Two things in the NLCS' matchup that resumes tomorrow afternoon between the Giants & Cardinals in St. Louis. First, Giants' 2B Marco Scutaro's status for Game 3 is unclear following a controversial slide by Cardinals' LF Matt Holliday in which Scutaro hurt his left hip and eventually left Game 2 in favor of ex-Cub Ryan Theriot in San Francisco's 7-1 Game 2 win to tie the series at a game apiece. Theriot might get the start at 2B for San Francisco as righty Matt Cain toes the rubber vs. St. Louis' righty Kyle Lohse at 3:07P tomorrow.

Also, when they play Game 4 Thursday night, Giants' righty Tim Lincecum, not lefty Barry Zito, will toe the rubber for SF manager Bruce Bochy vs. the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright. Zito was less than impressive in his Game 4 start, going only 2 2/3 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 BB & 4 K in San Francisco's 8-3 NLDS Game 4 road win over the Reds in Cincinnati.

Take out slides and home plate collisions are possibly the dumbest things in baseball.

I do not personally know Joe Girardi. By all accounts, however, he seems like a really nice man.

But somebody has to take the fall for this. Do the players bear the overwhelming responsibility for this magnificently spectacular failure of a season? Obviously. Can you fire the players responsible? Unfortunately, no. This is not the N.F.L., where underachievers can be launched without fear of the ongoing contract hit.

Joe must be like the Japanese General whose troops fall in battle. He must commit Harry Carry.
