That was the scariest few hours of weather I ever experienced. It was worse than any tornado spawning storm I've been in. Obviously, we lost power fairly quickly. The wind was so fast that we could see our sliding glass door moving in and out. We were incredibly lucky that we had no damage outside of losing a ton of trees in our complex. They still haven't cleared all of them. Between hurricane Irene, it probably killed about 20 willow trees and probably a few hundred total trees. We had our standard shingles and siding all over the ground. Given what other people are dealing with, we are incredibly lucky.

The lines for gasoline have been insane, and now it's mostly gone and gas stations are dark. The day after the storm, there was a line 30 people deep outside of Dunkin Donuts. That really shows the tragedy of it all. No one should have to wait 30 minutes for a donut.

People have no idea what to do when stoplights are out. It's basically just a system where whoever is going faster is the one who keeps going. No stop. Things like this can really bring out the worst in people. I had someone drive around me when I stopped at an actual stop sign and almost hit someone else.

I only had to deal with two really cold nights. We lost much of our freezer, but luckily it wasn't fully stocked before the storm.

To give a little advice, make sure you have a portable battery operated radio, preferably with an option to crank it to charge it. Have a cooler large enough to throw in some of your frozen stuff.

Glad to hear you got out relatively unscathed, BRick.

Nobody in Chicago knows what to do when stoplights are out either.

Glad you are alright. That is good advice for people everywhere. Also saw someone yesterday recommending to have some type of notebook where you have contact information since we are so dependent upon the internet to look everything up now.

Also, what was great for us, was we have one of those car jumper units that can be charged and has a usb connection on it. I was able to plug in my usb cord for our phones and keep it charged. This is much more convenient then charging it in your car.

Glad to hear you made it through. Definitely looked rough on TV, hard to imagine living through it.

Glad to hear this was relatively pain free for you and yours.

I highlighted this as it reminded me of my old man. It seemed that he was always a little paranoid about some things. Gas, water, canned foods and lights were his favorites. We never had to face anything like what you just experienced. But anytime a big storm was coming, he would head to the gas station and fill it up. It makes sense now although at the time it didn't. Self has duly noted the old man was a wise man.

I've never experienced something like it either. We did fill up both cars(that's right, we have two cars 99%ers) and are glad we did. Someone from my wife's work was unable to get in because they didn't have enough gas after they had to drive a long distance.

The other issue is that since it's only major roads that are clear, everyone is taking the same roads, so traffic is terrible, which uses more gas.

We are good! Power is back on and house was OK. In CT, the coast got it bad. I am helping to manage an insurance Catastrophe operation for my company over the next few weeks and will be surveying the area. I will upload any good pics if I can.
Glad to hear everyone else from the board was OK.

I'm glad you're okay.

I want to punch you in the nuts. I really don't, but I just wanted to say that.

But I kinda do want to punch you in the nuts, actually.

Do you live in Connecticut?

What cities on the Sound will you be visiting?

Yes, we live in CT. Not sure what cities I will be visiting yet. We will have a better idea once cleanup is underway and damages can be assessed.

So, I literally can't drive anywhere today to save gas. We filled up both of our cars before the storm started, but we have to start saving it to make sure my wife can get to work for the week. This kind of sucks. At least there wasn't a NYC marathon. Other people we know have waited in lines for 3 or 4 hours.

One interesting thing I learned is that only the police can open up a closed gas station. Obviously, this is designed to stop people from shooting each other, but they have to be there and then they keep the peace for the whole process. They've also started to limit people to 10 gallons at a time, and they can tell cars that they don't have enough gas. Lines here can go for miles.

I have friends who have tried to get gas 3 or 4 times in NYC. And a nor'easter is coming later this week!

I only had to wait in line for about 40 minutes for gas today! Thanks Obama! I guess living in a blue state has perks.

NEW YORKERS TRADING GAS FOR SEX

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - How far would go to get gas?

Long gas stationlines and empty gas pumps have plagued drivers across New York and New Jersey since Superstorm Sandy slammed into the East Coast last Monday, leaving a gas shortage across the region.

Stories of price gouging and fights at gas stations have also been commonplace. But now it seems people — men in particular — are finding new ways to take advantage of gas-seeking Tri-State residents: Sex.

Men have been taking to the personals on Craigslist, trading gasoline for sex. Some of the ads on NewYork.Craigslist.org read as follows:

What Would you do for gas?? m4w – 30 Let’s help each other …………………?

gas4sex- m4w 35 – 6 foor 1 225 Italian workout good looking looking to hang out I have 5 gallons of gas

I need to vent and I guess this is as good a place as any.

I am sick of this SUPERSTORM SANDY phrase.

It was a big hurricane that has been a real pain in the ass for a lot of people. If we have to give it a name, don't create a longer catch phrase name for the sake of marketing.

I anxiously await the coming of Hurricane CeeLO or Typhoon Ja'Various (before sniper attack on the Weather Service).

They downgraded it from a Hurricane before it hit land so insurance companies cannot apply hurricane deductibles.

Is there a deductible for SUPERSTORMS

I'll have to look into that.

Thanks.

I sold my car before coming here. Live in Manhattan, where the number of gas stations can be counted on one hand (and you have ~2 fingers left over)

But -- for a while, we had no subways in Lower Manhattan. And the taxis were fighting for gas. It's gotten better, at least, in the city. Although, a buddy of mine lost his phone and won't get it back until Thanksgiving. That astounds me.
