This discussion was started in the B&B section. Bears fans should be aware of this. Sure, Angelo built this team despite not having first round picks cuz of Cutler and making bad choices with the ones he had, but it's still a good team anyway.

Only one non Jerry Angelo guy is a significant contributor to this team. That's Brandon Marshall. Pretty big one. But the defense is all Jerry Angelo's guys. Urlacher and McClellin are the only ones Jerry didn't pick. They're not doing much this year anyway.

If the Bears win a Super Bowl, Jerry Angelo deserves a ring more than Phil Emery.

Oh man, this is just like the riveting discussions over whether the 2010 Blackhawks were Dale Tallon's or Stan Bowman's, except that Tallon was just sort of an idiot whereas Angelo was an unmitigated idiot.

Jerry Angelo might just be the greatest General Manager of all time.

Bush - He's been OK. He's just a backup. I've been a little disapointed in his play, actually. Bears would be 4-1 without him.
Marshall - Big contributor
Jeffery - He's been OK. Let's not go too nuts over him. He's only caught 14 passes in 5 games. Bears would be 4-1 without him.
Rachal - Just a body
Rodriguez - Just a body.

Do you include the obvious FA pickups and trades for fairly finished products that he was forced to make because of his ineptitude in drafting? This includes the central players on offense and defense.

I don't think Angelo sucked.

I think there were a lot of troubling, really inexcusable administrative problems like checking the wrong box and not calling in the draft day trade. Either of these were fireable offenses for an executive.

I also think he missed too often on the big picks resulting in both wasted money on dog players and needing to spend more money for established FA (FA acquisitions really were a strength, as he rarely missed on these).

I think the Bears were particularly bad at self evaluation resulting in absolute neglect in the draft of areas like OL.

Finally, he had this odd proclivity for overlooking injuries that other teams found sufficiently troubling to pass on players. Williams is the obvious example but Gaines Adams died on the guy less than six months after Angelo acquired him (for a pick no one else seemed willing to pay for his underproduction). Again, when these types of moves are consistently wrong, they are fireable offenses.

I don't think I would damn him for some of his peculiar tendancies, as every GM has them. Every GM overdrafts players they just have to have. Every GM has some area that he neglects.

Ultimately Angelo is like Lovie in my mind. They are both OK. They are also both here a long time for a guy with middling production.

I'm two ticks more positive than dolphin on Angelo, though I agree with most of what he said. I think that it was time for him to go, and I think that most organizations benefit from a cleaning out after a while just because the flaws of the management tend to compound over time. His neglect of the offensive line and his inability to identify truly elite talent was his undoing, but I'll remember his era fondly.

I don't understand the impulse to turn Jerry Angelo into Chicago's Greatest Monster. He was a solid but unspectacular general manager who left the franchise in an infinitely better position than he found it in every single respect. We could have done a lot worse. I fear we will soon.

Jerry just did not believe in the big WR, for whatever reason, he never did and never got targets for Jay.

Which really made no sense, since he sold the cow and chicken to acquire him. (Hamptonism)
