Back in Chicago, just wants to play for the Cubs this year. Thanks but no thanks to other offers. This is his side of the story.

Not sure how the Theocracy feels about this? Got to think some bad blood was left behind

I would bring him back for the same blank contract deal that Andre Dawson once gave the Cubs. Sure you can play out the rest of your days here at the league minimum. And for the love of god keep that Canadian sonofabitch away from Brenlys job.

Hopefully that is a roofie that drugs him so we can smuggle him back to Manitoba

There is now way he accepts a below market 1 year deal for say 5M with zero no trade protections.

Honestly where the Cubs are at in their contention the last thing they need is a 36 year old starter. If he wants to play in Chicago so bad why doesn't he give Kenny Williams a call.

Well, actually he's from British Columbia, but if you want to drop him off in the 'Peg, I guess you could. Just not the North End, because he'll get shivved by some Indians drunk on antifreeze.

I know some people agreed with me on this back in the summer, maybe you weren't one of them....

Veterans can, and do, help young ballplayers develop. I truly believe that you need some solid veterans on your team (all sports) in order to get the best out of the young players...the young players can learn 'x' and 'y' from the coaching staff, but there is the intangible 'z' that comes from guys like Dempster...and yes, even Soriano.

Signing Dempster would get you some wins...and it isn't like there are a ton of young, promising free agent arms or guys ready for a shot at the bigs in the Cubs' organization. No long-term deals...but again, $7M a year would be a value for a low to mid 3.00 ERA pitcher who may also offer a value beyond on the field stats.

I think that veteran presence on the pitching staff is overrated because with the exception of Smardzija none of the young pitchers he is supposed to be mentoring are even in town yet. Additionally I think he is a pud.

Sign him and trade him again at the deadline, right?

Cause that was so easy last time. At least the trade reset his 5 and 10 rights. I would only sign him if he agreed to clause in the contract that said he has absolutely no say in where he gets traded. Then I would trade him to Kansas City.

Well yeah that's the thing, it would be easy this time. Just don't put a no trade clause in the contract. Sounds like he wants the Cubs way more than they should want him. Just tell him to fuck off if he doesn't want to agree to your terms on the contract.

Bingo. He's got zero leverage. They'll lose 90 plus with or without him.

It will be interesting to see if Demp makes his desire to play for the Cubs again public

Nope. Like someone else said, two years and $15 million with a club option for a third. I don't think he would agree not to have a NTC because it is pretty obvious the Cubs would want to trade him at the deadline and he gave a discount only so he could play here. Maybe you make the third year option become automatic if he gets traded or his salary increases.

Pass. This is the attitude that the Theocracy wants to get rid of. Demp wants to come back because it's a nice environment for him. He's still beloved by the masses from Iowa and Peoria. He loves the city and the ballpark. And it's always possible there is still some family stuff going on.

It's not about wins and losses with this clown. I'm sure Theo is kicking the tires to see how cheaply he could sign Demp. I just think it sends the wrong message. Plus, as FavreFan pointed out, they'll be in the same situation this July as they were the last. Do we really want to go through that drama again?

Yup. There will also be no pressure to win in 2013, and possibly even 2014. He can go out there and have an ERA of 5 with a 2-6 record and still collect his paychecks.

Cubs should pass.

I'd ask him if he's going to bring Randall Delgado with him. If not, thanks but no thanks.

Yeah, for a last place team to start.

When it came time to move to Atlanta-- a team in the thick of a pennant race-- he veoted the trade. Yes, he went to Texas but at the time they were in a MUCH better position in the playoff race than the Braves were.

Maybe you need to go back and look at his start in the 2008 NLDS to fully realize how much he enjoys the pressure of a playoff run.

He did have pressure. He was in a contract year.

Dumpster is notoriously good in contract years about getting in shape and then there is a fall off once he gets his paper.
