Do you really believe that? Come on, Peeps. You're a neighborhood guy. You've seen drastic changes in the area over the past fifteen years or so. You've got a lot of younger professionals with disposable income in the area. The South Loop is booming and just minutes away. There has to be a way to reach those people and make Sox Park a cool place to be. I just think they're missing the boat.

When the Cubs abandoned Peoria, my first thought was that the Sox should try the best to move in there quickly. A couple days later I saw either Haugh or Gonzo write the same thing. There are opportunities for the Sox to cut into the Cubs "dominance". It just seems like they don't really get how.

I'm sure a guy like McDonough could fill that park. The Sox have a lot of advantages over the Cubs. They just continually fail to exploit them.

I absolutely believe that.

What would John McDonough do differently?

Easy parking, minutes from downtown, many suites for corporate clients, a team that is competitive more often than not, a lot more night games, what has actually become a "hipper" neighborhood. There are ways to market this product better than what they are doing.

I don't know. If I did, I'd be making McDonough's money. But see my post listing the advantages above. There are different approaches that could be taken.

This is true, but still nothing within real short distance of the park. There is Bacardi at the park, but I'm talking likewalk across a parking lot and you are there. Not that it has to be like Wrigleyville, but 2-4 more places near the park would be great. Put 2 places near 37th & State. Another in Bridgeport, and maybe another just a bit north. One near IIT would get all the college kids year round and clean up during the Sox season.

But the perception is that the Cell is a crappy park in a dangerous neighborhood. Neither of those are true but that's the perception.

Frank, Cork at the Park is right there.

So you have 2 places within stumbling distance. That is better than nothing, but just a few more would really help I believe.

Funny, I thought you claimed you just go to the games and leave? dont really pay attention to the area? Suddenly working on the city planning and liquor commissions?

Yes, bigfan. That's it. Suggesting a couple places near the park is city planning :roll: Here you go;

GEORGE: Ladies and gentlemen, this is Steven Koren. His G.P.A. is a solid 2.0! Right in that meaty part of the curve - not showing off, not falling behind.

WYCK: George, the quailifications for this scholarship were suppose to be.. largely academic.

GEORGE: I'm sure we're all aware of the flaws and biases of standardized tests..

WYCK: These aren't standardized tests - these are his grades.

GEORGE: Besides, Steven Koren has the highest of aspirations. He wants to be an architect.

WYCK: Is that right?

STEVEN: Actually, maybe I could set my sights a little bit higher.

GEORGE: Steven, nothing is higher than an architect.

STEVEN: I think I'd really like to be a city planner. Why limit myself to just one building, when I can design a whole city?

WYCK: Well, that's a good point.

GEORGE: No, it's not.

STEVEN: Well, isn't an architect just an art school drop-out with a tilty desk, and a big ruler?

GEORGE: It's called a T-square!

WYCK: You know, the stupidest guy in my fraternity became an architect - after he flunked out of dental school! Contratulations, young man. (Shakes Steven's hand)

STEVEN: Thank you.

WYCK: Susan would be proud of what you're doing!

STEVEN: Thank you!

I agree they could market it better. Not with those advantages though.

I dont think its a hipper neighborhood, if only because the cub "neighborhood" is so much bigger. Think of how many neighborhoods on the North Side are within a 10-15 minute el ride.

To be honest, I dont think they milked the 05 series and getting there before the Cubs as much as they should

Those are all great advantages, though. And the neighborhood is far more "cutting edge" than Wrigleyville right now. But, yeah, right around the ballpark is different. I don't think most people want a Mardi Gras out there 81 times a summer. (There are probably better qualified people here than I to disciuss neighborhood politics. Like why Jimbo caught hell if someone stood up in his "beer garden" yet Cork & Kerry is allowed to take over the entire sidewalk and it often looks like Bourbon Street after a game.) And Reinsdorf wants to keep the Sox in a bubble. Right there is a big mistake as far as I'm concerned. The concept of "Wrigleyville" grew out of a perfect storm. It was organic. It didn't occur by having a bunch of MBAs trying to squeeze every drop out of every revenue stream. Or because some smart guy had a master plan. It was largely a happy acciident. And it turned out to be golden. Now the Cubs are going to slowly and gradually take it apart piece by piece. Another advantage the Sox have.

I think you're right regarding making hay off the World Series. "Chicago's Championship Team!" But taking on the Cubs has never been Jerry's way. In fact, many people think one of the big mistakes he made upon taking over the Sox was the attitude that "we are Chicago's AL team", as if there were no competetion. I'm sure after 30 years Reinsdorf realizes that there certainly is a competition, but he's a hard-headed guy.

I think that hard-headedness is one of the things that makes him such a great guy to work for. I think Peep's mom does so he can probably attest to it. This guy is loyal as can be. And I don't think he surrounds himself with "yes men." In fact, I think he tries not to. But the guy is just so beloved by his people, they want to please him. And I think that leads to guys thinking about "Will this make Jerry happy?" rather than "Will this help us fill the ballpark?"

The neighborhood for a long time fought any additions of bars to the area.

It's getting better as the stereotypical "old ladies in their house dress looking out the window ready to call 911" die.

Not buying that Jerry Reinsdorf is a shrinking violet in the face of the Cubs when he engineered their sale to a clan of bumbling, cash-poor gomers.

He likes to fuck with the Cubs behind the scenes, not publicly.

I tend to agree with JORR's comments and general premise. Seems the branding of the WSOX hasn't been very effective. I seem to remember a report stating demographically speaking, there is not a difference between WSOX and WCUB fans. Year in and year out the WSOX have not been able to generate greater buzz around their team. They have enough positive points to sell the product, but for some reason it consistently fall short. I don't understand why.
