If I had to guess, I'm assuming it's your opportunity to watch someone die on the internet.

When you are roughly 23 miles up, isn't the wind going to be a issue everyday?

Approximately 11 miles up in the air and beyond there is no wind or weather to consider. This guy
is jumping from over 120,000 ft up. Most commerical airlines fly about 5.5 to 6 miles up.

I could have sworn a guy just did this a few months ago. He was in a space suit.
I don't get it.

Mostly because you are old and stupid. Feel free to read an article or put it in the google machine.

Speaking of old and stupid... Where is Walt Williams Neck?

Yes, he made a test run. There is a higher record to break. But you figured that out listening to the story. You're welcome.

Recent update:

Extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner has decided against a second attempt at making a supersonic skydive over New Mexico on Thursday.

Baumgartner aborted his mission Tuesday due to high winds, but his team had hoped the weather Thursday might allow him another try.

His meteorologist Wednesday morning ruled out a Thursday jump. The team will hold a briefing to talk about next steps.

Baumgartner is hoping to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier by jumping from a capsule floated 23 miles into the stratosphere by 55-story helium balloon.

The jump was postponed due to weather Monday, then aborted at the last minute Tuesday.

The balloon is so delicate that it can only take off if winds are 2 mph or below on the ground.

Dumb question: how can he break the speed barrier? I would've assumed a human's terminal velocity would peak LONG before reaching that speed.

Speed of Sound barrier. Somewheres about 600 mph.

We need a physics geek to explain. It may be possible to reach Mach 1 if you are high enough to allow the gravitational pull to reach that speed and not have the standard drag any matter will face when pushing against air. That is the only way I can see this working.

This is free fall correct? No jet pack on the back or anything?

It's going to be while until he reaches that correct altitude.

Time to pop an IPA and get silly.

Mouthwash? Rubbing alcohol? Hand sanitizer...all the kids are doing it, they're constantly dying afterwards but it's worth a shot.
