Seriously, read that. Bill Simmons dreams of being this smug.

I like the first comment in the reply section to the article.

The real and honest reason I'm sick of the Cardinals is the utter falsity of your last sentence. "My team is better than your team."

No. They're not. If Bud Selig doesn't screw with the playoff format, the Cardinals were out of the playoffs both last year and this year. While the first wild card is such an old story that I've grown to accept it, the wild card the Cardinals "won" this year is not. In 107 of the 109 seasons since the first World Series, the 2012 Cardinals don't get to join the postseason. In 94 of the 109 seasons since the first World Series, the 2011 Cardinals don't get to join the postseason. And while there may be some superficial appeal to more teams in the playoffs, it vastly increases the chances of a one-off team going on a run to a title for which 162 games said they had no right to play.

The Cardinals are a stark reminder that Bud Selig is turning Major League Baseball into the NFL or NHL, where the best teams may win periodically, but four of the last seven Super Bowl champions didn't even win their division. Right now, the best team from the NL in the playoffs finished the season with the 3rd/4th best record (tied with the Braves). In the American League, it seems exceedingly probable that the team with the SEVENTH best record is going to the World Series.

Baseball determined in one or five-game sets (and, admittedly, seven) is basically fluke baseball -- the most recent example of this, of course, is the Braves-Cardinals game, where the game hinged on the Braves having their worst defensive game of the season and the outcome was cemented by Sam Holbrook's abominable (and late) infield fly call. And fluke baseball may be great for the non-practicing baseball fan, who may watch a half dozen games a year. But I'd argue that it's awful for the people who are there from April to October -- at least for every one of us unfortunate enough to not be among the smartest fans in baseball.

I'm pretty sure that column was mainly tongue-in-cheek. The guy is a Cardinals fan. So what? I'm glad he's proud. Good for him.
