Oh, I think a guy can choke. Some guys fold under pressure. I just don't think a team of different personalities can all choke at once. The Sox played almost exactly as everyone expected. They'll win 84 or 85 games. I don't think anyone believed they were better than that. Especially if you consider they didn't have their opening day starter for most of the season.

Why are you so frustrated? Are you really having that much trouble expressing yourself?

What do you think I'm denying? Ultimately it doesn't make any difference why a team loses, it lost.

But I think promoting a concept wherein a relatively large collective of human beings with different skills and different personalities all fail simultaneously due to some perceived pressure is specious at best. It's something for fans to discuss. I don't think professional athletes look at the games the same way the fans do. They go to work. Sometimes they get the job done. Sometimes they don't.

When you start talking about "contagion" or "syndromes" you sound like a nut like Hawk Harrelson. And there is absolutely no statistical evidence to support any such concept.

Now, I'll let you get back to herping and derping, champ.

I'm not remotely frustrated. That's you trying to salvage some dignity, not the reality of the situation. I saw it coming. It's a psychological protection mechanism. It makes you feel better.
Whatever it takes, JORR, to feel better. . I know it stings. I can emphathize. I've been there too. The Cubs in '04, '07 and to a lesser extent '08. I know choking when I see it. I've seen plenty of it. I'm experienced in it, as a Cubs fan. Please. We're fucking experts at recognizing it.

Yeah, because they weren't good enough. I don't think Sale lost yesterday because he was scared or lacked guts. Those are traits fans ascribe to players. He lost because his fastball wasn't as fast as it was earlier and his slider wasn't as sharp. If that's "choking" I guess you're correct, but I don't think that's what most people mean by "choke."

So the time of the season when they go on a bad streak is part of the definition of choking? It's a 162 game season. You have to play all the way to the end. I'm not shocked that a bunch of young pitchers and a guy who hasn't pitched a full season in four years got a little dicey at the end. I don't call that "choking." To me choking has a connotation of failing because of fear or nervousness. I don't see the slightest evidence that that was the case. Do you really think Paul Konerko was nervous? The guy that hit the homer in Game 2 suddenly "choke?" I just find the whole concept utterly laughable.
