I'm guessing they want to see how he does this season. If its similar to his first three seasons(We'll be generous and say 3500 yds, 26 tds, 16 ints), is he going to get the $20M/year he wants?

The Bears have spent their entire franchise history searching for a QB (After Sid Luckman). I say sign him up. I was happy to see he can have just a mediocre game at QB this past Sunday. He seems to be very good or very bad. IF they don't sign him, they better have a very good backup plan.

I'd rather take the coin flip that is Cutler vs the shit that I have had to witness most of my football viewing life.

The top paid qb right now is Peyton Manning and Drew Brees and they aren't even paid $20 million so there is no way in hell Cutler even sniffs that.

I thought they both signed 5/$100M. What are the top paid guys?

Maybe I'm not current on the QB income data, but I fail to see how he rates as a $20m QB. First, I can't be sure he's worth that. Second, I can't be sure it's worth that expenditure with this team .... that is to say, with a line like that and the yearly offensive woes in one form or another, I don't necessarily see the marginal value of dropping a Boss 429 into a Dodge Dart with a broken axle.

I would just tag him while the defense ages into retirement and then make a decision later.

I wouldn't pay him a dime more. He hasn't earned his current contract. He needs to prove it on the field. You always have the Tag for fall back on.

Consider Cutler's perception outside of Chicago. Also consider that he is almost 30. There is not a huge market for Jay Cutler's services. The market would bear an above average salary for him, not an elite one. The Bears have teeth in this negotiation.

I think he's going to want something in the area of 5/$80M, $40 guaranteed. Team will counter with 5/$60M, $25-30M guaranteed.
