George Lucas won't be involved, so it could be good.

Hank, you an Emma Stone guy? If you are, I am there with you. BTW, excellent casting, she'd be perfect especially with her eyes.

Yeah she is pretty good.

I'd like to add Ian McKellan (sp?) to play C'Baoth. HE wouldnt even need to change out of his gandalf costume...

They need a big time director, and the acquisition pays for itself by the end of episode IX.

I don't know how to feel about this yet. I'm guessing it's going to be a corny CG kidz fest, but if they can tell a great story and make it work, I'll keep an open mind.

Really, they can't do worse than the prequels. They're basically unwatchable, IMHO, so really anything they make can't be worse then those. The question is more about method. Do they want this to be a similar money-bag where the product is shit but they profit regardless, or will they make it a labor of love and open up a whole new world of awesome adventure?

If they do go with the Thrawn Trilogy, I would be very, very pleased, but I think the themes may be too serious for them if they're wanting to make a kids movie. If they have the chutzpah to restore Star Wars to it's sci-fi/action-adventure roots, they can adapt the Thrawn Trilogy, infuse non-insufferable elements that kids can grasp, and make a tremendous follow up to restore faith in fans. So many variables that it's impossible to speculate, unfortunately.

There is no way they could kill the extended universe worse than Lucas killed the original characters in the prequels.

PLease dont bump this thread in 2015 after we see a musical number with Pellaeon and Thrawn, singing a tune about Elomin sculptures.

The extended universe novels werent written for teens, the newer ones might be but I havent read a new one lately.

I watched the first couple of episodes of BB when it first started and was underwhelmed. Apparently it got better, but I'm cool with my decision.

I bewildered by a grown man that roots for two teams in the same division but it is what is.

Key is Lucas's statement that "it's now time for me to pass STAR WARS on to a new generation of filmmakers." Expect new STAR WARS films - shot in 3D - every two to three years from 2015 forward.

According to the conference call, there is an "extensive and detailed treatment" for the next trilogy.

They've already got it ready to go.

They also own Indiana Jones. I predict 2014.

Disney made Pirates of the Carribean and Avengers. I'm sure they'll do fine as long as they keep Lucas miles away from VII

George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy Talk the Future of STAR WARS; Reveal They’ve Already Met with Writers for EPISODE VII

by Adam Chitwood Posted: October 30th, 2012 at 3:36 pm

A tiny bit of news broke this afternoon, as it was announced that Disney was acquiring George Lucas‘ LucasFilm and a new Star Wars film is being planned for release in 2015. Naturally, the internet went a little nuts. There was a bit of confusion surrounding the initial news nugget, but we learned a bit more as Disney and LucasFilm started revealing the details of the deal. Star Wars: Episode 7 will kick off a new trilogy, with LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy overseeing the franchise as the executive producer while Lucas acts as a creative consultant.

In concert with the acquisition news, Lucas and Kennedy released a video online explaining why the decision was made to sell the company to Disney and what this means for Star Wars going forward. Hit the jump to see what they had to say.

Lucas begins by explaining why he decided to step away from the company and why Disney is the perfect fit for Lucasfilm:

“Obviously I’ve been talking about retiring for several years now. I wanted to get into sort of another stage of life where I’m not in the film business anymore, where I don’t have to run a corporation. It occurred to me one day that the perfect person to run the company was Kathy [Kennedy]. It’s just such a perfect fit, and I felt that I really wanted to put the company somewhere in a larger entity that would protect it. Disney is a huge corporation; they have all kinds of capabilities and faciliites. There’s a lot of strength to be gained by this.”

In this afternoon’s press release, it was revealed that a treatment for Episode 7 has already been written and an outline is already done for Episodes 8 and 9. Lucas reveals in the video that he’s written the treatments for the new trilogy, and he handed over all the Star Wars story nuggets that he’s accumulated over the years to Kennedy:

“I always said I wasn’t going to do anymore, and that’s true, I’m not going to do anymore. But that doesn’t mean I’m unwilling to turn it over to Kathy [Kennedy] to do more. I have story treatments of 7, 8, and 9, and a bunch of other movies and obviously we have hundreds of books and comics and everything you could possibly imagine. So I sort of moved that treasure trove of stories and various things to Kathy, and I have complete confidence that she’s gonna take them and make great movies.”

Kennedy revealed that they’ve already started talking to writers about penning the screenplay for Episode 7:

“We are absolutely going to make Star Wars movies and we’re in the midst of the really fun part of the process which is we’re sitting down with a couple of writers and we’re starting to discuss ideas and we’re starting to talk about what those stories might be.”

Though I’m sure they’d be abruptly abducted and never heard from again if they opened their mouth, I’m incredibly interested to hear what screenwriters Kennedy has been talking to about handling the script for the next Star Wars film. Hopefully we hear more soon, though I’m sure we won’t be lacking for Star Wars rumors in the coming weeks.

I always wonder why people don't treat these movies properly. The dialogue is horrible and the acting is really really bad. I understand they were ahead of their time, and the special effects were brand new. But they don't really advance the movie, and did I mention the dialogue is bad?

And that's just the originals. Then they get the chance to right the ship on the 3 prequels, they shit the bed. 3 bad movies. 3 movies so bad, people think they are worse than the originals (that makes them really really bad).

I just don't get how these movies are still so appealing. They suck. They aren't good movies.

You thought Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were bad?

What?

Jedi and Phantom Menace were the only bad movies.

Definitely not great. Only a 67 and 80 on RT. Average, but not epic or deserving of the praise the franchise gets. Just regular movies.

Better than Jedi and Star Wars too...

If RT doesn't mean retweet, I have no idea what that acronym stands for.

 Rotten Tomatoes

Even though I think they are all bad, I can see how people may think they are ok. I just don't see how people can worship them the way they do. They just aren't that special, especially if you take out the earth shattering special effects... Which today, are comical.

I think it is the fact that the originals were released when most of us were kids and they were amazing to our little brains.

I started to write a decent post and got sick of doing it in the 3rd paragraph.

Upon further review, I'm still against it. Wanna learn more after Episode VI? Read a book, read the wookiepedia, read my lips: No. New. Movies.

I get that. I liked Ninja Turtles. But now, I don't think Ninja Turtles is the greatest franchise ever. When I watch them now with my kid, I laugh. I get why I liked them as a kid, but now I can see them for what they really are... Good kid's movies.

A series that also got worse upon each new release.

At least it started out strong, unlike the SW prequels.

oh thank god, i don't think i could handle 7 more...

there doesn't need to be more star wars movies but if they could at least write a half decent script that has an actual narrative arc and some fucking interesting action unlike the prequels, i'd be OK with it.

One can argue that the soundtracks, taken in their entirety, are the best scores in the history of film.

The other thing to keep in mind is that both trilogies were aimed at 10-13 yr olds. Many of us who experienced the original trilogy as kids/teens hoped that the later films would match our adult tastes, but that wasn’t Lucas’s intent.
