Was he doing a Bernstein-esque contrarian bit, or was he being serious? If he was being serious, then I suggest that he finds a new line of work.

1. When asked about Cutler, and the hit from Suh, he replied that Suh should have been flagged and fined for a blow to the head. Cutler, Lovie, Matt Bowen, the NFL, and anybody with eyesight disagrees. Suh grabbed him by the shoulder, and escorted him to the turf in rude fashion. He didn't hit Cutler in the head. Spiegs brought up the fact that Cutler was out of the pocket, and thus a runner. Florio poo-pooed that, and then tried to compare Suh's hit to the one on Colt McCoy from James Harrison. Harrison launched himself helmet first into McCoy's facemask. The only similarity is that both QBs were hurt.

2. Mac asked Florio which defense he likes better, the Bears or the 49ers. While I agree with his premise that many had prematurely written the epitaph of the defense, and they have been fantastic, he follows it with a completely asinine statement. He said that the Bears played well on Monday, even though they played a lot of "bend but don't break" defense, and turnovers bailed them out. That is their defense. They have been playing that defense since Smith took the reigns in 2004. Keep everything in front of you, and get turnovers. Has he ever watched a Bears game prior to Monday night?


3. When discussing the Patriots, and their struggles this year, he put it all on Tom Brady. He blamed Brady for the defense blowing a 10 point lead against the Jets. He said, and I quote, "When Brady has the ball and a 10 point lead, it's his job to make it a 17 point lead." Apparently it is Tom Brady's fault that the defense allowed a 92 yard scoring drive in the 4th quarter. As if this wasn't enough verbal diarrhea, he followed with a suggestion that not only has Tom Brady lost it, he may never have even had it. The Super Bowl victories were all by three points, and others made clutch plays down the stretch.

In his defense, regarding #3, I'm pretty confident he was not of the opinion that Brady is losing/never had it, but merely throwing out there what certain people were speculating. I commented on that in the Danny Mac thread earlier. I don't think Florio agreed. Dan and Matt definitely did not.

That Brady statement was possibly one of the stupidest football thoughts I've heard in a long time.

That segment made me think again, "Why do people think this guy has a clue? Or is he just Skip Bayless in training wheels?"

i'll give florio the point that even tho the bears defense literally did what its designed to do down to the letter, by second half the bears' pass rush wasn't getting a whole lot of pressure on stafford and once he had time he was able to lead them down the field more often than not, even tho the last drive was written off as "meaningless." it's hard to inspire confidence in the national pundits when your defense goes from dominating to getting bailed out by turnovers, whether you wanna call them luck, skill, discipline, or whatever.... i left the game overall feeling "bleh" cuz the offense didn't look like a juggernaught and it honestly felt like the defense was routinely getting beat by the 2nd/3rd WRs whenever stafford needed it.

even tho the end result was giving up 7pts to the #2 statistical/yards-getting offense in football, it really felt like they were a few bounces away from giving up 21/+ therefore its hard to convert people from their preconceived notions of top defenses from last year and even beyond. i wasn't exactly puffing out my chest telling my packers friends where to shove it =D

Fair enough. Pats are a tough team to figure out. The D looks absolutely dreadful some weeks. Then you have them giving up 7 yesterday.

And blaming Brady for not putting the Jets isn't nearly as egregious as implying he was simply a "game manager" during those SB runs. I would hope we can agree on that. The latter seems to be what people are hammering him for.
