion. I keep hearing on White Sox broadcasts the "Diamond Deal of the Week" on whitesox.com in which Sox fans are encouraged to visit the Web site to buy tickets for less money. I'm not so sure it was a smart idea.
