They better have the gladiator stuff. That was some good, messed-up action.

Also, I think them showing a pic of the family is setting up the daughter stuff.

enjoyed the surprise, but overall not happy (or at least concerned) with the way they killed off Lori. At this rate they're gonna run out of important people for the governor to kill. But, do like that they had Carl deliver the death blow. If that don't fuck him up I don't know what will.

Glad to see T-dog go cause that opens the door for the Tyrese to come strolling in!

...Speaking about the shocking episode where [SPOILER ALERT!] Lori was killed off in a gruesome yet emotional way, Glen Mazzara claimed they made the decision to move up Lori's death "to make sure that Rick was suffering as much as possible, that Rick was at his breaking point, at the exact moment that his most formidable foe [the Governor] was coming right for him."

The showrunner went on explaining, "The Rick at the end of episode two can take on the Governor but the Rick of end of episode four is a broken man. Now everything is up in the air and anything could happen when the two groups meet. That was the catalyst for the decision: Lori's death and the affects on Rick and the rest of the group would be a devastating loss."

The comic book writer Robert Kirkman added, "It's very important in the comic series that Rick loses his wife after everything he's tried to do; it's unavoidable and that informs his character moving forward... We wanted to spend a lot of time with Carl and Rick in the aftermath of that. As the season progresses, you'll see just how important Lori was to the show and how much of a loss that's going to end up being."

Mazzara additionally said that Lori's death would always haunt Rick, gushing, "The takeaway is that Rick is always going to feel that he had a hand in Lori's death." As for whether or not Lori would return to the show, he didn't rule out the possibility as stating, "Nobody goes away on this show; we can always have flashbacks."

Asked whether Woodbury’s gladiatorial arena–which pits live people accused of breaking the community’s laws against zombies for the entertainment of the masses–would appear in the series, Mazzara took time away from being evasive and answered the question head-on.

“That’s something that I think people can look forward to this season,” the producer told THR. “I’d hope people would think it’s an exciting scene. I won’t give away who could be in there but it could be anybody.”

Anyone wanna drop some knowledge in comparing Lori's death on the TV show to the comics? I read on the Warming Glow that the comics was much more gruesome.

She had the baby. During the final stages of the prison assault led by The Governor, Lori suffers a fatal shotgun blast to the back while she is carrying Judith. When Lori falls, Judith is crushed to death beneath her weight.

Are you sure about that? I always thought that the baby died from the same shotgun blast that took out Lori. Any way to post a screen shot of the comic panel?

From that picture I can see why I always assumed she died from the shotgun blast.

Some great stuff that episode. Very surprised to see the "magic" phone show up, wasn't sure if they would include that in the tv show. Glad to see the gladiator stuff show up, can't wait to see Michonne get in there and whupp some ass!

Where the fuck is Carol? Why are there two graves filled in? Why did Darryl stick a flower on that one grave? Are we go believe that Carol is dead?????

I think that's supposed to be the implication.

Very good episode.

What's the deal with the phone?

And why was Merle one of the gladiators? I thought it was a punishment thing.

Rick's gone a little off the reservation. Its Lori on the phone. In the comics he would "talk" to her from time to time on the phone. I think he eventually got rid of it cause it was weirding Carl out. He also eventually admitted that he knows she's not really on the phone, but it helps him out to "talk" to her about what's going on.

The gladiator thing is for entertainment....for now. In the comics the governor makes Michonne fight one of his men and she kills the shit out of him....and all the walkers if my memory serves me right.

So what was up with the markings in the notebook? Was going to ask about the phone, but that's been answered. Where was Lori's body? Am I to assume that walker ate her?

Yeah they mentioned after the show that the walker ate her. Not sure what the notebook was about.

Walking Dead’ exec producer Robert Kirkman talks about tonight’s bloody episode: ‘It’s a dark show!’
By Clark Collis

Can an episode still be described as a “pausing-for-breath” show if it introduces the dead, but still very excitable, daughter of one main character and finds another trying to retrieve the remains of his recently deceased wife from the stomach of a zombie? That was the question raised by tonight’s episode of AMC’s undead saga The Walking Dead which, even if it didn’t feature the cast-thinning mayhem of last week’s show, was hardly lacking in incident.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So, Rick seems to be taking the loss of Lori pretty well.
ROBERT KIRKMAN: [Laughs] Yeah, exactly. It’s funny, we did a Talking Dead poll and there were a lot of options as to how Rick would handle this. And one of the options that Talking Dead came up with — and I think they do this independent of knowing what’s coming up in the show — but one of the options was “Go on a zombie-killing rampage.” And that option won by 80% of the vote.

EW: I want to make sure I understand matters correctly: Lori’s body was eaten by a zombie, who Rick then shot and started to gut in the hope of retrieving his dead wife’s remains. Is that right?
RK: I don’t know if it was necessarily that — whether he wanted to inflict further pain on the zombie that ate his wife or if he as, in fact, for some crazy reason trying to see some piece of her in the hopes of gaining something…Look, it’s a dark show, I don’t know what to tell you!

EW: I know you like to say that ideas are generated by the writers’ room as a whole rather than giving credit to specific people. But I want to know who specifically thought up that scenario because I plan on forwarding their details to the police.
RK: [Laughs] I think I’m going to lay the blame on Angela Kang, who wrote the episode.

EW: By the end of the episode three graves had been dug and filled in at the prison. But there are no actual bodies in any of them, right? Lori and T-Dog were both eaten and they haven’t found any trace of Carol at all.
RK: That’s correct. They’re markers — it’s a sentimental thing. There’s enough bodies in the world of the Walking Dead. You don’t have to actually put them in the ground.

EW: I understand. It just occurs to me that this means they got the two prisoners to dig two big holes and then just fill them in again.
RK: Are you finding plot holes now?

EW: No. Are you punning?
RK: Yes, I am.

EW: That just seems to be some post-apocalyptic, Cool Hand Luke-style hazing to me.
RK: I honestly think it was just a test to see what they could do. It was more of an initiation than a hazing, if there’s any kind of a difference. I think they had every intention of finding bodies and they just didn’t.

EW: You hinted last week that we would be learning more about the Governor’s daughter and we certainly did. The character is in the original comic book — could you talk a little about how you came up with her?
RK: The Governor is a pretty bad dude and does some horrible things. And I thought it would be necessary to show a significant piece of humanity in the guy. You never just want to have a moustache-twirling bad guy. To show some hint at his humanity and to give some kind of pain to the character, to show what he’s been through and how he arrived at the person that he currently is — I think Penny accomplishes that. I mean, the fact that he still has his daughter and he still clings to the hope that there is something in her, it shows that there is something really interesting going on with the guy. But it also informs his relationship with Milton as we’ll see in the next few episodes. It just kind of gives him another layer to his mission. Not only is he trying to keep this city safe, he’s trying to figure something out with his daughter.

EW: The Governor did come across somewhat sympathetically this episode, particularly when Andrea makes clear her distaste for the zombie-gladiator fight. It was like a date which went horribly wrong.
RK: The performance from David Morrissey in that scene is probably one of my favorite of the entire season — he is just so into it and she’s not. He’s like, “Whoah! Whaoah! What’s going on? What happened?” I love the switch there. But, yeah, it is fun watching the Governor actually kind of enjoying himself to a certain extent and opening up to Andrea in his own way. It’s an interesting thing about the town of Woodbury, that it is seemingly so peaceful but they have this very bizarre way of blowing off steam and keeping people entertained so they don’t occupy their minds with other things. Like how crazy their leader might be or that there may be something else going on here.

EW: Does Penny still have her teeth?
RK: Yes, Penny does indeed still have her teeth. Are you referencing the most regrettable scene in the comic book ever?

EW: I am. [Note: In the Walking Dead comic, the Governor ultimately removes his charge's teeth with a pair of pliers.] Although it was made clear this episode that Merle and crew have gotten into the habit of de-fanging the zombies.
RK: Yeah. The Governor wouldn’t necessarily want to do that to his own daughter. [The scene in the comic] makes me cringe the most. It makes me proud and disgusted at the same time, that I wrote it. Whether or not we go there remains to be seen.

EW: I love that the Governor had written “Finalize budget for second half of the year” in his Big Book of Plans before going off his rocker.
RK: Yeah, the Governor has a lot of big plans and I would encourage viewers to try and find hints at upcoming things in his notebook.

EW: This could just be my poor hearing, but when Merle and Milton were out in the country capturing the zombies did one of the undead get called a “constipated Elmo”?
RK: I would have to look at the script. All I can say it response to that is, “I sure hope so.”

EW: Daryl was looking very Man With No Name-ish in his poncho.
RK: Yeah, Eulyn (Womble), our wardrobe lady really does take great pride in making Daryl look as awesome as possible as often as possible.

EW: As someone who has read the comic book, I have an idea of who’s calling Rick on the phone. But is it possible it could be his mother saying, “You never call! You never write! How’s Lori?”
RK: It could be anybody, you never know. It could be Shane or T-Dog calling from heaven. There are clearly hints as to what that is if you’ve read the comic book series — whether or not we go in that direction remains to be seen. But there’s definitely some interesting stuff coming up.

I think that is about where I stopped...maybe got a little farther than that. Or maybe not as far.

Rick had just gotten his hand chopped off...somewhat recently. The prison wasn't overrun yet though, I don't think.

He still has his hand, though I thought he was going to lose it after beating that prisoner's face in. Last one I read was when Rick, Michonne, and Dale (I think?) find Woodbury.

Stay the course. The Washington community/hilltop/Saviors stuff is better than anything in the first 80 issues.

Just finished the Telltale Labs Walking Dead video game. It's pretty awesome.

If you're into the whole WD world, I think you'd enjoy it. It's interactive so the decisions you make change the game and they give you some real Zombie Apocalypse-type decisions that I won't spoil. I highly recommend it.

Disagree.

The Prison/Woodbury arc was the highlight of the series.

The Negan stuff just feels like a rehashing of the Woodbury story, just not as interesting. Seems like they could explore a completely different type of situation.

Exactly.

Maybe Carl will turn heel and join Negan, which could make things interesting.

I'd like to see them move in a direction where the goal is to go on the offensive vs the zombies. We could see them taking the roll of recruiter and going out to try and find other survivors to team up with with the goal being forming an army and trying to take back some serious land.

It would be completely different at least.

I guess Kirkman is slowly moving that direction as it is. Forming up these big interconnected communities is the first step to putting together an army.

I have been slowing getting through the comics. I just read issue 34 I think when they finally get back to
the prison after escaping Woodbury. Looking forward to seeing where the story goes from there during my
lunch break today. Been interesting to see the differences between the comics and the tv show.
