Unless a team advances to the playoffs, what difference does it make that they won a few more games? The Pirates were very good in the first 4 months of the season and then fell apart. Now, all they have to show for 2012 is a lousy draft position. Same for the White Sox. I would rather have an importand building block for the future and the #2 overall pick should land the Cubs just that.

The Pirates are an example of why that thinking sucks. They have top 5 picks all over their organization. The entire minor leagues is filled with top picks. Give me a good team at the MLB level every year over 100 losses and a handfull of hope.

You act like this is just a blip in an otherwise successful history for your franchise. You yourself are pusing into a third generation of failure that you will have to endure. Fuck those high draft picks. This isn't the NFL or NBA where those guys are going to make an immediate impact. You will have to wait another three years, if things pan out really well, before that guy matters...five if you take a high school player.

What difference does it make? I had a great summer with lots of enjoyment watching my team win. You didn't and you won't next year either.

Your analogy is full of flaws. The Pirates are an organization that cannot keep it's best players. When they get close to free agency, they are looking to trade them most often. They never can add the few pieces they need when the team gets close, due to budget constraints. when the Cubs get close and identify areas of need that can put them over the top, thew will add those pieces. because i have seen the quick-fix failures of the past, I am all the more enthusiastic about the current approach and confident it is the right one.

Oh, and I have enjoyed a wonderful summer. It just involved a lot more golf and a bit less Baseball. What I did not experience, was getting my hopes up in a team that was fatally flawed and destined to fall short in the end.

What you did not experience is the enrichment a fun baseball season can provide. I can see you are doing schtick now so I'll just end.

Not watching, but read this @chitrib and liked it. Too bad the pitcher wasn't covering home.

The Cubs trail 7-3 after five. Anthony Rizzo homered in the third, and Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin threw a pitch behind his back in Rizzo's next at-bat. Rizzo countered with a hook slide into catcher Wilin Rosario's left ankle on a force play in the fifth.

You can end your cotributions to this thread whenever you want, but Ill just get the last word in then.....I did experience a good deal of fun this Baseball season. I got to go to Minnesota and see their beautiful park, as well as playing golf at The Wilds, which is an exceptional golf course nearby. I only went to 8 games this summer, due to my low expectations for the team. But I have experienced some wonderful seasons (short of a Championship to be sure) in the past, including the deciding game in Atlanta in 2003 where Kerry Wood beat Mike Hampton to win the only playoff series the Cubs have captured since 1908. But I WAS THERE!! That team, the 1984 team, the 2008 team and of course the 1969 team were all great teams. But with the new management team, we have a chance to experience something we Cub fans have never enjoyed....sustained excellence. The Atlanta Braves winning 14 division titles in a row....that kind of thing is what I am hoping to experience. With a Championship mixed in as well.I like their direction and while it may not result in 14 straight division titles, contending every year and going to the post-season more often than not, would be fine.

Yes, Volstad getting rocked again is a shock - lol!

Assuming they don't come back, this sweep should insure them the # 2 pick...

Volstad writes off start as “bad luck.” Sveum: “There was really no life or anything, no breaking balls, no sticking to the game plan.”

I think it's safe to say Volstad will not be back in 2013.

I've heard him interviewed a few times and he does come off as a "blame everyone else" dick.

Sveum was ticked that Volstad diverged from game plan. Volstad pointed to some "bad luck" on infield singles. Either way, just bad.

What an idiot. He has an ERA of over 6 and he is going to do things his way?

See ya!

Put him on a separate flight back to wherever he came from. No need for that kind of bs excuse making on top of being awful.

Cubs baseball hasn't been fun since the minor league season ended. I would rather they broadcast the fall instructional league practice right now than the big league games. Aside from about 3 guys there is no reason to watch anyone else play.

And of course those 3 guys are Justin Germano, Luis Valbuena and Joe Mather

Cubs getting close to clinching # 2 pick. 1 more loss should about do it which coincidently enough will be loss number 100.

They hold a 2 game "lead" in the race for the #2 position over the Rockies, so a total of either a) 2 additional losses, b) 2 additional wins by Colorado, or c) a combination of 1 Rockies win and 1 cubs loss, to clinch the pick.

The Cubs hold the tie breaker with COL so that number is 1.

Looks like loss number 100 and the reward, the #2 overall pick, is in the bag.

Awesome! In five years I can mock you when that player doesn't pan out after you pine for him.
